  • Only league/tournament WINNERS from the state of OHIO may participate
    in the regional and state competitions. League/tournament winners are those who are currently participating in
    existing Ohio competitions that have written bylaws and/or rules. The league/tournament MUST have a minimum of EIGHT DIFFERENT
    participating high schools. A team may be composed of 4 (minimum) - 8 (maximum) members, grades
    Only ONE team per high school may participate in regional and state competitions. League/tournament runners-up in local competitions are NOT eligible for the OAC tournament. If a tie for first place occurs locally, ONE winner must be determined. Each team MUST be prepared to supply an experienced person who will be accessible to assist with the timing or scoring of matches.

Academic Tests for NCJCL Courtesy of http://www.ncjcl.2y.net There are five divisions for all contests: levels I, II, III, IV, and V* (*Level V will be graded as a separate level only if a delegate has a score equal to the 3rd place score in Level IV test.) Each student must take tests on the level of Latin most recently enrolled. Academic contests are offered in the following areas:
  • Latin Grammar
  • Classical Mythology
  • Latin Derivatives / Vocabulary
  • Roman History and Life
  • Pentathlon (the four areas listed above plus Latin Literature) The proper scantron form will be supplied for the students at the convention. Failure to use the supplied form or to fill in the required information properly will result in the student's test not being scored. The format of the tests is as follows:
  • The tests contain material appropriate for all years of Latin.
  • The questions are multiple choice.
  • The testing period is one hour long.
  • A student may take more than one test in the hour.
  • Proctors are present at the test sites.
  • Delegates may not bring notes, reference books, or materials into the testing rooms.

    Extra-Curricular Programs Athletics Tom Zasada Athletic Director Teams compete in football, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls soccer, volleyball, wrestling, boys and girls swimming, baseball, golf, and boys and girls track and field. Adult athletic booster clubs support and promote activities at their respective high schools. Academic Competitions Hammond students participate in a variety of academic competitions throughout the school year. Academic competitions have a knowledge-based focus and extend the curriculum beyond what is expected of a typical student. Academic Decathlon Nine-member teams study throughout the summer and fall to prepare for competition in math, science, language arts, fine arts (art/music), social studies and economics. Students must also prepare a four-minute speech, be ready for a two-minute impromptu speech, participate in an interview, and write an essay on a predetermined topic dealing with the theme of the competition or a literary selection. Each student on the team must participate in all ten events; and each individual score is added to a final team score. Both individual and team medals are awarded. Top teams move on to national competition. Spell Bowl School teams of 10 students compete for honors in this spelling competition. A typical competition may be composed of 10-20 school teams from the Lake County area. The highest scoring teams from throughout the state (approximately 10%) are invited to a state competition.

    Academic Competitions There are a variety of competitive academic team and individual competitions at Monte Cassino. Team competition includes Academic Bowl and Mathcounts. Individual competitions include the National Spelling Bee and the National Geography Bee. Beginning in grade five, the Academic Bowl teams compete against other schools in Oklahoma. Monte Cassino's seventh and eighth grade teams were state champions in 1998 and in 2000 and have competed on the state level for the past 5 years. There is also an Academic Bowl disk competition on subjects such as Humanities, Literature, Math and Science. Monte Cassino teams consistently place in the top 20 teams in the state. Mathcounts is a competitive math competition for middle school students. Students compete for team and individual trophies. Monte Cassino has competed in the National Geographic Bee for over 10 years. The school has produced an Oklahoma State Geography Bee winner in 1998 and in 2001. A student from Monte Cassino has placed in the top 10 students in the state for the past four years. Monte Cassino students also excel at the National Spelling Bee with students placing well at the city and regional levels of this competition.

    Back to Academic Handbook Academic Competitions Throughout the year the following interscholastic competitions are available for students who wish to be involved. Acalympics
    Teams of five students compete with Class B schools in Cass County. All academic areas included in the competition. Two teams are allowed from each school. Teams from grades seven through nine compete in the fall. Teams from grades ten through twelve compete in the spring. Cass County Spelling Bee
    The Cass County Spelling Bee held in the spring is open to students in grades six, seven, and eight. The winner of an Oak Grove competition earns the right to compete in this second step of a competition that ends in Washington, D.C. The first- and second-place finishers at this competition are eligible to participate in the North Dakota Spelling Bee. Whoever wins the competition in Bismarck is entitled to travel to Washington for the National Spelling Bee in May. JETS
    This competition in the areas of mathematics and science using problems typical to engineering is open to students in grades ten through twelve. Teams of eight students work together on the problems given. Competitions in the Spring begins on the state level and winners earn the right to go to the national competition. Mathcounts
    On the national level the Mathcounts program is a cooperative project (among others) the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This mathematics competition is open to students in seventh and eighth grades. Scores are kept for both individuals and teams through the competition. The state team for the national Mathcounts in Washington, D.C., in May will consist of the top four North Dakota finalists.
