He was the son of John ADAMS , 2d president. Independence and Union were the watchwords of his career; a Union of the United States of North America to grow by the destiny of Providence and nature to become a continental republic of free men stretching from ocean to ocean and from Gulf to Arctic. "The Second Adams" was the only son of a president to become president; in fact, his parents actually trained him for highest office. His mother told the boy that some day the state would rest upon his shoulder. As he grew up with the new nation, he had during his long lifetime two notable careers, separated by a strange interlude. The first career was as an American diplomat who rose to become secretary of state. The second career was as a member of the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES and opponent of slavery. The strange interlude was as president of the United States; for four years the state did indeed rest, uneasily, upon his shoulder. Never publicly popular, often reviled by his political enemies, he nevertheless ended his life in the sunshine of national esteem. Early Life John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Mass., on July 11, 1767. During the first years of the American Revolution, he received his education principally by instruction from his distinguished father and gifted mother, the incomparable Abigail. As a boy of ten he accompanied his father on diplomatic missions to Europe. There he learned French fluently in a private school at Paris; next he studied at the University of Leiden. In 1782-1783 he accompanied Francis Dana, as secretary and interpreter of French (then the language of the Russian court), on a journey through the German states to St. Petersburg, returning to Holland by way of Scandinavia and Hannover.

JOHN QUINCY ADAMS (1767 - 1848) John Quincy Adams was born the son of John, who later became the second President of the United States, and Abigail Adams on July 11, 1767 in Braintree, Massachusetts. He was educated principally by his parents during his adolescence and later at private schools in Paris while accompanying his father on diplomatic missions in Europe. He also attended the University of Lieden while in Europe. He furthered his formal education at Harvard University on his return to the United States in 1785 graduating in 1787, then studied law under Theophilus Parsons in Newbury, Massachusetts. On completing his studies with Mr. Parsons he began to practice law in Boston in 1790. Adams had several articles published in the Boston newspapers defending President George Washington's policies. President Washington recognized the value of Adams as an ally and appointed him minister to the Netherlands from 1794 to 1797. In 1797 Adams was appointed as minister to Berlin where he remained until 1801. While on a mission to England Adams married Louisa Catherine Johnson, the daughter of the U.S. consul at London. After the election of Thomas Jefferson to the Presidency in 1801, President John Adams relieved his son from the Berlin ministerial position. John Quincy Adams returned to Boston and resumed his law practice. He sought a more active political role in U.S. affairs and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1803. He also served as a professor at Harvard University from 1806 - 1809. On the election of President Madison, Adams was appointed minister to Russia where he remained from 1809 - 1814. Adams was called to peace negotiations during the war of 1812 and was subsequently assigned to serve as U.S. minister to England. He was recalled to the U.S. by President James Madison to become Secretary of State.

Manus Hand Visiting John Adams' Grave Here I am in Quincy, Massachusetts on September 12, 1991. I spent one leisurely week of a two week vacation with my wife four months pregnant with our first child driving the eastern seaboard collecting dead president pictures. By mid-afternoon of September 12, we had reached Quincy, Massachusetts (the "C" in Quincy is pronounced as a "Z"), where John Adams and his son, John Quincy , rest. We reached the Adams National Historic Site at roughly 4 PM, lollygagged in the apple orchard for too long, then made our way to the guest house where we told the National Park Service guides there that we would like to both tour the house and see the Adams crypt. The crypt is in the basement of the Unitarian Church, about six or eight blocks from the Adams house, and we were told that the crypts are not open to the public, and only by special permission of the church could we even see the church itself. And we had missed the final house tour of the day. Our schedule was loose, so we could have waited until morning, but we had planned to drive out of the city that day. So.... Undaunted, I somehow convinced the guides, without actually saying so, that I was writing a book, and their earlier reticence to help changed immediately. A guide was "assigned" to us, and she not only telephoned the rector of the Unitarian church at his house and arranged for him to meet us at the church to show us to the crypts, but she gave us a personal tour of the house. The outbuilding which served as Adams' library was particularly impressive. This is not shown to the general public, so if you ever have occasion to visit the Adams site, make sure to ask if they will show you the library.

Adams, John Quincy (1767-1848) sixth president of the United States (1825-1829), who combined brilliant statesmanship with skilful diplomacy. As Secretary of State (1817-1825) he ranks among the ablest holders of the office, and he played a major role in formulating American foreign policy. As an eight-term member of the House of Representatives (1831-1848) he was a leading defender of freedom of speech and a spokesman for the antislavery cause. CAREER Adams was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, on July 11, 1767, the eldest son of Abigail and John Adams. Remarkably precocious, at the age of 12 he accompanied his father to Europe. He served as French translator to Francis Dana, US minister to Russia, in 1781-1783 and as his father's secretary in 1783, during the peace negotiations that ended the American War of Independence. He graduated from Harvard College and opened a law office in Boston. Adams's "Publicola" essays, attacking the views Thomas Paine expressed in the Rights of Man, won him early political recognition. In 1793 President George Washington named him minister to Holland and then sent him to London to aid John Jay in negotiations with the British which resulted in the so-called Jay's Treaty. In London he met Louisa Catherine Johnson, whom he married in 1797; it was a happy union, marked by deep affection. That same year he became minister to Prussia, with which he concluded a pact incorporating the neutral rights provisions of Jay's Treaty. In 1801 Adams was elected to the Massachusetts Senate and two years later to the US Senate. Although a Federalist, he followed an independent course. Adams's support of the Louisiana Purchase and his endorsement of the policy of commercial warfare promoted by president Thomas Jefferson led to a break with his party and his resignation in 1808. The following year President James Madison appointed him minister to Russia, where he did much to encourage Tsar Alexander I's friendly feelings towards the United States. As one of the delegates sent to Ghent to negotiate an end to the War of 1812, Adams found the British commissioners so intransigent that he had to approve a peace treaty (1814) that fell short of US expectations. In 1815 he was appointed minister to Great Britain, where he did much to ease tensions resulting from the war.
