It took an ex-physicist and a former ornithology studentalong with some unwitting help from a competitorto crack the secret of life BY ROBERT WRIGHT On Feb. 28, 1953, Francis Crick walked into the Eagle pub in Cambridge, England, and, as James Watson later recalled, announced that "we had found the secret of life." Actually, they had. That morning, Watson and Crick had figured out the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA. And that structurea "double helix" that can "unzip" to make copies of itselfconfirmed suspicions that DNA carries life's hereditary information. Not until decades later, in the age of genetic engineering, would the Promethean power unleashed that day become vivid. But from the beginning, the Watson and Crick story had traces of hubris. As told in Watson's classic memoir, "The Double Helix," it was a tale of boundless ambition, impatience with authority and disdain, if not contempt, for received opinion. ("A goodly number of scientists," Watson explained, "are not only narrow-minded and dull but also just stupid.") Yet the Watson and Crick story is also one of sublime harmony, an example, as a colleague put it, of "that marvelous resonance between two mindsthat high state in which 1 plus 1 does not equal 2 but more like 10." The men were in some ways an odd pair. The British Crick, at 35, still had no Ph.D. The American Watson, 12 years Crick's junior, had graduated from the University of Chicago at 19 and nabbed his doctorate at 22. But they shared a certain wanderlust, an indifference to boundaries. Crick had migrated from physics into chemistry and biology, fascinated by the line "between the living and the nonliving." Watson had studied ornithology, then forsook birds for viruses, and then, doing postdoctoral work in Europe, took another sharp career turn.

    Artist Statement:

My work is largely a result of creative accidents shaped by circumstance. Much of my work reflects my exposure to the enormous variety of cultural and physical environments that I have encountered while experiencing life; other parts reflect the dilemmas of contemporary existence.
The origin of my paintings on portraits stems from my fascination of charisma and the immortality within. In creating portrait paintings, I generally try to capture ones true emotion of eternal life directly to the canvas.
As far as meaning in my work goes, it has the meaning one reads into it. I believe that good art stimulates the imagination, and I hope my work does that. Much of it derives from subconscious influences in my immediate environment. To me, art is a way of both entertaining myself and expressing my imagination. It provides me with relief from the surrounding environment and is a reflection of the world we live in. Artistically, I would say that I am most influenced by the art of people living everyday life. To exist, life is paint and the world is our canvas.

JY was open, friendly and very easy to talk too! He signed our give away for this month and went out and played one hell of a show! We talked about the bands past, Tommy Shaw and even sports. A big CRR thank you goes out to JY and the rest of the guys in Styx!! JY: Jeb, JY, from Styx! CRR: Good Afternoon! How ya doing? JY: Pretty bleeping good! Not too bleeping bad! JY: GET IT ON!! CRR: How much of the new material are you playing live? JY: Well, Tommy and I. CRR: One thing about Styx is that no matter what album you listen to, you can always tell your listening to Styx. JY: That was are challenge. To try and make a record that could live in the last half of the nineties and sound like it was a contemporary record but still maintaining those elements that people classically associate with Styx. CRR: You have several vocalists and songwriters. With many personalities in the band, how do you deal with egos getting in the way?

Add to a Notebook In 1913 Vallejo enrolled again at Trujillo University and studied literature and law, and read voraciously about determinism, mythology, and evolution. After receiving a Master's Degree in Spanish literature in 1915, Vallejo continued to study law until 1917. However, his life in Trujillo had become complicated by a tortured love affair and he moved to Lima. Vallejo found work as the principal of a prestigious school. At night he visited opium dens in Chinatown and hung out in the Bohemian cafe where he met the important literary figures of the time, including Manual Gonzalez Prada, one of Peru's leading leftists. When Vallejo's Los heraldos negros was published, in 1919, it was received enthusiastically. Vallejo then began to push his talent in a new direction. Vallejo lost his teaching post for refusing to marry a woman with whom he was having an affair. In 1920, after his mother's death and the loss of a second teaching job, Vallejo visited his home. During a feud that broke out before his arrival in Santiago de Chuco, an aide to the subprefect was shot and the general store burned to the ground. Vallejo, who was actually writing up the legal information about the shooting for the subprefect, was blamed as an "intellectual instigator." In spite of protest telegrams from intellectuals and newspaper editors, he was imprisoned for 105 days. When released on parole, he left for Lima, embittered by the affair.
