DOUGLAS E. WINTER: Offering Revelation April 2000
By Paula Guran
When seeking words of wisdom, some people quote the Bible, others quote Shakespeare; some find enlightenment in the words of ancient texts and some in modern lyrics. Me? When it comes to horror, I quote Douglas E. Winter. My outlook on modern horror is certainly influenced by a number of sources, but St. Doug is the most pervading one. His FACES OF FEAR a World Fantasy Award-winning and Hugo-nominated collection of interviews with the creators of horror modern horror published in 1985 is always within hand's reach. I have two copies of his 1982 fiction anthology PRIME EVIL. (What if I lose a copy?) Ladies and gentlemen, this is the man who said, in PRIME EVIL, "Horror is not a genre, like the mystery or science fiction or the western. It is not a kind of fiction, meant to be confined to the ghetto of a special shelf in libraries or bookstore. . . Horror is an emotion." Horror, he also reminded us in his afterword to his 1997 International Horror Guild award-winning anthology REVELATIONS, is "that which cannot be made safe evolving, ever-changing because it is about our relentless need to confront the unknown, the unknowable, and the emotion we experience when in its thrall." Winter's nonfiction includes the definitive biography/critique STEPHEN KING: THE ART OF DARKNESS (1984) and the forthcoming CLIVE BARKER: THE DARK FANTASTIC. A member of the National Book Critics, his reviews and articles have appeared in mainstream publications such as THE WASHINGTON POST and HARPER'S BAZAAR and he received a special World Fantasy Award in 1986 for his criticism. His award-wining short fiction has appeared in numerous anthologies over the years. An honor graduate of Harvard Law School, Winter's "day job" is as a trial and appellate lawyer in the Washington, D.C., office of Bryan Cave LLP.

by Douglas E. Winter
Knopf/ $24/ 280 pp.
ISBN 0-375-40838-X Review by Hank Wagner Although Burdon Lane's job is somewhat out of the mainstreamhe's a gun runner, trafficking in illegal firearmshis anxieties mirror those of many of his middle aged contemporaries: even when things seem to be going well, he harbors fears of being derailed, of having the life he's so carefully built slip through his fingers. Thus, he initially questions his business partners when they ask him to join them on a supposed "milk run?" to New York City. Despite his misgivings (the operation, involving two volatile street gangs, doesn't seem to require his presence), Lane agrees to participate, assured by his companions that nothing will go wrong. But things do go wrong, and in spectacular fashion. As it turns out, the operation is a cover for the assassination of prominent civil rights leader Gideon Parks, gunned down during a political rally. Realizing that he is among those who have been left to take the fall for the crime, Lane runs for his life, vowing to get to the truth and punish those responsible. The remainder of the novel details his struggles to stay alive against formidable odds, as he uncovers the hidden subtext of his world, a place where nothing is as it seems, and alliances are broken and forged with alarming speed. Winter's first novel is a bleak, yet strangely optimistic thriller, an accomplished performance that delves deep into the heart and mind of its main protagonist, a criminal whose brutal mores and ambitions mask his all too human vulnerabilities. Lane's first person narrative, blunt and terse, convincingly conveys the surprising depth and variety of his emotions: his matter-of-fact attitude toward his strange career, his love for his deceased mother, the passion he feels for his girlfriend, and the anger he feels at the duplicity he endures. It also creates a sense of immediacy, one that becomes more noticeable as the book hurtles towards its bloody but inevitable conclusion.

Go To: Authors Gunplay Article More Doug... Run Published by Canongate Crime GUNS, DEATH AND... BARRISTERS? DOUG WINTER CHATS TO US ABOUT CRIME, CRIMINALITY AND THE SLOW DEATH OF AMERICAN CULTURE. Slate : Did you hear about the shooting in the Chicago park? And now we have this new guy nicknamed "Mucko" blowing away his accounts department for tax arrears. Isn't this the sort of thing that makes you think, Christ, here we go again? Winter : Actually, it never stops. We don't go again . . . we just go on and on. But it's so typical, and hypocritical, for Americans to view gun crimes as individual incidents - when, in fact, they're symptoms of a disease. That's what Run is all about: an entertainment that tries to pierce the mythology of simplistic solutions - the lone nut, the disgruntled employee, the savage criminal -and look at the dark truths of gun culture. These aren't isolated events. Imagine what would happen if another product caused this kind of mayhem. This year we've seen the Firestone tire debacle: a torrent of publicity, congressional hearings, product recalls, lawsuits. Problem identified; problem solved. Apparently some 150 Americans died in Firestone tire incidents over a period of years. That's the number of people who will die from gunshot wounds this year in Washington, D.C., alone.

Slate : Did the Barker profile intrigue you as much as your fiction - I should imagine he has a lot to say outside of his books? Winter The Dark Fantastic Slate : Did you perceive that whole re-invention process taking place when you researched him? It seems he jumps into his worlds and doesn't care about leaving the reader in the dust. Winter Slate Coldheart Canyon is an ambitious and brilliant novel - it seems his father's death halted and then propelled him into something entirely different. Was he forthcoming or diffident about this work while you were researching? Winter Slate : He seems American now - when he and his boyfriend turned up for a signing at Borders over a year ago he was tanned, charming, stayed three hours, drew on people's chests and broke female fans' hearts. His voice was captivating - Liverpool meets Napa Valley, extraordinary. Do you find him magnetic?

Douglas E. Winter: Ratchetting Up the Prose
Interviewed by Mark Campbell Douglas Winter was born in 1950 and grew up in the steel town of Granite City, Illinois. His mother encouraged him to read and write, even if it meant buying him subscriptions to Famous Monsters of Filmland. He attended Harvard Law School, from where he graduated in 1975. His first job was with Judge William H. Webster, later director of the FBI and CIA. By the 1980s, Winter was a partner in one of the nation's leading law firms, where he specialised in air disaster cases. His criticism, reviews and interviews have appeared in countless US magazines and newspapers. Among his published books are the definitive biography of Stephen King, The Art of Darkness, and the anthologies Prime Evil and Revelations. His short stories have been published with increasing regularity and have won several awards. Winter lives in Oakton, Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC, with his wife, Lynne, and their three dogs. Although he's now retired as a partner of the law firm, he continues to work on a limited basis. On his days off he can be found at home hunched over a computer, writing to the accompaniment of eclectic rock music and his ever-growing collection of obscure film soundtracks.

. . . Winter 2003 The Saga of Douglas Sirk Michael Stern grew up in the north Chicago suburbs. He fell in love with food and movies at Michigan. ("I lived above a no-doubt-long-gone diner called Red's Rite Spot. I think the vapors from Red's hash browns insinuated themselves into my brain and directed me down my career path.") Among the buff-est of campus film aficiandos during those cinema-centric days of the '60s, Stern became fascinated with the work of Douglas Sirk, master of the ultra-soap opera. Later, at Yale, Stern wrote his doctoral thesis, Douglas Sirk Sirk Sirk's Imitation of Life was "so popular," Stern said, as he ate as little possible of the road food he was sampling (see accompanying article), "that his studio finally acceded to his persistent request that he be allowed to make any kind of picture he wanted. Now was his chance to depart from highly wrought melodramas drenched in Freudian themes and symbolism." Facing such freedom, Sirk went hysterical and returned to Germany, where he'd lived before World War II with his Jewish wife before they escaped to save her from the Nazis. Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson in a pose typical of films Sirk directed.
