THE TYRANNY OF THE CLOCK George Woodcock Modern, western man, however, lives in a world which runs according to the mechanical and mathematical symbols of clock time. The clock dictates his movements and inhibits his actions. The clock turns time from a process of nature into a commodity that can be measured and bought and sold like soap or sultanas. And because, without some means of exact time keeping, industrial capitalism could never have developed and could not continue to exploit the workers, the clock represents an element of mechanical tyranny in the lives of modern men more potent than any individual exploiter or than any other machine. It is therefore valuable to trace the historical process by which the clock influenced the social development of modern European civilization. It is a frequent circumstance of history that a culture or civilization develops the device that will later be used for its destruction. The ancient Chinese, for example, invented gunpowder, which was developed by the military experts of the West and eventually led to the Chinese civilization itself being destroyed by the high explosives of modern warfare. Similarly, the supreme achievement of the craftsmen of the medieval cities of Europe was the invention of the clock which, with its revolutionary alteration of the concept of time, materially assisted the growth of the middle ages. There is a tradition that the clock appeared in the eleventh century, as a device for ringing bells at regular intervals in the monasteries which, with the regimented life they imposed on their inmates, were the closest social approximation in the middle ages to the factory of today. The first authenticated clock, however, appeared in the thirteenth century, and it was not until the fourteenth century that clocks became common as ornaments of the public buildings in German cities.

HENRY WOODCOCK Virginia Land Transactions Henry was quite a land speculator
Check out the Geography Lesson Henry and Eleanor along with their children, Thomas, Robert, Sarah, Mark, John and William moved to Bedford County Virginia sometime before November 1783. Henry and Eleanor probably owned land in Chesterfield County Virginia because they had at least 250 pounds available to purchase land in Bedford County. 26 November 1783
John Haynes Sr. and Sarah his wife and Aquilla Greer and Elizabeth his wife, all of Bedford County, convey to Henry Woodcock of Manchester Parish in Chesterfield County, for 250 pounds, 660 acres on the south side of Staunton River in Bedford Parish, bounded by Joseph Greer’s line.
Witness: John Banks, John Payn (probably misspelled), Thomas Woodcock
Bedford County Deed Book 7, page 270 NOTE: Manchester Parish became the city of Manchester and was the county seat of Chesterfield County from 1870 to 1876. It was incorporated into the city of Richmond, Virginia April 15, 1910.
NOTE: It may be assumed this money represents the proceeds of the sale of land in Chesterfield County and was probably a substantial amount at that time.

    Reader's Guide to Provincial Histories
Many of the provincial histories of British Columbia are in a pictorial format, a legacy of the three centennials the province celebrated between 1958 and 1971, each containing a few pictures of the Peace River region. The West Beyond The West J. Barman (T. U Of T, 1991) offers a historical account of British Columbia, with a focus on not just the leaders but also women, immigrants, and natives. For a more popular look at provincial history, G. Woodcock A Picture History of British Columbia (Ed. Hurtig, 1980), British Columbia : A Celebration ( Ed. Hurtig, 1983), and British Columbia : A History of the Province The province of Alberta has been written up by H. and T. Palmer Alberta : A New History (Ed. Hurtig, 1990) and Peoples of Alberta (Sask. Prairie, 1985) these books offer informative looks at the complex interaction and ethnic diversity of the peoples, with Peace River region identified in it relationship to the province as a whole. An earlier version J.G. McGregor A History of Alberta (Ed.Hurtig, 1972) focused more on the accepted version of history that portrayed a utilization of resources and praises the determination of the earliest inhabitants and immigrants.

by George Woodcock Mohandas Gandhi was the first of the great activist theoreticians who changed the shape of our world and the form of our thought during the present century. In 1894, nine years before Lenin gathered his Bolshevik faction within the Russian Social Democratic Party, and a quarter of a century before Mao Tse-tong embraced the revolution as a way of life, Gandhi began his activities among the Indians who lived a marginal and oppressed existence as merchants and indentured servants in South Africa. Combining thought with experience, Gandhi devised his own techniques of struggle arising out of the actual circumstances there, and in 1906, only three years after the Bolsheviks stepped onto the stage of history, he announced his pioneer Satyagraha campaign, developing nonviolent resistance as a discipline of social struggle. Truth perceived by individuals must always be relative, changing according to human contacts, developing as people better understand each other, their circumstances and themselves. Gandhi never set out to develop a fixed and final doctrine, but emphasized that his practice of Ahimsa, or nonviolence, was always experimental in a continuing quest for Truth, a quest that could never end because human understanding was incapable of comprehending the Absolute.
