ABC Embraces Family Programming
BY MIKE HUGHES, Gannett News Service One of television's newer ideas is also one of its oldest. Families especially those with children finally are thriving again in comedies. "We wanted to do a show about people who have kids," says Phil Rosenthal, producer of "Everybody Loves Raymond," "but not necessarily about the kids." He has one of the rare family-comedies to have everything: It draws praise, Emmy nominations and high ratings.

Columnists Wednesday, Apr 02, 2003 Glenn Garvin Posted on Thu, Jan. 16, 2003 ABC adds 3 new shows to TV's `reality craze' LOS ANGELES Reality shows like Survivor and The Bachelor are crack cocaine for TV programmers, producing quick, cheap ratings highs and a ravenous and self-destructive appetite for more, ABC executives said Wednesday. But they denied smoking too much of it, even as they announced three new reality shows for ABC's spring lineup. ''This reality craze can be like crack for network executives,'' admitted Susan Lyne, ABC's programming chief, speaking to a Hollywood gathering of U.S. television critics. ``And you have to be incredibly careful not to extend the number of time periods where you're using it.'' ''Incredibly careful'' apparently means not adding more than three hours of reality at a shot, since that's the number of new shows ABC unveiled Wednesday, all of them turning on sexual titillation, personal humiliation, or both: All American Girl 2003 , a hardball version of the Miss America pageant, with judges ruthlessly grading young women on their singing, dancing and looks. (No one mentioned intellect, which is probably already suspect for anyone who would be a contestant on a show like this.)

ABC executives defend new reality programming
By LYNN ELBER, AP Television Writer
LOS ANGELES (AP) - ABC executives on Wednesday defended their increasing reliance on reality programs as an inevitable part of reversing the network's fortunes. ABC will introduce four new reality shows in the next few months and the genre will account for about one-seventh of ABC's total schedule, ABC Entertainment President Susan Lyne said. But "Are You Hot: The Search for America's Sexiest People" and the other series won't dominate a schedule that remains mostly comedies and dramas, Lyne said. "This is not an either-or," she told the Television Critics Association. "It's all part of the process of rebuilding the network that was in some trouble." The network, which had a severe ratings swoon last season, has begun to revive with help from the reality show "The Bachelor" and spin-off "The Bachelorette," as well as several new comedies. Broadcast networks can't ignore the kind of programming that has demonstrated such appeal, particularly among elusive younger viewers, Lyne said. There is an awareness the reality craze can be like "crack" for network executives, she added, reviving a metaphor created by another network chief.

Language Teaching Through the Internet
CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning has left its infancy and the better programs of today utilise multimedia in all its aspects thus offering the learners self paced learning and just in time teaching in realistic situations with real language. However, there is one major drawback inherent in the traditional CALL; no matter how sophisticated the conversation is programmed to be, it is surrogate communication! Meaning that real communication can only take place between people who have something to communicate. I consider traditional essay writing to be surrogate communication; the students merely write to the teacher in order to get good marks or at best to improve their writing or show off their grammatical skills.
Through the Internet the students have access to real communication with the outside world. This fact should not be forgotten when creating Internet based exercises. Of course the Internet can also be used for the traditional CALL type of multimedia exercises with one truly great advantage: cheap world-wide distribution. Personally I have written several programs that never reached more than a few hundred users whereas my newest web-based application, which is available from the address: http://lang.ots.dk , reaches that number of users every week, even though it is a simple conversion of an old program and the conversion does not even meet half of the original interactivity!

Bruce ( CapeSoft ) has done it again. Released something that is a must have!
This is a must have for anybody wanting to dig deeper into ABC, methods, classes and overall learn something valuable.
The Package
I received the package via courier within 3 days. Inside I found the latest CapeSoft booklet with all the CapeSoft products nicely detailed.
Down to the reading
The book is written in a plain English so that even I could understand it. If you are just interested in reading then you could probably read the whole book in a matter of hours. However if you want to learn while reading then it will take you a few days, which is what I did.
The Reading Experience
Before I started reading I thought that this was just going to be another book that would not hold my attention for very long, I don't like reading manuals. I was completely wrong. This book is not written as a manual, it is a learning tool.

Review by Brice Schagane Once again, Bruce Johnson returned to the ETC conference for his presentation of Programming in Clarion's ABC.
Bruce has expanded his previous presentation at ETC 2000 to cover significantly more information. For example, attendees of this session received a 137 page book, written by Bruce Johnson, that details all the information discussed. The book for this year's session is approximately three times bigger than before.
Bruce opened with a discussion of some basic ABC terminology and outlined some goals of using ABC, the primary goal being: writing reusable, bug free code.
The information presented this year was simply overwhelming. The topics that Bruce covered included: Windows, Forms, Browses, Views, Reports, Processes, Files, Relations, Errors, Popups, INI files, and Edit In Place. Each topical discussion focused on the ABC Classes involved and how they relate to each other.
Bruce explained the relationships between "Generic" and "Specific" code and helped grasp the concept of "Virtual Methods", or "Pancakes" as he calls them. If your confused by this, don't be alarmed, I was too. Bruce was basically implying that the term "Virtual" is too vague, and should have been called something more meaningful.

For both ABC and NBC, power
of regular programming pays off Lead sweeps in households and prime demo
By Kevin Downey The race for the February sweeps ratings crown is coming down to which network has the best regularly scheduled shows.
Coming into the sweeps, ABC seemed like a shoo-in to win another sweeps on the strength of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"
But early estimates show that NBC’s strategy of breathing new life into its regular programming continues to give ABC an unexpected challenge.
Ratings through Sunday show that NBC has pulled ahead among adults 18-49 while ABC still has the edge in household ratings.
B ased on households, the peacock network now has a 9.4 /15 to ABC’s 9.6 /16.
Among adults 18-49, the demographic most prized by advertisers, NBC has the edge. Currently, NBC has a 5.9 rating to ABC’s 5.6.
Neither NBC nor ABC is using much in the way of sweeps programming stunts. Instead, both networks are relying on their strongest regular programs.
In ABC’s case, that is largely "Millionaire."
