Many had not grasped the basics of reading, math or researching new avenues to enableus to help children and the symptoms of the process called add and ADHD
http://www.naturesmightybites.org/kidsneedusnow/projects.html
IS THERE AN ANSWER TO THE VIOLENCE IN OUR YOUTH? With all the talk of violence in schools, children with guns and the lack of adequate reading and math skills, there is a preponderance of talk about behavior modification that seems to do little to solve the extraordinary problems affecting our youth today.
However from 1983 until 1996 the problems affecting young people have accentuated and the same therapies we used in the 80's became much less effective. We were baffled! Are children different? Is there a virus that causes violence that children are catching? Is there an answer that can help solve this paramount problem?
Since the 80's we have been researching new avenues to enable us to help children and give them back their self-esteem, their pride in themselves and give them hope for their futures. Numerous articles were read, books were scoured, lectures were attended and the answers given in the above seemed so great but in reality were nothing more then great ideas for a philosophical change. How can you expect a child who cannot process what you are saying to them to be able to put into action the philosophical tenets they do not understand? Is there an answer or is it hopeless and the only resolve is to arm ourselves to protect ourselves form being shot? April, 1996 was a turning point in the search for answers. I attended a lecture given by Dr. Barry Sears who gave the first realistic approach to helping people of all ages. The answer had been right in front of us for years but it took Dr. Sears approach to make it clear and concise. It then made sense why the great results we had in the early 80's began to diminish by 1985. The answer was the influx of the high carbohydrate, low fat, no fat diet. As insulin levels increase and the essential fatty acids decrease what follows is across the board symptoms of lack of attention, lack of focus, difficulty following through with projects and all the symptoms of the process called ADD and ADHD prevail. But is there a way to measure what is wrong? Is it the child's fault or is there a biochemical, and physiological reason why there are behavioral changes taking place.

Reading comprehension in children with ADD and ADHD, and books to help ADD and ADHD people with thier education in schools.
READING COMPREHENSION IN CHILDREN WITH ADHD
Unfortunately, many children diagnosed with ADHD go on to have important difficulties in their academic development. For example, prior research has shown that children with ADHD are more likely to have learning disabilities than other children, and are also more likely to be retained in grade at some point during their schooling.
One especially important area that has not been carefully studied is the effect that ADHD may have on children's reading comprehension. Because reading comprehension requires sustained mental effort and attention, it seems reasonable to expect that ADHD would have an adverse effect on this skill. In this study, the reading comprehension abilities of 21 children in grades 4-6 with and without ADHD were compared. What is noteworthy about the children in this study is that the authors first made sure that the two groups were matched on their basic sight reading skills. In other words, the children with ADHD were selected so that their ability to read individual words did not differ from the non-ADHD children. This enabled the authors to determine whether children with ADHD have deficits in reading comprehension even when their more basic reading abilities (e.g. their ability to read and sound out individual words) are intact. For the reading comprehension assessment, children were asked to read several passages of approximately 440 words in length from a 5th grade science text. After reading each passage, children were asked to rate on a 5-point scale how well they understood what they had just read. They were then asked to give the passage a good title and to identify the specific number of main ideas in the text and their accuracy in identifying the topic and main ideas present in each passage was evaluated.

What We Do For approximately 17 to 30 percent of all students, acquiring skill and fluency in reading is impaired. Difficulty with reading is commonly referred to as Dyslexia. The primary causes include deficiencies in phonological processing, auditory and visual memory processing and concept imagery. A reading problem due to these types of deficits does not go away with time. Dyslexic students struggle through school and become dyslexic adults. Until these individuals receive intensive, one-on-one tutoring that is adapted to their needs, they remain at risk for both reading and academic failure. We do thorough assessment testing with standardized measures to determine exactly what an individual's needs are. We provide one-on-one tutoring in reading and learning remediation using the most effective programs available. Because we have expertise in a number of different programs we are free to choose the most effective approach for each individual. In addition to providing one-on-one tutoring for individuals we also provide training to other professionals and parents who desire to use these programs. Now there is also a home version of the PACE program available BrainSkills. Just

Dyslexic people are visual, multi-dimensional thinkers. We are intuitive and highly creative, and excel at hands-on learning. Because we think in pictures, it is sometimes hard for us to understand letters, numbers, symbols, and written words. Diagnose Children with Dyslexia
The testing done by public schools to determine if a child qualifies for Special Education services is NOT the right way to diagnose dyslexia.
There is NO SINGLE test that proves a child has dyslexia.
In this week-long course, Susan Barton will show you how to combine information gained from an in-depth interview with the parent, plus work samples, plus the results of seven tests, to prove in writing that a child has dyslexia. Your written report will qualify that child for classroom accommodations through a 504 Plan, and will tell parents which research-supported tutoring systems will be effective for their child with dyslexia.
