Data-driven Programming
Automation Creations, Inc. has been at the leading edge of data-driven web application development since the company began in 1996. We use a variety of programming, graphics, and layout tools to make the best use of available technology for our customer.
Examples of Data-driven Sites
Our MatWeb search engine has become our most popular application. For example, an engineer might be looking for a polymer with a density between 1.5 and 1.6 g/cc and a tensile strength between 200 and 220 MPa. Searching the MatWeb database, over 30 polymers that meet this criteria are located. The engineer can view the specific properties of matching materials, get information about the manufacturer, and view related materials. MatWeb remains one of our most popular data-driven applications with over 15,000 material data sheets displayed daily, and a database of over 28,000 materials (and growing). In addition, we have created similar online product selectors for several major manufacturers including Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, RTP Company, and Quadrant Engineering Plastics Products. We also developed an online real estate search engine.

PRObooks Mastering Visual Basic .NET Database Programming Now that Microsoft's .NET Framework is circulating in full force, every variant of programming book addressing the surplus of .NET topics is being published. One of these is Mastering Visual Basic .NET Database Programming . Although the book does a commendable job at describing the major facets of .NET and its data-access facilities, the title is somewhat of a misnomer. To be more accurate, the book should be renamed "Programming SQL Server 2000 with .NET using VB.NET Syntax," because the authors deal exclusively with SQL Server 2000 as the relational database management system (RDBMS). Developers using DB2, Oracle, and open-source offerings such as MySQL or PostgreSQL will find nary a reference to these back-end alternatives. Given this premise, authors Evangelos Petroutsos and Asli Bilgin do a great job of summarizing the most popular options for data access using ADO.NET and delivering the presentation using VB .NET Windows Forms or ASP.NET-generated browser pages. The authors presume little if any prior database development experience and dedicate the first quarter of the book to teaching database design fundamentals, SQL keywords, and popular Transact-SQL (T-SQL) functions. From there, the book provides numerous examples and clear explanations of interacting with this data using .NET objects.

MIDP Database Programming using RMS: a Persistent Storage for MIDlets
By Qusay Mahmoud
Release 1.0
December 2000 Persistent storage is a non-volatile place for storing the state of objects. For some applications, you might need objects to exist even after the application that created those objects quits. Without persistent storage, objects and their states are destroyed when an application closes. If you save objects to persistent storage, their lifetime is longer than the program that created them, and later you can read their state and continue to work with them. The persistent storage facilities provided in the Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) platform, such as the JDBC and Object Serialization APIs, are not suitable for handheld devices with a small memory footprint. This is because the storage requirements vary significantly from one resource-constrained device to another. For example, a MIDlet that lets you buy (add to your portfolio) and sell (delete from your portfolio) stocks through your cell phone needs a place to store the stock database. This article introduces the details of the MIDP Record Management System (RMS), a persistent storage for MIDlets, and shows how to develop MIDP database applications, using a stock database example. Throughout this article the terms
