In American education, two trends have been apparent during the second half of the 20th Century: the disappearance of acoustics from physics curricula and the decline in the percentage of students who take physics, both in schools and universities. If you are diligent enough in gathering data, it is easy to make meaningless correlations, such as the high correlation found between the number of Republicans in the Congress and sunspots during the past century. However, I happen to believe that there is at least some causal relationship between the disappearance of once popular subjects, such as sound and light, from physics curricula in our universities and the general feeling in our society that physics is too difficult and uninteresting for the average student. Many high school teachers are recognizing the appeal of sound, and featuring it in their high school physics courses. I bring extra copies of Echoes to meetings of high school teachers, and they are enthusiastically picked up (and read). The ASA Technical Committee on Musical Acoustics has organized several successful workshops on teaching acoustics for high school teachers. Teachers who participated in these workshops went home with both hardware and software they could use in their classes. At these workshops, teachers assembled apparatus for acoustics laboratory and demonstration experiments using pre-cut materials supplied.

Listener Envelopment: An Essential Part of Good Concert Hall Acoustics
Just over a century ago, Sabine took the first step towards quantifying the acoustical characteristics of concert halls with his famous equation for predicting the reverberation time in a room. Many other efforts to quantify various aspects of concert hall acoustics followed. These early studies concentrated on monaural (monophonic) attributes such as reverberance, clarity, loudness, and timbre. In the late 1960's the importance of binaural effects (i.e., effects that require both ears) was recognized as critical to achieving excellent concert hall acoustics. These binaural effects are usually referred to as spaciousness or spatial impression. Spaciousness was described interchangeably as either an apparent broadening of the source or the sense of being immersed in, or enveloped by, the sound of the orchestra. A strong sense of spaciousness was felt to be a characteristic of such halls as Vienna's Musikvereinssaal or Boston's Symphony Hall which are renowned for their excellent acoustics. In his pioneering work on spaciousness, Barron found that strong reflections arriving at the listener from the side in combination with the direct sound shortly after, increased the apparent width of the source.

    The Ocean Acoustics Department focuses on the propagation and scattering of sound in the ocean using theory and numerical modeling backed by ocean experiment. We study the effects of variability in the ocean environment on sound, the so-called "forward" ocean acoustics problem, and we exploit our understanding to solve the so-called "inverse" acoustical oceanography problem, where sound is used as a probe to study the ocean environment itself. Research spans the frequency range from a few Hertz to hundreds of kilohertz. Department staff comprises acousticians who focus on the ocean acoustics problem, acousticians who collaborate with oceanographers to develop acoustical oceanography techniques, and oceanographers who use acoustics for their research.
