  • Interviews with Welwyn on Her Books
'I have a confession to make: if I have my druthers, I pick a good children's book over an adult book every time. So when asked by the editor to interview a local children's author, I knew immediately that I wanted to chat with Welwyn Wilton Katz. Having read seven of her books, my excitement peaked on the interview day - just ask my fellow bookmates!
  • FALSE FACE, Welwyn Wilton Katz
An exciting and well-told story of a white female teen (Lonny) and a mixed-blood male teen (Tom) who accidentally unearth an old Iroquois false face mask. However, the portrayal of the Iroquois and nonsense presented about the mask are way off base and very insulting. The author is obviously familiar with the locale of the story, and places on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario are accurately described.
  • Welwyn Wilton Katz
Welwyn Wilton Katz was born in London, Ontario where she still lives, but is adaptable even to California living. She is a former math teacher and now writes novels for teenagers as well as short stories and plays for adults.

    Visual Echoes
Some pictures are fun just to look at, even before you know anything about them. Elizabeth Winthrop Chanler , by Sargent, is full of visual echoes and effects that reward close looking. Everything above the "horizon line" of the sofa back is symmetrical and calm, in a shallow space. The perfect oval of Miss Chanler's head is exactly centered, and it's balanced by the stable verticals and horizontals of two framed objects. Her eyes, flanking the perpendicular of her nose and mouth, meet ours in a fixed stare. Who will blink first?

    About Elizabeth Chanler
Elizabeth Chanler was born in 1866 to distinguished parents: her father was a Democratic congressman from New York, her mother was a descendant of John Jacob Astor. But when her mother died prematurely, "Bessie" was left to help care for seven younger brothers and sisters. The portrait here suggests the contest of discipline and emotion that she must often have experienced. Sargent painted her portrait in his London studio when Elizabeth Chanler was there for her brother's wedding. She was 26, an age when most women were tending children of their own. Sargent included a couple of paintings from his collection in the picture. These have been identified as a Madonna and child on the right, and a copy of an old woman from a Frans Hals painting on the left. Did the artist intentionally fix Elizabeth halfway between motherhood and old age?

    A Commissioned Portrait
The portrait was commissioned in 1893 by Elizabeth's younger sister Margaret. Margaret kept it in her home until her death in 1963. Elizabeth did marry just five years after her portrait was painted, and the painting ultimately passed to her son, Chanler Chapman, who generously donated it to the National Museum of American Art in 1980.

    Background
The author biography, discussion questions, and interview that follow are provided here to enhance your group's reading of Elizabeth Winthrop's Island Justice . We hope that they will give you new ways of thinking about and discussing a novel that has been widely praised for its evocation of place, richly drawn characters, and suspenseful storytelling. Topics for Discussion
  • In Island Justice, the author seems to be presenting us with two women in different stages in their lives. Compare the characters and the life circumstances of Anna Craven and Maggie Hammond. In what ways are they different and in what ways do they resemble each other?
  • What is the meaning of the title?
  • The story is related from the point of view of an omniscient narrator. How does this affect your concept of the characters and your understanding of their daily lives? If the author had chosen to tell this story from one person's point of view, how would that decision have changed the story?
  • Some people have called Sam Matera, the naturalist, the hero of this book. Do you agree? How does the author relate the natural ecosystem of a New England island to the problems of the human community? What is the meaning of the last sentence of the book?
