Database Access Using Lightweight Applets
by Donald Bales , author of Java Programming with Oracle JDBC
Using HTTP as the communication protocol and a servlet peer for database queries, you can write a rich-content user interface applet that can dynamically interact with a database, yet remain small enough in size to perform well. In last month's article, "Dynamic Database Access from Client-side JavaScript" , we looked at an architecture for utilizing the services of an applet-servlet pair to provide dynamic database access for client-side JavaScript. There were, however, some drawbacks to this approach, the most important being the fact that this architecture leaves access to the database wide open. You can work around this issue by restricting which database objects can be accessed from the user id used to log into the database from

Using Remote Data Access with SQL Server CE 2.0
by Wei-Meng Lee
Microsoft SQL Server CE edition is the database server built by Microsoft to run on mobile devices. Besides being a standalone database for mobile applications, SQL Server CE also allows you to connect to your desktop SQL Server 2000 and perform remote data access and merge replication. In this article, you will learn how to build a .NET Compact Framework mobile application using Visual Studio .NET 2003 and how it can perform remote data access using SQL Server CE 2.0. For more information on .NET Compact Framework, see my previous article, " Developing Pocket PC Apps with SQL Server CE
Features of SQL Server CE 2.0
Figure 1 shows the main components in SQL Server CE and its relationship to SQL Server 2000 (on the desktop). Note : Figure is from SQL Server CE Books Online Figure 1. Architecture of SQL Server CE and its relationship to SQL Server On the client's end (mobile devices), the SQL Server CE Engine takes care of the data stored in the local SQL Server CE database. It also tracks records that are inserted, modified, or deleted when there is a need to maintain connectivity with the SQL Server on the desktop. The SQL Server Client Agent serves as the layer for programmatically manipulating SQL Server CE. It implements SQL Server CE objects such as the SQLCEEngine and Remote Data Access (RDA). This is the layer that your application interacts with when programming SQL Server CE.

93. DBMS - November 1996 - Database Programming With OLE And ActiveX
Microsoft's direction with OLE DB and its database products representsa programming model that emphasizes componentlevel access.

DBMS
Database Programming with OLE and ActiveX
By Ken North
DBMS , November 1996 Microsoft's newest DB application programming interfaces prime the pump for OLE and Internet developers. The SQL DBMS market has long been a buyer's market. To remain competitive, SQL vendors must improve performance, add features, and reduce prices. Vendors can no longer gain and hold market share based solely on the merits of a database engine or server a rchitecture. Ease of programming has become as much a part of a product evaluation as the results of performance benchmarks. Because programming features affect sales, most DBMS vendors recognize the importance of programming interfaces. The recently ado pted SQL Call Level Interface (CLI) provides little opportunity for product differentiation. In an era when embedded SQL and SQL CLI are standard, how is a vendor to provide unique programming features? The answer is objects.
What Is OLE and Where Did It Come From?
OLE is an enabling technology for building shared, distributed objects. A review of certain Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) and ActiveX concepts will help you understand this article. (See "Understanding OLE," DBMS, June 1995, page 50.) The binary-lev el incompatibility of classes and objects created with C++, Smalltalk, and other OOP languages created a demand for a shared-object architecture. Such an architecture would enable us to share local or remote objects among disparate programming languages and applications. The Object Management Group (OMG) responded with the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), and Microsoft responded with OLE 2.0. OLE is based on a Component Object Model (COM), which provides interoperability at a binary le vel.

Develop Access Database Applications Based on Excel Spreadsheets Have you reached the limit of Microsoft Excel? Has your collection of intertwined worksheets become too complex and too error prone to rely on? Are you using worksheets when you should be using databases? If you can answer yes to these questions, then you're not alone. Many businesses begin using Excel for analytical purposes, but over time find themselves facing a network of worksheets that has grown out of control. In such cases, it is time to convert the application to Microsoft Access. The AMULET software development staff can help you make the transition to a true database application that offers a significant ROI. We review your current methods, analyze your Excel worksheets, examine your processing and reporting requirements, and take an important step forward. We design a robust relational database to efficiently store your data. We develop well structured data entry, and query forms to deliver results quickly, and informatively. We create management reports offering features not possible with Excel. Finally, we wrap up the application components in an easy-to-use user interface, complete with user access security. CASE STUDIES National Advertising Agency University Research Department - The adminstrators for a large university research department managed all their grant budgets and cost projections using an ever-growing series of interrelated Excel spreadsheets. One day, the director had enough of the frustration, errors, and staff resource expense in dealing with this increasing problem. The department contracted with AMULET to build a more efficient database application using Microsoft Access running on the department LAN. After a short time of production use, the department was saving money and getting more reliable results.
