21. Paul McAuley And Jack Womack Interviewed - Infinity Plus Non-fiction
jack womack When writing a science fiction novel that actually employs real scientific possibilities as the plot drive,
http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/intpmca-jw.htm
Paul McAuley and Jack Womack:
a double interview Jack Womack: When writing a science fiction novel that actually employs real scientific possibilities as the plot drive, how do you settle upon a realistic supposition as to when what would be really possible in the real world as opposed to simply scientifically possible, or even probable? I think a good example here would be the scramjets, which I gather are theoretically buildable now, or will soon be what would enhance the probability that Virgin, say, will find this the way to go? Paul McAuley: As far as I am concerned, construction of a future in which technology has advanced along several fronts, including those important to the plot, is a lot more empirical than I hope it seems to be. I don't sit down with a large sheet of paper and lots of coloured crayons and graph everything out (although I did do quite a bit of research on Mars, of course), and I don't do a lot of thinking about things which are outside the purlieu of the novel (I don't know what TV programs are like, for instance, but then, Mariella doesn't own a TV), although I do try to be receptive to stuff which is floating around in the media I use. And I do try and get the feel of a cohesive future, which is why there are both scramjets, which can get you across the States from coast to coast in less than an hour, and an advanced propulsion system which gets everyone to Mars in a reasonable time.

Jack Womack Book Reviews
by Mac Tonnies Painting by Fred Gambino. Jack Womack's cautionary near-future novels are hip, strange and moving. A master of first-person narratation, Womack gets inside the heads of an unlikely cast of characters for whom our worst apocalyptic fears are everyday reality. Womack's books are characterized by visceral shocks and a deeply penetrating concern with the role of human beings when faced with the unbearable. Wildly emotional and colored by an expert grasp of language, Womack's canon is a must for anyone who thinks William Gibson's "Neuromancer" is the final word on cyberpunk. Click on a cover to order! GOING, GOING, GONE "Going, Going, Gone," Jack Womack's last "Ambient" novel, is dark, hilarious and touched by the dementia that made "Elvissey" and "Terraplane" (Womack's other time travel novels) so much fun. While "Terraplane" and "Elvissey" show us an alernate world in the 1930s and 1950s, respectively, "Going, Going, Gone" opens in the 1960s, experienced by swinger/government agent Walter Bullitt. Plans to assasinate presidential hopeful Bobby Kennedy (in Bullitt's universe, JFK is am embittered record salesman) come to a jarring end when Bullitt escapes to the future, only to find out that the world he knows is on a transdimensional crash-course with another timeline. Psychedelic and menacing, "Going, Going, Gone" closes on a note of transcendence and dry optimism; Womack knows the obscure workings of history, and his ability to subvert the American Dream is uniquely arresting.

Strange Book of the Month Club
Ablaze! The Mysterious Fires of Spontaneous Human Combustion
  • by Larry A. Arnold
  • M.Evans Press, 1995, hardcover, $24.95 Spontaneous human combustion (SHC, to the cognoscenti) is possibly the most unnerving Fortean phenomenon, unless you really delight in the idea of suddently bursting into flame while sitting peacefully in your chair one night. Skeptics will more readily believe that the face on Mars is that of Gerald Ford than to even consider the possibility of SHC. Let me say that I, doubter plus ultra , do suspect something like SHC can happen, although I don't believe it happens very often. Just as well, I'd say. At 478 elite-typefaced, narrow-margined pages, "Ablaze!" easily surpasses the two older books on this subject (Harrison's "Fire From Heaven," Randles' "Spontaneous Human Combustion") in providing a good introduction to the concept of SHC for the layperson, and an handy encyclopedic catalogue for the advanced student. There are problems, of course. Mr. Arnold includes much purely anecdotal, ergo worthless material, as Forteans are too often wont to do. He also, unfortunately, discusses such things as burns caused by UFOs, ley-lines of fiery nature, kundalini, etc., which make it all the easier for the non-believer to shudder, and toss the book aside. He attempts to proffer explanations for the phenomenon (he has a background in mechanical and electrical engineering, not necessarily an advantage here), talking much of what he calls

Dick Award-winning author of Elvissey and Random Acts of Violence . He joined us in Head Space to discuss pseudoscience and science fiction - the weird intermingling of psi powers, Dianetics , Forteanism, and perpetual motion devices with a literature devoted to technocratic rationality. Among his other achievements, Womack is one of the foremost collectors of '50s UFO books . He'll also tell us a bit about his next novel, Let's Put the Future Behind Us , which is set in contemporary Russia. allynb asks: Will there ever be a mass market edition of Elvissey? Womack: Allyn, at present Tor is taking Elvissey out of print. I hope to resell all the previous works to Grove, who seem to want them. allynb asks: Do you recall the Hieronymous Machine that Campbell did a feature on? Womack: Yes. Campbell had such a weakness for pseudoscience. drdisco asks: You mentioned that you're a fan of Alan Moore, and his favorite mag is The Fortean Times . Do you read it as well?

Going Going Gone by Jack Womack
(HarperCollins Voyager, £6.99, 218 pages, paperback; 4 December 2000.) This is one of those great little novels that's far, far too likely to go unnoticed: a cheaply produced, seemingly uncopyedited, possibly unproofread and certainly rather expensive paperback original, it has been shoved hesitantly onto the market in the traditional book-trade death zone of early December, when booksellers are too tied up in the festive frenzy of discovering how vastly they've over-ordered all the October books that no one wants to buy for Christmas to be remotely interested in stocking any further titles. The bright side of this is that publishing a new book at such a time is almost inevitably an express one-way ticket to the remainder bookshop, so that by the time you read this you may be able to pick up Going, Going, Gone for a fraction of the price indicated above.

Welcome to Omni Visions. Our guest tonight is Jack Womack. Womack's latest novel is LET'S PUT THE FUTURE BEHIND US. Set in post-Soviet Russia, this is not really a departure from the rest of his writing when you get down to the themes and world in which the characters dwell. Jack, tongue only somewhat in cheek, has described this novel as historical fiction. To learn why, pick up the current issue of SPIN Magazine to read some of Jack's journalism on modern Russia. Howdy, Jack! To begin, is there any easy way to describe the Dryco series? MsgId:

The best way to describe the Dryco series is to say that it's today's world tomorrow, a little more intense and a whole lot worse. MsgId:

What themes would you say emcompass the series? MsgId: Date: Thu Oct 10 22:06:40 EDT 1996 From: At: The themes within the series are predominantly satiric, relating to interpretations of present-day imbecilities, and secondarily theologic. MsgId: Date: Thu Oct 10 22:07:56 EDT 1996 From: At: Have you encountered people who've missed the fact that they're satiric, and take such premises as the Church of Elvis seriously?
