    TRENT UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES
    VERTICAL RESEARCH FILES
Collected and donated by Professor John Wadland
These files contain newspaper and magazine articles, as well as photocopies of articles from books and periodicals. The materials were collected between the early 1970's and early 1990's. The subjects of the files vary greatly and deal with various topics such as media, publishing and related issues, northern studies, native studies, land settlement and land use, arts, etc. Perhaps the most useful part of the files will be the name files. The files will be useful as a starting place for research on specific topics. They reflect the years they were collected and are by no means exhaustive, but offer another tool for researchers to use. Other vertical files maintained in the Archives reading room include papers and reports prepared by students in the Haliburton-centered bioregionalism course and unpublished research papers of a more general nature by faculty and students and shelved in the reading room. Also preserved are three boxes of vertical files relating to National and Provincial Parks created by Professors Douglas Pimlott and Paul Aird. There is also an extensive collection of books which relate to the organised

Appropriately, pearls of wisdom from Benjamin Franklin and Henry David Thoreau are quoted throughout this book, a first-person account of the successes and failures of Marriot founder J. Willard Marriot and his son and successor J. W. Marriot, Jr. With chapter titles like “Preserve order amid change,” “Give to your employees—and they’ll give back to you,” “Success is a team sport” and “Listen to your heart—and don’t look back,” The Spirit to Serve speaks especially to business managers, who might incorporate Marriot’s philosophies into their own businesses. A Life in School: What the Teacher Learned Jane Tompkins ’61, Addison-Wesley, 1996. In this memoir Tomp-kins looks back on her life as a teacher, paying tribute to our educational system but also critiquing it. Her education made her a high achiever who could read five languages but had little knowledge of herself. She eventually discards the conventions of classroom teaching, abandoning the syllabus for a “no-frills” approach. A Life in School calls for a “more holistic way of conceiving education”—methods that draw on nonintellectual modes of knowing, that do not deny students and teachers their emotions and spirit. She discusses Bryn Mawr at length—her favorite professors and her impressions of campus life in general.

    Emily Dickinson WRITERS' FRIENDSHIPS
Edited and compiled by Robert Sward
    Perhaps
by Linda Rogers I have been thinking a lot about death lately, because so many of the generation of writers before mine have been getting up from the table and people are no longer calling me and my friends "young writers." What does it mean, living and dying, all of which is witnessing and writing for us? I have noticed that many of my country's finest fiction writers are women, an alarming number of them picked off by cancer before they have written their definitive book of old age. We have lost Adele Wiseman, Margaret Laurence, and Marion Engel before they got a chance to be grandmothers. Laurence's son has just had a daughter, whom he and his wife named Adele. How Wiseman and Laurence, literary friends from childhood, would have loved that. Carol says she is in her final chapter. The curiosity that has made her one of the finest fiction writers of the twentieth century sustains her now. She watches the people around her. How are they reacting? How will they react? How is she reacting? Every bad and good thing that happens in our lives, whether it is illness, an accident, a love affair, a windfall of some kind, has been treated the same way. We file our joy and our pain in the memory bank that pays interest when we withdraw them from memory and rearrange them in poems and stories that are always true in their details, even when the sum is fiction. If a piano fell on me while I was walking down the street, I'd be carried away on a stretcher, saying, ""Boy am I lucky. This will make a great poem!"

Listen to Joey play Erik Ross' Succession More Musicians ... Back to MSO Kids Mr. Salvalaggio performs regularly on CBC Radio in recital and gave a performance of all Canadian music at the 2002
    International Double Reed Society
Convention in Banff, Alberta, Canada. He has premiered works by Erik Ross and Lothar Klien and given the Toronto premiere of Marjan Mozetich's Concerto for Oboe with the Sinfonia of Nations and frequently performs the infrequently performed (it's very hard) Byzantium for oboe and tape by Christos Hatzis.
In 2003 Joey will begin and end the year by performing the world premieres of two concerti written especially for him: in January, the Erik Ross Oboe Concerto with the Memphis Symphony, and in December, a trip back to Canada to perform the Elizabeth Raum Oboe Concerto with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra.
When he's not practicing or obsessing about oboe reeds, Joey likes to read, and from the Canadian literary tradition derives his deepest source of national pride; Margaret Laurence, Adele Wiseman and Barbara Gowdy are just a few of his favorite Canadian authors. In addition to this he is trying to find other hobbies, because everyone else seems to have more than just one. Canadian Joseph Salvalaggio discovered the oboe at the age of fifteen when it was brought to his attention that his high school had no oboist. Concurrently, it was revealed to him that the band was going on a trip to Florida. His choice seemed obvious: choose the oboe, get a great tan and embark on a life in music. Thankfully, all went according to plan. Soon after picking up oboe, he attended the
