We will give these collections of writing to the parents at the Sixth Grade Graduation in the spring. Young Authors Young Authors is a writing program that allows students to submit books that they author for judging. The books must be turned in before the Spring Vacation. As your child is working on this project please remind him or her that they need to keep their reading audience in mind. The topic and the language used in these books should be appropriate for the judging process. Books that contain themes of violence or inappropriate language will not be passed on to the ISD for judging.

Academic Competitions and ASC Region V 1997 Academic Competition Survey Data

Key Words: Academic Competitions, Intrinsic Motivation, ASC Student Competitions, Competition Teams Introduction Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) student competitions are not new to the association. In fact, various student academic competitions have been with us for many years. The effectiveness of these competitions as educational tools is not fully known. Some scholars even debate the role of competition in the educational arena. Academic competitions seem to be growing in popularity. Many industry people find the competitions to be a very effective means to evaluate potential employees. The students who participate in these competitions also welcome the exposure to potential employers. The question which must be asked by educators is: "are these competitions meaningful educational experiences, and if they are not, then why are we spending valuable time and assets towards the implementation of these competitions, especially if the only return from the competitions is measured in terms of successful job placements?". Some information has been published regarding the effectiveness of competition as it relates to education. This research will: 1) share information regarding other student competitions, 2) highlight some of the literature published regarding competition with respect to intrinsic motivation, and 3) share some of the data accumulated from a survey tool which was implemented during the 1997 ASC Region V student competitions. Based upon this research an opinion will be offered regarding student competitions, thereby providing a platform from which further debates regarding student competitions can begin.

The Hunt culminates in an adjudication session chaired by a judge. During the adjudication, competing teams have the opportunity to challenge and defend their responses. Students learn teamwork, organization, library skills, critical-thinking skills and verbal communication. The High School and Middle School Scavenger Hunts take place during fall term.
