c 200 BC ~ (Han Dynasty): Emperor Ai died without sons or a designated heir, attempting to give his succession to his male lover Dong Xian. Once, the two of them were sleeping side by side when the Emperor woke to find Dong lying on his sleeve. Not wanting to disturb his lover, the Emperor cut his sleeve. From then onwards, his courtiers adopted the cut sleeve as a fashion statement, in honour of Emporor's great affection for Dong. Gay love was refered to as tuan hsiu ; the passion of the 'cut sleeve'.

~ (Sung Dynasty): Homosexuality was also fashionable during this period. (back to top) (1122-256 BC) ~ (Zhou Dynasty): Popular poetry describes gay love as chong (favour/regular patronage). The Shi jing (Classics of Odes), includes a poem of love between two virile warriors; the story The King of Wei and Lord Long Yang; the story of the Duke Ling of Wei and his love for the man Mizi Xia; and the romantic tale of Pan Zhang and Wang Zhongxian. These last two were male lovers who slept together, sharing the same pillow. When they died they were buried together, and a tree suddenly grew on the spot, with branches that embraced one another. The mourners considered this a miracle, and called it the "Shared Pillow Tree."'
AD 220-280 ~ (Three Kingdoms and Six Dynasties Period): Ruan Ji (210- 263), lover of Xi Kang, composed several poems of love between men. From the

The underrepresentation of gay communities in the mass media has led to several undesirable effects on news reporting: underrepresentation, stereotyping, bias in news selection, and lack of objectivity, accountability, and content diversity. This paper examines (1) the status of gay access to the mass media in Taiwan , (2) the limitations of existing regulatory models for ensuring gay access.

Chinese Concubines: Stereotype vs. Reality
Even though becoming a concubine was not the worst fate for a young girl, some led truly tragic lives. In the upper classes, women were seen as particularly worthless because they did not work alongside their husbands like the women of the countryside did. This led to the glorification of women as frivolous pleasure objects and to the practice of footbinding to increase a woman’s dependence on the male members of her family. For people like Yang Yu-fang whose father married her off against her will to a warlord general, concubinage was torture, and to deal with depression and boredom many concubines became addicted to opium and gambling. Others like the character of Songlian in Raise the Red Lantern could not handle the restrictive atmospheres of their new families, squabbles and backstabbing among concubines, and disfavor; they went mad.

    Cancer Metastasis
    Research Description :
  • Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is an important human pathogen. HCMV infection usually develops asymptomatic lifelong infection in healthy individuals. However, it often reactivates in immunocompromised people such as AIDS patients and causes significant morbidity and mortality. For the past several years, we have made important findings on the role of immediate early protein IE2 (UL122) in regulating transcription of cellular genes (Huang et al. JBC 275: 12313, 2000; Chiou et al. J. of Immunol. 167: 4098, 2001). We are currently interested in understanding the physiological role of other immediate early gene products during HCMV infection and anti-HCMV drug screening. Cancer invasion and metastasis
Cancer metastasis consists of a series of cellular activities including tumor cell invasion, migration, and angiogenesis. We have successfuly established a human lung adenocarcinoma cell model which has several sublines of increasing invasive potential. This tumor model can be used to identify genes differentially expressed in cells of different metastatic abilities.
