Anne McCaffrey Acorna's People Dragonflight The Dragonriders of Pern Freedom's Choice ... Killishandra
Anne McCaffrey, who has inspired a loyal following of readers to keep up with the tales of Pern and the dragons and riders who dwell there, honored OtherSpace with an interview. We encourage our readers to order the books featured here to see more of her work.
Mikhar asks: What have been your main influences in your writing? Have you found yourself inspired by any other authors?
Anne McCaffrey answers: I was very young when my parents read to me from Rudyard Kipling, but I grew up wanting to emulate his ability to tell a story that makes you read and reread it. In my preteens, I liked Edgar Rice Burroughs because his Tarzan and John Carter stories were so unusual. Rereading him now, his chauvinism and conservatism annoys me. But he was a man of his times as I am a woman of mine. However, when I was fourteen, I read Austin Tappan Wright's ISLANDIA and Wright's philosophy had an intense appeal for me at that impressionable age which I have never lost. Gildar asks: Have any events in your books been symbols for a real life happening? if so, what?

Warning:
Emotions and tempers are sometimes aroused among those who have dedicated much of their lives to the devising and/or promotion of one planned language or another, when someone (for whatever purpose, and with whatever justification) disses somebody's favorite planned language. Consequently, the following material has, at times, been accused of being (a) inaccurate and (b) biased. No doubt, inaccuracies have crept in; and, as a proponent of Esperanto, I have never claimed to be unbiased. If you are looking for a totally objective, scholarly presentation of the history of the planned-language movement, I suggest that you look elsewhere. Another warning: you will probably not find it (everybody writing on the subject seems to have his own set of prejudices), and if you do it will probably be extremely boring. This presentation is, I believe, at least not boring. I can sum up the conclusions that can be drawn from this historical introduction in a relatively few words. Some one thousand (perhaps more) planned languages have been sketeched or created during the past two centuries; the approximately a dozen treated here are those that have actually been devised to a fare-thee-well and have actually acquired a community of speakers, of whatever size. At the end of this period, the number of speakers of Esperanto now living exceeds, apparently by several orders of magnitude, the total number of speakers of all other planned languages in this list who have ever lived. I suspect that this demonstrates something; but I will leave it to you to decide what.

Suggested Reading
Suggested, that is, if you want to understand my thinking. You might enjoy these books in any case!
  • Rissa Kerguelen , by F.M. Busby. A science-fiction book I read at about the time I was starting the company, and that influenced me deeply. One key idea is the role of entrepreneurship as a "subversive force." In a world dominated by large companies, it is the smaller companies that keep freedom alive, with economics at least one of the battlegrounds. Another critical idea is that of "the long view"the idea that some developments take years, and that you cannot control them, but can set them in motion, gauge their direction, and meet up with them years later. (In the story, this view is enforced by the logistics of star travel at near-light speeds, with years elapsing on the outside while months elapse for the travellers.) This book gave me the courage to submerge myself in the details of a fundamentally trivial business (technical writing) and to let go of my earlier hopes of writing deep books that would change the world.

Former President - Bill Clinton
We wrote to the Vice-President, the Speaker of the House, the Senate Majority Leader, and the President asking for their favorite books. As these things go, the only response we received was from the President:

The great thing about working here is finding just the right book to put into your hands when you want something new. Now that I'm working 'behind the scenes' I don't get to answer this question much anymore. But if you hear someone asking "What are your favorite books? They don't have to be science fiction or fantasy, tell me about everything." or "What book would be the right book for your mood right now if you hadn't read it already?" or (to someone contemplating buying the posthumous writings of J. R. R. Tolkien) "If I gave you a magic window so you could look over Tolkien's shoulder as he wrote The Lord of the Rings, would you look through the window, or not?" then that's me. ;-) My own yardstick for what's good is that the book be good for what it is. I can read highfalutin' stuff like Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun or action-adventure-y stuff like the Indiana Jones novels, depending on what I want at the moment; but it has to be good highfalutin' stuff or good action-adventure. I like stories where the setting is so rich the place is like a character in the story: Austin Tappan Wright's Islandia or Ursula K. Le
