MARRIED:
Abigail Smith, 1764 CHILDREN: John Quincy, Thomas, Charles, Abby John Adams was born in a small New England village near Boston called Braintree. This village was settled by Pilgrims who had come to America from England in search of religious freedom. The young John Adams and his father often argued about how important it was to get an education. Young John often skipped school, and when his father asked him why, he told his father that all he wanted was to be a farmer. As he grew up, he realized that an education was important. He studied hard, then went on to college at Harvard. At Harvard he studied law, and upon his graduation he became a great lawyer. John Adams became famous for his strong opinion that everyone deserved a fair trial. He got national recognition in 1761 when, as a representative of the state of Massachusetts, he fought the decision that gave the British the right to search any house, ship, or shop at any time without permission of the owners. In the words of John Adams, "Then and there, the child Independence was born." Later that same year, he married his childhood sweetheart Abigail Smith. Abigail was an outspoken lady who was opposed to slavery and believed that women should get the same education as men. Abigail Smith Adams was the only First Lady to have both a husband and a son as President of the United States.

"Men are governed by Words," he wrote. "Their passions are inflamed by Words." In David McCullough's majestic biography of Adams, the second U.S. President, one has a strong sense that it was literary ingenuity as much as a rich perceptive intelligence that defined his career. That is an interesting proposition and a lively way to approach a founder as feisty as he is underappreciated. A man of unquestioned integrity, Adams succeeded the larger-than-life George Washington and spent his one-term Presidency as an isolated and harassed executive. He inherited an unstable world and was forced to mediate his countrymen's anguished responses to Anglo-French war. The Jeffersonian opposition imagined Adams a pro-British monarchist, while frenzied Federalists, his own party, proposed war with France's revolutionaries out of a fear that they were stirring up America's masses. Adams kept the peace and received no credit for it.

First Lady: Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams
Vice President: John Caldwell Calhoun John Caldwell Calhoun (1782-1850), American statesman and political philosopher. From 1811 until his death he served in the federal government, successively as congressman, secretary of war, Vice President, senator, secretary of state, and again as senator. Always he was at the heart of the issues of his time, notably the nullification crisis and the conflict over slavery. Loyal to his nation, to his state of South Carolina, and, above all, to his principles, he sought to preserve the union while advancing Southern interests. Born in Abbeville district, S.C., on March 18, 1782, Calhoun grew up in an atmosphere of controversy and social change. The extension of cotton culture was bringing slavery into the up-country, where small farmers like his father were challenging the political dominance of the low-country planters. Calhoun was largely self-educated before he entered Yale as a junior in 1801. He graduated with honors in 1804; went on to law school, in Litchfield, Conn.; and was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1807. Calhoun's own future, both socially and economically, was assured by his marriage in 1811 to a wealthy cousin, Floride Bonneau Calhoun. The couple settled at Abbeville, moving in 1825 to the Fort Hill plantation near Pendleton, the future site of Clemson University.

Biography

John Adams, ad'[sch ]mz, 2d PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . He devoted his life to politics, participating with distinction first in the revolutionary activities of Boston and Philadelphia and later in the founding of the republic. He served as a Massachusetts delegate to the Continental CONGRESS , as a diplomat in the struggle to win European recognition of American independence, and as VICE PRESIDENT and president of the United States during its critical, formative years. Adams' diaries, letters, and books provide invaluable information about the politics of his time. His writings reveal the mind of an astute observer and philosophera very human one whose warmth, wit, and playfulness captivate the reader. His reputation as an intelligent and courageous statesman endures; but his name has been overshadowed by othersperhaps because he was not uniquely connected with any single great event. Boyhood and Education Adams was born in the village of Braintree (Quincy), Mass., on Oct. 30 (Old Style, Oct. 19), 1735. His parents and ancestors had been honored members of the community since its founding. His father, John Adams, was influential in town business, serving as selectman and officer of the militia; his mother, Susanna Boylston Adams, was known for her devotion to family and church. The Adams clan had arrived from England about 1640 and settled on land that their descendants were still tilling in John's boyhood.

Abigail Smith Adams Inheriting New England's strongest traditions, Abigail Smith was born in 1744 at Weymouth, Massachusetts. On her mother's side she was descended from the Quincys, a family of great prestige in the colony; her father and other forebearers were Congregational ministers, leaders in a society that held its clergy in high esteem. Like other women of the time, Abigail lacked formal education; but her curiosity spurred her keen intelligence, and she read avidly the books at hand. Reading created a bond between her and young John Adams, Harvard graduate launched on a career in law, and they were married in 1764. It was a marriage of the mind and of the heart, enduring for more than half a century, enriched by time.

ADAMS, John, these turbulent Gallits," our numbers would in another century exceed those of the British, and all Europe would be unable to subdue us. In sending him to College his family seem to have hoped that he would become a clergyman; but he soon found himself too much of a free thinker to feel at home in the pulpit of that day. When accused of Arminiamsm, he cheerfully admitted the charge. Later in life he was sometimes called a Unitarian, but of dogmatic Christianity he seems to have had as little as Franklin or Jefferson. "Where do we find," he asks, "a precept in the gospel requiring ecclesiastical synods, convocations, councils, decrees, creeds, confessions, oaths, subscriptions, and whole cartloads of other trumpery that we find religion encumbered with in these days." In this mood he turned from the ministry and began the study of law at Worcester. There was then a strong prejudice against lawyers in New England, but the profession throve lustily nevertheless, so litigious were the people. In 1758 Adams began the practice of his profession in Suffolk County, having his residence in Braintree.
