Best Sellers Arguing About Slavery : John Quincy Adams and the Great Battle in the United States Congress by William Lee Miller Book Description In the 1830s slavery was so deeply entrenched that it could not even be discussed in Congress, which had enacted a "gag rule" to ensure that anti-slavery petitions would be summarily rejected. This stirring book chronicles the parliamentary battle to bring "the peculiar institution" into the national debate, a battle that some historians have called "the Pearl Harbor of the slavery controversy." The campaign to make slavery officially and respectably debatable was waged by John Quincy Adams who spent nine years defying gags, accusations of treason, and assassination threats. In the end he made his case through a combination of cunning and sheer endurance. Telling this story with a brilliant command of detail, Arguing About Slavery endows history with majestic sweep, heroism, and moral weight. Sent as minister to Russia in 1809, he was well received, but the Napoleonic wars eclipsed Russian-American relations. He then helped to draw up the Treaty of Ghent Monroe Doctrine In 1824 Adams was a candidate for the U.S. presidency. Neither he, nor Andrew Jackson , nor Henry Clay received a majority, and the election was decided in the House of Representatives. There Clay supported Adams, making him president. Adams appointed Clay secretary of state, over the Jacksonians' cry that the appointment fulfilled a corrupt bargain. With little popular support and without a party, Adams had an unhappy, ineffective administration, despite his attempts to institute a broad program of internal improvements.

John Quincy Adams: A Public Life, A Private Life
Author: Paul C. Nagel
Review prepared by Alicia Knight
There has been some discussion in literary circles over the last few years that John Adams has gotten "cool" again. With the arrival of McCullough's book as well as more negative publicity regarding Adams rival, Thomas Jefferson, Adams is being embraced by the 21st Century.
His son, however, remains a footnote in the pages of history. When he is remembered, it is for being the son of a President who later became President himself. Or perhaps people recall his controversial election. Or the fact that he and his father were the first presidents to lose reelection.
If that's where your knowledge of John Quincy Adams, or JQA as he would refer to himself, ends, and you would like to learn more, I recommend Nagel's book.
Nagel pays little attention to what we already know. He spends one very small chapter on JQA's presidency, understanding that Adams was so much more than a failed president. He was a diplomat, a state representative, a professor at Harvard, a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, President, and then finally a Congressman. He began his life claiming that he deplored politics and wanted nothing to do with his father's profession. Before his life ended, he admitted that to him politics was as necessary as air. In the beginning he accepted political jobs because they gave him time to do what he really loved: reading and writing. Adams was a President who wanted to be a poet.

Library of Congress John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States (1825-1829) and lifetime diarist. His father, John Adams , helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was the second President of the United States (1797-1801). John Quincy was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts in 1767. His early education, in mathematics, languages, and the classics, was by way of his father. He graduated from Harvard College in 1787 and studied law in Newburyport, Massachusetts under the tutelage of Theophilus Parsons . In 1790 he began the practice of law in Boston. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1802, served in various diplomatic posts and was President James Monroe's Secretary of State (1817-1825), in the opinion of many, one of the best to ever serve in that post. Adams was an abolitionist and opposed slavery in the newly admitted states. After completing his Presidency, Adams served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848. John Quincy Adams

    Birth and Education
    John Adams
Independence National Historical Park John Adams was born at Quincy, then part of the ancient town of Braintree, on the 19th day of October, old style, 1735. He was a descendant of the Puritans, his ancestors having early emigrated from England, and settled in Massachusetts. Discovering early a strong love of reading and of knowledge, proper care was taken by his father to provide for his education. His youthful studies were prosecuted in Braintree, under Mr. Marsh, a gentleman whose fortune it was to instruct several children, who in manhood were destined to act a conspicuous part in the scenes of the revolution.
He became a member of Harvard College, 1751, and was graduated in course in 1755: with what degree of reputation he left the university is not now precisely known; we only know that he was distinguished in a class of which the Dr. Hemmenway was a member, who bore honorable testimony to the openness and decision of his character, and to the strength and activity of his mind.
Having chosen the law for his profession, he commenced and prosecuted its studies under the direction of Samuel Putnam, a barrister of eminence at Worcester. By him he was introduced to the celebrated Jeremy Gridley, then attorney general of the province of Massachusetts Bay. At the first interview they became friends; Gridley at once proposed Mr. Adams for admission to the bar of Suffolk, and took him into special favor. Soon after his admission, Mr. Gridley led his young friend into a private chamber with an air of secrecy, and, pointing to a book case, said, "Sir, there is the secret of my eminence, and of which you may avail yourself as you please." It was a pretty good collection of treatises of the civil law. In this place Mr. Adams spent his days and nights, until he had made himself master of the principles of the code.
