Wyman, Max. Dance Canada: An Illustrated History Affectionate and anecdotal, this illustrated chronicle of dance in Canada tracks the growth of ballet and modern dance from colonial times to the present day. Interwoven with the story of the development of the art of dance itself are Max Wvman's fascinating stories of some of Canada's least-known cultural heroes and heroines. These passionate individuals persisted in bringing an understanding and acceptance of their art to their young country. The book follows the rise to international acclaim of Canada's three major ballet companies and individual artists such as Celia Franca, Karen Kam and Evelyn Hart, as well as the influence of luminaries such as Rudolf Nureyev and Erik Bruhn. And in documenting the astonishing creative ferment that has characterized the development of ballet and modern dance in large and small companies across Canada, the author contributes significantly to our understanding of the growth of the nation's cultural fabric. The publication of Dance Canada marks the first time that this important aspect of Canadian artistic history has been so fully explored. Celebrating the art of dance and dancers are 180 photographs, complemented by Max Wyman's writing, which animates the individuals, stories and occasions that have become history.

Biographical Notes Frank Augustyn, one of the foremost professional dancers in Canada, was trained at the National Ballet School and rose to prominence as a member of the National Ballet of Canada . In 1973, he and Karen Kain won a special award for best pas de deux at the Second International Ballet Competition in Moscow, dancing the treacherous Blue Bird pas de deux from The Sleeping Beauty in a version whose technical demands astounded the Russian sponsors of the competition. That win catapulted Augustyn and Kain to instant stardom, and they enjoyed a fabled partnership during their performing years. Augustyn went on to partner virtually all the ballerinas in the National Ballet of Canada, and established himself as guest artist with a number of other companies, including the Boston Ballet and the Berlin Opera Ballet . He danced all the major classical roles as well as significant roles in the modern ballet repertoire. He was a founding member of Ballet Revue (dancing his own piece, "Personal Essay") and has appeared frequently on national television. Since his retirement as a dancer, Frank Augustyn has been the Artistic Director of the Ottawa Ballet and of the international dance event, Le Gala des Etoiles, held in various locales including Montreal, Toronto, Quebec City, Athens, Thessaloniki, Jerusalem and Japan. He is current Director of the

Project: Measuring particle densities in turbulent clouds. The motivation of this project being that by knowing how the concentration varies from one point in a cloud to another, we might better understand precipitation development in clouds.
Theory: Part of Dr. Kostinksi's research has involved the statistics describing concentrations of particles in turbulent systems like clouds. Poissonian statistics have been thought to govern these concentrations but recent theoretical findings have shown otherwise.
Design: We will be using a turbulence chamber with small particles (water droplets). A humidifier has been procured for this purpose. The chamber itself consists of a horizontal cylinder with fans at each of the ends. A hose connects the humidifier to the center of the top of the chamber. By shining a laser into the chamber, light will be scattered by the droplets. This light will be detected using a CCD camera, and then analyzed i.e. the particles counted. Experimental Procedure: As earlier stated, a humidifier will provide the particles which are sent into the turbulence chamber. Upon entrance into the chamber, the droplets are mixed. The incoming laser beam is scattered and the CCD camera is placed such that it will detect forward scattering of a portion of laser beam. The images captured will then be sent into a program that will count the number of particles in it. By taking a large number of pictures, we are then able to get an idea of how the concetration varies i.e. is the variation Poissonian or not.

Mention of commercial products does not constitute endorsement by any person or organization. POSITION GIS for Transportation (GIS-T) is an interesting subset of the overall suite of technologies referred to as GIS. The requirements of GIS-T are intermediate between the purely cartographic applications and the more demanding topographic requirements of civil engineers. None-the-less, the GIS-T is an important component of the GIS community, and one where change is needed (Vander Veer, 1997). Proposed herein is a new direction in GIS for Transportation (GIS-T) infrastructure modeling which is potentially free of the pathologies associated with current LRS data models. A model is proposed which builds towards a 3-D GIS based on location references provided by GPS and its World Geodetic Spheroid 1984 (WGS84).

RELATED REVIEWS Rolling Stones Live at the Max (1991) Reviewed by Colin Jacobson Back in the summer of 1986, I bought a compact disc of a Rolling Stones album. I don’t recall which one - Let It Bleed , I think - but I do remember that the clerk made a comment such as, “Great band - too bad they broke up.” While no official action had actually occurred in that regard, this was the common opinion at the time. Following the spring 1986 release of Dirty Work , tensions between band leaders Mick Jagger and Keith Richards became well known publicly, and the group’s fairly to tour clearly showed the tensions; the Stones hadn’t played live since their 1981-82 world tour, and their absence from the stage with this new release - their first for Columbia - seemed particularly noteworthy.

January 23, 2003 Movie: Mulholland Drive salon :: :: movies :: feature :: Everything you were afraid to ask about "Mulholland Drive", By Bill Wyman, Max Garrone and Andy Klein :: Page 1 As I was watching this movie, I thought (besides how utterly confusing and weird it was) that this reminded me much of memento. I started falling asleep towards the end, after succumbing to confusion... I saw in the end credits that the film was dedicated to Jennifer Syme. God that name was so familiar... So, now I'm reading this article about Mulholland Drive on salon.com and am a) glad they explained the stinkin movie and b)surprised to see why the name Jennifer Syme was familiar. This is the girl that Keanu Reeves was with. They were going to have a baby, or had a baby, and the baby died. I didn't know the mother died (a separate incident, I'm sure). Anyway. Weird movie. Even if you don't blink, you'll still miss something. At least, I did. (but then again, I more than blinked). Posted by Karen at January 23, 2003 11:52 PM
Comments You're not alone on this one. Just when I thought I was "getting it," I didn't. I almost walked out on it, but kept thinking the end would tie it all together. I'll have to go to Salon.com and see what the hell was going on with it.
