Adoption Issues
Multiculturalism is a popular phrase these days and, for those of us who have adopted children from China or elsewhere, we must understand the meaning of being multicultural and be sensitive to the issues that may arise. Balancing the child's heritage while integrating him/her into the adoptive family can be a very complex exercise. Adoption is an accepted route for single or married people who may have infertility problems or may not wish to bring a "natural" child into this world to start or enlarge a family. Adoption in and of itself brings new challenges beyond normal parenting, and interracial adoption adds even more. We are an adoptive family. Our children are of diverse cultural backgrounds. I am of Scottish/Irish heritage and my husband is of Lithuanian heritage. As we prepared to adopt a child from a different racial group than ours, we realized we would have to re-evaluate what we had previously thought about adoption. While respecting our child's natural family and ethnicity, our adopted children would integrate and become ours in the adoptive sense. It is easier to integrate a Caucasian adoptee into a Caucasian family, since we don't "look" different than the child. Not so with transracially adopted children. We do look different and we have now become a minority family, potentially subject to criticism, odd remarks and prejudice from people of all races. Adoption in and of itself makes our children unique. Children all want to feel that they are the same: it is hard for them to think of their life experiences as different or helpful to others. They want to blend, and do not want to be separated from their friends by the word "adopted". There are a lot of questions, sometimes even anxieties, as children grow up, and the need for a very concrete and affirming concept of adoption and the adoptive family experience becomes more and more important. Besides dealing with their own racial views, parents also need to help their children identify with their race. Research studies have shown that transracially adopted children sometimes identify with their parent's race rather than their own. Culture is passed on by families. It's "different on top of different" and the child is going to look for ways to understand why she/he isn't the same and how she/he should respond to this.

Course Description
This class is designed for the foster or kin-care provider who has a child already in placement that they are preparing to adopt. Due to the changes in the federal law (1998 Adoption and Safe Families Act), care-providers are being asked to consider adoption rather than long-term foster care. This class will answer common questions that care-providers have about adoption. Topics will include adoption and the law, the family life cycle and adoption, how childhood trauma interferes with the development of a child, the seven core issues of adoption, and maintaining connections with the birth family. On-line courses are convenient in that they let you access the material when it best suits your schedule. However, you should be aware, and budget accordingly, that the course will require 2-3 hours per week. The benefit is that you, the student, will choose when those 2-3 hours take place. I would recommend that you actually schedule the time rather than just hoping to get to the coursework in between everything else in your life. This one dynamic has affected students more than anything else.

Volunteer About This Site Found a Problem? Have a Suggestion? ADOPTION ISSUES FOR LESBIAN WOMEN The experience of adoption for adopted people changed significantly in 1976. Children's Act gave adopted adults access to their original birth certificates and, thereby, an opportunity to search for original family members. We have counselled hundreds of such people who wish to search for birth relatives, particularly mothers. For women whose sexual orientation sets them apart from the majority, this concern can be greatly heightened and the process of reunion made more complex. By A.Fitsell

AIA to Help States with Code Adoption Issues
By Mrs. Victoria Zambito Published: Monday, June 25, 2001 Updated: Tuesday, July 30, 2002 The American Institute of Architects throws more support behind a single family of codes. The AIA Board of Directors approved a motion to develop a program to assist local and state components with issues surrounding adoption of building codes in their local jurisdictions. The AIA’s codes and standards committee proposed the motion. The AIA has backed a single family of codes for more than 25 years, and has actively participated in the development of the International Code Council’s 2000 edition of the International Building Code and related codes. In a December 2000 report, the Board’s Codes and Standards Task Force found that the International Codes most closely met the AIA’s code standards, which says the organization supports codes that are comprehensive, coordinated and contemporary, and are developed with an open consensus process. The AIA represents over 66,500 registered architects and associate members practicing throughout the world.

Scupola This article presents the preliminary findings from an explorative case study concerning barriers, benefits and use of SMEs adoption of business-to-business Internet commerce. The main findings were that SMEs embrace the Internet mainly just by chance (J-B-C); the government and public administration are seen as the main change agents in the adoption and diffusion of Internet commerce among SMEs; cost is not an important factor in the adoption decision; setting up an advanced home page with a shopping basket for buying and selling on the Internet is often seen as a minus rather then a plus for competitive advantage; complementary factors among which digital imaging technologies and spreading of English as a common business language have to be developed in order to increase the value of Internet commerce to small business. When parents cannot agree on custody of a child, the trial judge (or in Texas, a jury may make this decision) must determine with which parent the child will live. Norwegian Church Approves Gay Adoption
The Church of Norway has approved adoption by gay men and lesbians The secretariat of the National Council of the Church of Norway has said that allowing same-sex couples to adopt children is a valid arrangement for the children, although they added that it was not ideal. The church council, the Kirkeradet, said that despite the fact that they believed a family with same-sex parents was not the ideal, the love, security and stability that children might find within a gay family relationship was what mattered most. The decision puts the Kirkeradet in line with the government. Norway has plans to amend the laws regarding gay partnership registration and adoption. The proposed changes would enable a registered gay couple who already have a child to adopt more.
