ABIGAIL ADAMS First Lady of the U.S. Name at birth: Abigail Smith Abigail Adams was the wife of the 2nd U.S. president, John Adams , and the mother of the 6th U.S. president, John Quincy Adams . Abigail was descended on her mother's side from the Quincys, a prominent New England family. She married John Adams, then a lawyer, in 1764, and they spent much of their early life apart as John Adams travelled as a circuit judge and then became a key player in the American Revolution. Their fond, newsy and philosophical letters to one another during these absences have become famous both as evidence of a deep love affair and as a source of information about the Revolutionary era. Abigail lived briefly in Paris and London as John Adams served as U.S. ambassador to France and England, and she became a friend to First Lady Martha Washington when John Adams became the country's first vice-president under George Washington . John Adams became president in 1797, and after his single term ended in 1801 he and Abigail retired to their home in Quincy, Massachusetts. Abigail Adams died of typhoid fever in 1818; seven years later, in 1825, her son John Quincy became president.
Extra credit : Abigail and John Adams had five children in all: Abigail (b. 1765)

http://www.who2.com/johnquincyadams.html
JOHN QUINCY ADAMS 6th President of the United States John Quincy Adams was the son of President John Adams , served as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and was Secretary of State under President Monroe . In the presidential election of 1824, no one candidate received a majority of electoral votes and the election was decided in Adams' favor by Congress. The election of 1828 was the first in which the candidates were chosen by state legislatures instead of congressional caucuses, making the popular vote more of a factor. Adams lost by a wide margin to the Democrat from the south, Andrew Jackson . Although he served only one term as president, in 1830 Adams was elected to the House of Representatives, where he served for the remaining 17 years of his life.
Extra credit : Historian David McCullough's biography, John Adams , was an instant bestseller after its release in May of 2001... Adams and Jefferson , revolutionary cohorts and longtime political rivals, died in separate states on the same day: the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence... Adams was the first president to attend Harvard University and the first to have a son become president... Adams spoke before the U.S. Supreme Court in defense of the slaves who escaped aboard the ship Amistad ; he was played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1997 movie of that title directed by Steven Spielberg

John Adams (1735 - 1826) was the second President of the United States of America. He was President from 1797 until 1801. His Vice-President was Thomas Jefferson . Adams belonged to the Federalist Party. John Adams was born in Quincy, Massachusetts , on October 30, 1735. His father was a farmer. Adams graduated from Harvard University in 1755, and went on to become a lawyer in Boston. He married Abigail Smith in 1764, and they eventually had five children. Adams was a delegate to both the First and Second Continental Congresses, and helped draft the Declaration of Independence. After the Revolution, in 1783, Adams went to France to sign the Treaty of Paris, and became the first US ambassador to Great Britain from 1785 to 1788 (this was a very difficult position, since the British were not pleased with the outcome of the war). In 1789, Adams was elected the first Vice-President of the US, serving two terms under President

Visiting John Adams' Grave
Here I am in Quincy, Massachusetts on September 12, 1991. I spent one leisurely week of a two week vacation with my wife four months pregnant with our first child driving the eastern seaboard collecting dead president pictures. By mid-afternoon of September 12, we had reached Quincy, Massachusetts (the "C" in Quincy is pronounced as a "Z"), where John Adams and his son, John Quincy , rest. We reached the Adams National Historic Site at roughly 4 PM, lollygagged in the apple orchard for too long, then made our way to the guest house where we told the National Park Service guides there that we would like to both tour the house and see the Adams crypt. The crypt is in the basement of the Unitarian Church, about six or eight blocks from the Adams house, and we were told that the crypts are not open to the public, and only by special permission of the church could we even see the church itself. And we had missed the final house tour of the day. Our schedule was loose, so we could have waited until morning, but we had planned to drive out of the city that day. So.... Undaunted, I somehow convinced the guides, without actually saying so, that I was writing a book, and their earlier reticence to help changed immediately. A guide was "assigned" to us, and she not only telephoned the rector of the Unitarian church at his house and arranged for him to meet us at the church to show us to the crypts, but she gave us a personal tour of the house. The outbuilding which served as Adams' library was particularly impressive. This is not shown to the general public, so if you ever have occasion to visit the Adams site, make sure to ask if they will show you the library.

His father had married into a wealthy Boston family, the Boylstons, and was thus able to send his son to Harvard College, from which young Adams graduated in 1755. He then selected law and soon found that in the courtroom his acquired erudition and intellectual precision overcame his natural timidity, and he became a powerful speaker and an adroit advocate. At the age of 29 Adams married Abigail Smith , a woman who was clearly his intellectual and psychological equal.
