47. SLOWRIOT DOT ORG | RICHARD WRIGHT
Focuses on richard wright's communism, particularly during his time in Chicago during the Great Depression. Also features his early revolutionary poetry.
http://www.slowriot.org/wright
Welcome to "The Spectacle of Glory", a website examining Richard Wright and his connection to communism. Wright was perhaps the most prominent black writer in America during the first half of the twentieth century: born in 1908, he was the author of bestsellers such as Native Son and Black Boy . He was also a member of the Communist Party for over a decade, and led a chequered life that saw him migrate from the South to Chicago, then on to New York and finally to France, where he died in 1960. His turbulent life is documented briefly here Living in Chicago during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Wright joined the Communist Party, and his early poetry was imbued with revolutionary rhetoric. Wright's communism has been the subject of great conjecture, some good analysis, and a considerable amount of misunderstanding. My MA thesis on the topic aims to clarify his motivations and the context of his communism, and is available for download on this site.

Wright, Richard Wright, Richard, , American author. An African American born on a Mississippi plantation, Wright struggled through a difficult childhood and worked to educate himself. In the 1930s, he joined the Federal Writers' Project in Chicago and wrote Uncle Tom's Children (1938), a collection of four novellas dealing with Southern racial problems. His novel Native Son (1940), which many consider Wright's most important work, concerns the life of Bigger Thomas, a victimized African American struggling against the complicated political and social conditions of Chicago in the 1930s. In 1932, Wright joined the Communist party but later left it in disillusionment. After World War II, Wright moved to Paris. His Black Boy (1945), also regarded as one of his finest works, is an account of his childhood and youth. Other works include Twelve Million Black Voices (1941), a folk history of African Americans; American Hunger (1977), a two-part autobiography;

  • Is this Rick's personal homepage?
    No, Richard Wright does not have a personal homepage.
  • But is this the official Richard Wright Homepage?
    No, the nearest you can come to an official page is the Broken China page by EMI.
  • Then who made this homepage, and why?
    My name is Torkjel Austad . I'm a 19 years old Norwegian student and I have been a fan of Pink Floyd for 6 years. As a keyboardist I soon got an interest in Wright's work with Pink Floyd and his solo albums. I felt Richard Wright often got pushed in the background of Syd Barret, Roger Waters and David Gilmour. So I've tried to set focus on Wright's work through the years in hope that people will be more aware of his importance in Pink Floyd as well as I hope people will buy and listen to his solo albums.
  • I bet you hate Roger Waters?
    Not at all! Don't get me wrong, I love all the Pink Floyd albums, and the solo albums too. In fact, I think "Amused to Death" is my favorite solo ablum.
  • Can I have Rick's e-mail or address?
    I don't have it, and I wouldn't give it to you if I had it either.
  • Do you have any contact with Richard Wright?

    Richard Wright - Black Boy
    Richard Wright - Black Boy
    is the first film on the life, work and legacy of Richard Wright. Born outside Natchez, Mississippi in 1908, Wright overcame a childhood of poverty and oppression to become one of America's most influential writers. His first major works, Native Son and Black Boy, were runaway best sellers which are still mainstays of high school and college literature and composition classes. According to critic Irving Howe, "The day Native Son appeared American culture was changed forever." Three years in the making, underwritten by the National Endowment for the Humanities and produced by Eyes on the Prize veteran Madison D. Lacy, Richard Wright - Black Boy is destined to become a definitive literary biography. It skillfully intercuts dramatic excerpts from Wright's own work with historical footage and the recollections of friends, associates and scholars such as Ralph Ellison, Margaret Walker, and Wright's daughter, Julia. They trace Wright's later development as a writer back to the brutality and racism of his Southern childhood - his father deserted the family, his uncle was lynched and he often went hungry. Wright's indelible portrayal of Bigger Thomas in Native Son and his own autobiography Black Boy lay bare the tragic connection between racism and powerlessness, despair, and self-destructive violence in many black males.
