Understanding the Issues
As prospective adopters know or will soon discover there are severe issues surrounding the adoption of children who have lived in institutional care. These issues may include delays in development; medical concerns; retardation of cognitive and language skills; and emotional and behavioral concerns. While such concerns are quite frightening when first encountered, it serves no one to have them discounted or overlooked. The adoptive family who explores these issues in depth and then knowingly accepts the challenges of adopting a child who has suffered the insult of living a life of privation sets the stage for a successful adoption.

Margaret McDonald, Post Adoption Resource Centre
Originally published/presented: The child as a client - The adoption perspective conference, Griffith University, April 1995
Introduction
So that we're all clear as to what we are talking about it may be helpful to start off with some dictionary definitions: From the Shorter Oxford Dictionary
  • Secrecy: The quality of being secret or of not revealing secrets; the action, habit or practice of keeping things secret.
  • Secret: Kept from the public knowledge or from the knowledge of persons specified. From the Macquarie Dictionary
  • Secrecy: The state of being secret or concealed; privacy, retirement, seclusion.
  • Secret: Made or negotiated without the knowledge of others. All of these definitions show us different aspects of secrecy, of themselves carrying no value judgement. We are all aware of useful and necessary secrets, and that the action, habit or practice of keeping things secret can be in both personal and professional relationships a most valuable attribute. From the title of my paper you will gather that I plan today to speak principally about the adverse effects of secrecy, basing these observations of our practice at the Post Adoption Resource Centre and the experience of our many clients who comment on the oppressive influence of secrecy in their lives.

Questioning the war Boykin's 411 In boards: Discuss this column A new film called "Daddy and Papa" looks at the issue of gay men adopting black children. Since many of these gay men are white, is transracial gay adoption a good thing? Many African Americans already have issues with transracial adoption, and many heterosexuals have problems with gay adoption. Combine the two and you have a powerfully controversial issue. 50,000 black children out there According to the federal government, more than 50,000 African-American children are available for adoption. Many are being selected by gay men such as Johnny Symons, who made the "Daddy and Papa" documentary. The arguments against transracial and gay adoption are not always based on prejudice. Opponents of the two types of adoptions tend to cloak their words in the familiar paternalistic language of "the best interest of the child." And arguably, a child might be more comfortable or even better off in a culturally familiar environment than in a nontraditional family. But that's as far as the logic goes. What's also clear is that all children are better off with a loving family than without a family at all. Those who argue for racial purity and sexual orientation litmus tests in adoption should explain how they plan to take care of the 50,000 black kids who need adoptive parents. It's not fair to the children to hold their happiness hostage to someone else's politically motivated agenda.

    58. Adoption Issues
adoption issues. by Marlou Russell,Ph.D. Despite this apparent openness in adoption, there is still a great need for adoption issues to be addressed.
    http://www.beachpsych.com/pages/cc60.html
Adoption Issues by Marlou Russell,Ph.D. In the old days, adoption was considered an unspeakable family secret that was shrouded in shame. Today prospective parents advertise with 800 numbers, pregnant women use the internet to place their babies up for adoption, and adoptees have a support group called Bastard Nation. Despite this apparent openness in adoption, there is still a great need for adoption issues to be addressed. Emotional Issues The adoption triad consists of the adoptee, the birth parents, and the adoptive parent or parents. All three are necessary and forever connected, whether or not they ever meet. The emotional issues that occur at the time of an adoption will continue to resurface and weave their way through a triad member's life. Seemingly simple questions can trigger the adoption-related feelings. A birth mother is asked how many kids she has...A physician asks an adoptee if cancer runs in the family...a parent is asked why the two children look so different. Adoption has lifelong impact for each triad member. In therapy the most common issues are feelings of lack of control, shame and embarrassment, rejection and abandonment, identity and roles, secrecy and honesty. Loss is an inevitable part of adoption. The structure of adoption is such that to create an adoptive family, a birth family must be separated and adoptees lose their biological ties.

    http://www.frontiernet.net/~manage/ccni/adoption.html
    Adoption Issues for
    Family Child Care Providers
Perhaps you have an adopted child in your child care home. Or you may be an adoptive parent yourself. In either case, you know that the blessing of adoption also causes special situations which need to be dealt with in a special manner. Most people do not understand the variety of pressures which adoption imposes upon a family. They may view adoption as a "perfect" solution for a family wanting children, for a birth-parent who is unable to care for a child, and for a child who enters a family with economic and social stability. Often, even when an adoption turns out to be joyous and fulfilling, it may be far less than "perfect."
    Prejudices at Work
Adoptive families face many stigmas and prejudices which non-adoptive families may not understand. For example, one adoptive mother says she feels as if she lives with the "ghosts" of the adopted child's birth parents. (When angered, the child would say, "My REAL mother wouldn't be so mean to me!"). Society introduces or explains children who have been adopted by labelling them as "adopted children," no matter how old they are or how many years or decades ago the adoption process occurred. For instance, read a newspaper carefully; the news media frequently include information about someone's adoptive status in their stories, even though it may not be relevant to the news.
