New! On Blue's Waters , the first volume in the "Short Sun" series (a sequel series to the "Long Sun"), is scheduled for publication in October 1999 by Tor. Future titles (already sold to Tor) include In Green's Jungles and Return to Whorl Pre-order On Blue's Water's from Amazon. Gene Wolfe is, in my opinion, the greatest living science fiction writer. The Science Fiction Encyclopedia calls him "the most important writer in the field," so I'm not just a loony. Algis Budrys compared him to Mozart. He's really that good. Of other authors, he is perhaps most similar to (and borrows from) Jorge Luis Borges, Robert Graves, Jack Vance, and (in his short fiction) Orson Scott Card. His prose is masterful but often opaque; Wolfe is not light reading nor will you understand him on the first try. This web page is intended as a preview and encouragement to those who have not read him yet, a guide for those first encountering him, and a resource for those of us who are still wading the shallows of meaning in his works. "There is no category of human activity in which the dead do not outnumber the living many times over. Most beautiful children are dead. Most soldiers, most cowards. The fairest women and the most learned menall are dead. Their bodies repose in caskets, in sarcophagi, beneath arches of rude stone, everywhere under the earth. Their spirits haunt our minds, ears pressed to the bones of our foreheads. Who can say how intently they listen as we speak, or for what word?"

When Wolfe's Exodus from the Long Sun (1996) concluded, many residents of the unimaginably large spaceship called the Whorl had left it for the new worlds Blue and Green. Several of their enemiesnotably the chameleonlike, vampiric inhumu followed them, and now the usual human moral woes have sprung up. Horn, chronicler of the Long Sun series, enjoys moderate success on Blue with a paper mill, a happy marriage, and three sons. But the settlers are losing their modicum of technology, the threat of the inhumu is growing, and his town's leaders ask Horn to return to the Whorl from a settlement across the sea. Thus the stage is set for what Wolfe does best: an adventure occupying hundreds of pages quite compellingly, thanks to sea and land monsters, androids, a beautiful sea siren, and the shadowy natives of Blue. Despite his yarn's vast, sometimes confusing scope, Wolfe never sacrifices the telling intimate detail. His ear for dialogue and delicately considered ethical questions recalls Orson Scott Card's, and his way with subtle horror resembles Sheri Tepper's. Highly recommended. Roberta Johnson (Booklist/October 15, 1999)

Penguin/ROC, paper, $9.95 (0-451-45651-3). Beagle is the class act of fantasy writing, the only contemporary to remind one of Tolkien and, in his darker moments, Dinesen. The title story here concerns a modest man who sets off on a perilous journey across high mountains and is rescued from fearsome rock-targs by a race of gentle giants. He lives among them, novel as Gulliver, for 18 years, learning of their curious funeral rite: eating their dead. In the long romance "The Last Song of Sirit Byar," a traveling bard works magic with his songs, saving his last and greatest song to bring an old love back from madness, dying as he sings it. In "The Magician of Karakosk," a country-bumpkin wizard foils an evil queen by leaving out just one step in the incantation he teaches her, so that she turns herself into nothing more than wind. One of these six stories, "Lal and Soukyan," uses characters from

Gene Wolfe
Futura 1987, Tom Doherty 1989 A book review by Danny Yee Latro, a barbarian serving in Xerxes' army, suffers a head injury at the battle of Plataia and is afflicted with recurrent amnesia, leaving him unable to remember the past each morning. In return he is given the ability to see and talk with gods and spirits. This is the premise of Gene Wolfe's Solider of the Mist , which purports to be Latro's diary (written in archaic Latin). Gathering an odd collection of companions - a faithful slave-girl, an Ethiopian, a necromancer of ambiguous sexuality, Amazons, prophets, and poets -, Latro visits Thebes, Corinth, Athens, and Sparta, takes part in the siege of Sestos, and explores Thrace, before a culmination at Delphi and a departure for Italy. Some of Wolfe's fantasy meanders too much for my liking, with a continual flux of new characters and plot elements and a lack of overall cohesion. In Soldier of the Mist the familiarity of the setting prevents this being disorientating; it is also consistent with the premise. The fantastic and magical elements are skillfully managed, with suspension of disbelief never in doubt, and the result is an unusual and effective blend of fantasy and history - one more convincing in its feel for the period than many straight historical novels.

Check out website: www.orionbooks.co.uk T his is an excellent novel but it's not fantastic. It is a mainstream novel, marketed as a fantasy because Wolfe is a fantasy writer but really it is no more of the genre than 'Picture This', Joseph Heller's quirky book about Rembrandt. Perhaps Heller's book should be reclassified as fantasy?
The narrator is Alden Dennis Weer, an old man looking back on his life and sometimes (this is the only fantasy element) re-entering it. Remembering himself as a middle-aged man visiting the Doctor he suddenly speaks to the Doctor as an old man, asking advice on the ailments that will plague him in the Doctor's future. Such incidents are fantasy blips though, in a generally mainstream narrative of small-town America, of interesting neighbours and dotty relatives.
There are stories within stories. Weer listens to one of his Aunt's suitors telling a tale then goes to bed to read, whereupon the story he reads is narrated. Despite some skipping about the main path of the book is linear, from past to future. It is divided into sections each with a main character.
