The Anangu have been visiting the rock for millennia
Australia's aborigines have turned to digital technology to preserve their unique rock art for future generations, as Sharon Mascall reports from Melbourne. Uluru, or Ayers Rock as Australia's white settlers called it, is an icon of the Outback attracting millions of visitors every year. Its traditional Aboriginal owners, called Anangu, have been visiting the rock for millennia, documenting their creation stories and history at over 90 rock art sites around the base. Now, in a world first, they have teamed up with scientists from the University of Melbourne to preserve their art and ancestry in digital format. "It's very much what some people would call a keeping place," explains Cliff Ogleby, from the University's Department of Geomatics. "There are keeping places here, there is a men's keeping place and women's keeping place where things that are important to them can be kept and looked after.

By the BBC's Elizabeth Blunt in Durban Amid the diplomatic posturing and the haggling over language at the World Conference against Racism it is easy to lose sight of the reality of racism. Each day during the meeting in South Africa some of those who have suffered discrimination have been telling their personal stories. Among them is Monica Morgan, from the Aboriginal Yorta Yorta people of south-eastern Australia. There were 20,000 Yorta Yorta people in that region before the British - what Monica Morgan calls the "first boat people" - came in 1788. By the end of the 19th century, fewer than 100 were left. Trauma Now their population has recovered to 4,000, but she told the conference how the survivors had been traumatised by the collective effects of two centuries of racism.
Monica Morgan: Aborigines were "brainwashed" and "violated"
Her own generation has been marked by the removal of Aboriginal children from their families, the so-called "stolen generation".

click here to email   We follow the LORD Hi, thanks for your visit, allow me to tell you about myself and what we, Kathy and I, do. I am a 31 year old man who is a committed Christian. My wife and I are in full time ministry amongst the Australian Aboriginies in Wilcannia, New South wales, Australia I have been a Christian, in accordance with John 3:3, for approximately 12 years, and have to say that being a Christian is the most exciting adventure that anyone could have. In times past I used to believe that we came from monkeys and when someone said that if I believe that then 3 things would happen, (a) I would soon look like a monkey, (b) I would begin to act like a monkey and (c) soon I would begin to smell like a monkey. This got me thinking about my beliefs and was used by God to lead me into a personal and intimate relationship with Him. We have been in full time ministry for over 3 years and work under the infrastrucuture of Assemblies of God World Missions in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Out ministry in Wilcannia is to lay a firm foundation for an established Church amongst the Barkindji people (River People) and in the future that the people themselves may take the news of Gods' Love, Grace and Mercy to surrounding areas. Wilcannia was once a major port for the Paddle Steamers as it is located on the Darling River in New South Wales, Australia, and was once a thriving town with approximatley 3000-4000 people consisting mainly of caucasion origion. Now however, the population has dwindled to approximately 500 and is predominately Aboriginal. The town in past times had had a reputation of being a rough place, deemed not worthy to stop in, with tourist and truck drivers alike reluctanct to stop unless necessary.

PREFACE.
ANY attempt to fathom the depth of mystery which surrounds the history of the Australian Aboriginal must necessarily bein the maina failure. The subject is surrounded with difficulty. Captain Dampier was the first Englishman known to have made the acquaintance of the Australian natives, whom he calls "the poor winking people of New Holland, the miserablest people on earth," and so forth. During the intervening two centuries we have not added much to our knowledge regarding them. They have no written language, and are forbidden to speak of the dead: two serious obstacles to research. I am well aware that the subject is rather out of my line, and for this reason alone I can scarcely expect to do justice to the theme. Nevertheless, during my wanderings through Western Australia, in the capacity of a mining engineer, I came across a good many of the natives; and taking a profound interest in everything connected with the colony I resolved to set down in brief and simple form such facts as I could glean regarding this most curious specimen of the human race. I lay no more claim to originality than is due to one who has arranged his matter in his own way, and added a few thoughts suggested and accruing.

U.S. military police accused of assaulting Aborigines
April 7, 1997
Web posted at: 10:09 p.m. EDT (0209 GMT) IPSWICH, Australia (CNN) Aboriginal lawyers on Monday accused U.S. military police of participating in a recent clash between local police and Aborigines outside a nightclub in Queensland. The attorneys also asked the Criminal Justice Commission to investigate whether excessive violence was used by Queensland police arresting Aborigines outside the Ipswich nightclub. The March 22 incident, which resulted in various charges against seven people, was captured on security video. "This is just outrageous I mean for this sort of thing to be occurring here and for the American military police to also be involved," said Pat Thompson of the Ipswich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service. No immediate public comment about the accusation was available from U.S. officials. Local police have denied using excessive force, pointing to an "ongoing battle" in Ipswich involving Aboriginal youths taunting and assaulting U.S. servicemen. The security video shows Queensland police arresting young Aborigines outside the club. Onlookers watch as police punch and kick the men in order to subdue them. Later, men in military camouflage fatigues and M.P. (military police) armbands join in and help police subdue a man; their actions appear less aggressive.

Finding texts about Australian Aboriginal religion in the public domain was extremely difficult. There is a landslide of 19th and early 20th Century books and articles about American and African indigenous traditions, many treating the subject with sensitivity and great depth. Only a few Australian works from this period are available, and most of them are pretty vague on the details. Some of this can be attributed to the traditional tribal secrecy, which is maintained even to this day. Please be mindful of the historical context in which these books were written. The obvious problem with these books is that they were written by White Australians during the early twentieth century. This material contains racist and sexist characterizations, inaccurate depictions of aboriginal life and misrepresentations of their spiritual practices. Some of these documents contain completely fictional material which was the invention of the author, and have no actual basis in aboriginal belief or traditions. Descriptions of some of the ceremonies in these documents or the naming of dead people may regrettably violate Aboriginal tabus. These texts are provided for scholarly purposes and should not be considered definitive material on Aboriginal culture, only as a starting point for discussion.

Australia's history

The word Aborigine is a concatenation of the Latin words ab (from) and origine (beginning) meaning being there from the beginning or native . It is the second word the white people used for the natives after calling them Indians . Initially the word aborigine probably involved some kind of disdain. Recent findings in Kakadu Nationalpark show that there might have been human life in Australia for up to 60.000 years , while referring to former estimations the aborigines came overland from New Guinea about 40.000 years ago.
The aborigines' life was ruled by their relation to their land. In their point of view their land didn't mean possessing land but was just a certain region through which the members of a clan had wandered within several years. Everything the people needed for living was given to them by their land. So getting food was one of the main tasks during the day. While men kept traditions and went hunting, women collected small animals, fruits and parts of plants that could be used for food, tools or clothes. Women as well prepared meals. So the aborigines were nomads, several small groups who met from time to time in order to maintain traditions and keep cultural and social heritage. These traditional values are often called dreamtime and are stored in dreamtime stories. A lot of songs and dances base on these stories and were used to transfer the knowledge and tradition to the following generations. In addition a lot of dreamtime stories were expressed in paint art like rock paintings or bark paintings.

Art was always important in aborigines' life and you will soon recognize that when you are visiting Australia.
There are various directions of aboriginal art, some of them are several thousand years old. The original works are rock arts, body painting and ground design dating back to 30.000 years ago. In addition the aborigines do dot and bark paintings as well as silk painting or wooden crafts for rituals, cultural ceremonies or music.
Most of the used depictions base on the so-called ancestor's dreamings which date back to the making of the world - the 'creation'. The most important supernatural beings are the rainbow snake, the lightning man and wandjina - beings with fertility coming from the sky and the sea.
Because of the various tribes it is difficult to inpretate the 'creation dreamings' with all its tellings, so that the meanings of the depictions are depending strongly on the area where the crafts were created. Felsen
rock art Rock arts have been developing in its appearance beginning with hand and grass prints followed by the naturalistic style which was dominated by long lines depicting humans and animals, sometimes filled with colours. Then the dynamic style began where movements were skillfully shown for example using dotted lines for flying spears. During this time the first mythological beings appeared. The next styles showed humans silhouettes and so-called yams figures, in which humans and animals were depicted in forms of yams (or vice versa!). In addition the 'X-ray style' was used. Animals and mainly fish were painted with bowls ans bones. 1000 years ago when the formerly salty marsh lands had become fresh water pools and flora and fauna had changed accordingly these changings were integrated in aborigines' art. 400 years ago even white humans were depicted, e.g. fishing men or Europeans as well as the things they brought with them like ships or horses.

The immigration
The Aborigines have the longest cultural history in the world, with origins dating back to the last Ice Age. The first humans travelled across the sea from Indonesia over a landbridge to Australia and Tasmania, about 70,000 years ago. The next immigration followed 20,000 years later. The members of this group which had spread over the western part of Australia are the Aborigines' ancestors. The whole continent was colonised within a few thousand years. When the Europeans came to Australia in the 18 th century, they found about 750,000 "primitive" natives, as they called them, who seemed to live there as in the Stone Age.
Life
The Aborigines did not have agriculture and did not learn how to tame animals. They therefore had to live from what nature gave them. Hunting was therefore the only thing which they could do to get food. The men hunted animals such as kangaroos, snakes and emus. The women caught smaller animals and picked fruits, honey and seeds. They dug with graving tools for edible roots. The Aborigines had to walk around very much. Therefore they only carried the items they really needed with them: e. g. a spear, a boomerang, a wooden shild, a bag, wooden bowls, grindstones, graving tools and their cult objects (for example their famous paintings on barks).
Social organisation
Approximatly 500 various tribes existed. Each had their own territory, dialect or language. The leadership, if we can talk of a leadership, consisted of some of the oldest men of the tribe. When the Europeans came they could not find any uniform language, because after the immigration the Aborigines dispersed very much.
