An Interview with Charles Wright
by Morgan Schuldt
Mastery of an art form, as Pound said, is the work of a lifetime. For Charles Wright, art is life-time. The author of over twelve volumes of poetry including the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Black Zodiac and Country Music which garnered him the National Book Award, the work of Charles Wright remains visionary in the vein of Walt Whitman and Hart Crane. In his thirteenth collection of verse, A Short History of the Shadow , released this spring, Wright, with exquisite power, continues his self-exhaustive search for a poetry of transcendence and transformation. In short over the past thirty years, he has become one of America's most pre-eminent poets in the latter half of the twentieth century, and it was with this vantage in mind that I spoke with Mr. Wright. The volume Quarter Notes referred to in the text is a collection of Wright's prose works, critical musings and interviews, published by the University of Michigan Press in 1995. The following interview took place by post between February and April of this year. M.L. SCHULDT

Routine Call
When Officer Daniel Wright, of the South San Francisco police, responded to a routine shoplifting call at South City lumberyard, he had no idea what he was about to uncover. All that he knew was that a sales clerk had witnessed an Asian man hiding a bench vise inside his jacket, and had asked another employee to call the police. When he arrived at the scene he pulled up next to a 1980 Honda Prelude and was approached by the clerk and another larger man with a beard. The clerk pointed out the vise, which lay in the open trunk of the Honda and told Wright that he had seen the Asian man put it there before running off. Wright looked into the car and saw another bag containing what he thought was a handgun. After a closer inspection of the bag, he found a loaded .22 revolver and a silencer. At this point, the bearded man approached Wright and showed him a sales receipt. "Here's the receipt," he said. "I've paid for the vise my friend took, there's no need for the police." Without answering, Officer Wright returned to his car and used his radio to check the Honda's registration number. While he was waiting for a response he asked the bearded man

    * The Winningest Coach in Texas Football History * Charles Alan Wright:Coach and general manager of the Legal Eagles intramural football team.

Wright arrived in Texas in 1955 at age 28. During his first semester at the Law School, a group of students announced plans to form an Intramural touch football team. Wright, a football zealot who had played for Wesleyan University, wanted to know whether faculty could suit up. Sure, the students said, but would he coach, too? Wright agreed and christened the team the Legal Eagles.
    2. There should be no unnecessary penalties.
In 1968, under the tutelage of Bernie J. Ward, the Legal Eagles were not only undefeated and untied, but they were unscored upon, something no other Eagles team has ever achieved. Even from Connecticut, the mystique of Charles Alan Wright reached all the way to Austin, Texas. A special tribute to Charles Alan Wright is on display in the Gregory Gym Concourse. Home Captain Mike McElroy(third from left) and Legal Eagle teammates carry Coach Wright off the field to celebrate another undefeated season and championship.

A good man died last week, and we should remember and honor the name of Dr. Charles H. Wright for all time. His is the name on the largest African-American history museum in the world, here in Detroit. Dr. Wright started the museum, the first of its kind, in the basement of the building where he lived and kept an office as an obstetrician. It grew into the magnificant structure that's now a cornerstone of Detroit's cultural center. Dr. Wright's explanation for his efforts was this: "I'd bring healthy babies into this world and I'd see them later and they'd be psychologically scarred. I knew we had to do something about society, and the museum was an effort to do that." We all should honor that vision in a renewed effort to support the museum.

Charles Wright and the Museum of African American History
It was the dream of Dr. Charles Wright to develop a museum that would accurately chronicle the contributions and history of African Americans. He wanted to have a museum that showed the contribution of black men and women to the life and culture of this country. That dream has become a reality that has grown into the largest museum dedicated to African American culture and history in the world. A practicing physician, Dr. Wright used his vacations and other free time to travel the world and collect artifacts from Africa and all other parts of the world. bodyOffer(30570) In 1965, Dr. Wright converted a home he owned in a Detroit westside neighborhood and opened the International African-American Museum (then called (IAM). For the next thirteen years Dr. Wright continued to work and collect artifacts. He also developed outreach and educational programs to local and regional schools. Doctor Wright would often spend all his available free time lecturing school and community groups, showing artifacts, and engaging in fundraising for the museum. The museum soon became the sight of regularly scheduled field trips for many community and school groups in the region, with people coming from as far away as Western Canada. During this time Dr. Wright became the subject of many articles in newspapers and magazines, and local television and radio started to highlight his work. All the while Dr. Wright carried on an active medical practice as a well respected Obstetrican/Gynecologist at one of Detroit's most prominent hospitals. As the number of vistors grew Dr. Wright was forced to make some adjustments and hired a full time director for his museum in the early 1970's. Though never able to lend his complete attention to his project Dr. Wright remained, as he is to this day, deeply involved in all aspects of the museum.

Charles E. Taylor: The Man Aviation History Almost Forgot
    from 'Air Line Pilot'

By Bob Taylor When I was appointed safety program manager (airworthiness) for the Cleveland FSDO, one of the duties assigned to me was to conduct the Charles E. Taylor Award Program, the purpose of which is to honor the mechanics who have been connected with aviation maintenance for 50 years or more. However, one question always came up about the program: Who was Charles Taylor? I was embarrassed because I didn't know the answer. So I did some research, and here's what I found. article
    My Story
    from 'Air Line Pilot'
    April 2000, page 22
By Charles E. Taylor as told to Robert S. Ball When Orville Wright died Jan. 30, 1948, Charles E. Taylor became the only surviving member of the three who built the first airplane. Charlie Taylor was the only employee and intimate associate of Wilbur and Orville Wright throughout the critical years. Without precedent or fanfare, Taylor built the engines for the Wright's first planes to their designs. This article, written in 1948 while Taylor was living in retirement in California, was first published in Collier's, Dec. 25, 1948, and was reprinted in Air Line Pilot, December 1978. Taylor died Jan. 30, 1956, at the age of 88.
