Finding Standards
Finding Lesson Plans There are several resources available at the CIMC to locate lesson plans: MadCat
Searching MadCat will locate lesson plans from books (textbooks and other instructional materials), videos, or software. You can find lesson plans in a couple of different ways. Perform a Guided search, using "lesson plan?" as a keyword phrase (i.e., choose "as a phrase" from the drop-down menu to the right and "Keywords Anywhere" from the "Search By:" menu). You can also combine the topic for which you are trying to locate lesson plans with the subject phrase "study and teaching". For example, to locate lesson plans on weather, enter "weather" on the first search line, choosing "Keywords Anywhere" from the "Search By:" field. On the second search line, enter "study and teaching," choosing "as a phrase" from the drop-down menu to the right and "Subject" from the "Search By:" menu. Please Note: Searching MadCat will not locate lesson plans contained in education journals.

The Learning Resources site offers web-delivered instruction using current and past CNN San Francisco bureau news stories. Western/Pacific LINCS (part of the National Institute for Literacy's LINCS Project), Literacyworks, and CNN's San Francisco bureau have partnered to develop an online literacy site that benefits all learners and instructors. This material is intended for adult literacy and educational purposes. Though the intended audience is adults, instructors and learners (of all ages) are encouraged to use this material to promote better literacy. Each module includes the full text of each story and interactive activities to test comprehension. The learner can choose to read the text, listen to the text, and view a short video clip of the story. Each module is designed for ease of use so the learner can use it independently. The instructor can also incorporate any story into class activities and lesson plans.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT FOR DEAF AND HARD-OF-HEARING STUDENTS
GRADES: 1-4
Just a few tricks I use to keep kids organized and to integrate language and literacy development throughout the day.
  • Have students write down their lunch order (if they have a choice) on laminated posters, using wipe-off markers/crayons. I use one poster with pictures and words to show all lunch choices and mark them with marker as to the feature of the day. The students write their name and lunch choice so that I can record them on our lunch order sheet.
  • Kids keep track of weekly center work using their own manila folders with center checklists inside. On this list appear all the possible centers available that week, space for them to write their name and the date each center assignment was completed, stars to color in to rate the center (1-3, 1 being "yuck" and 3 being "my favorite!"). I then leave a space where I can make comments about student progress, attitude towards work and areas of need. These are sent home weekly to parents, so they are kept abreast of their child's progress.
  • I use a wipe-off board to list daily schedules, including time, short phrases describing what's happening and pictures for my emergent readers. For my ADHD/behavior challenged kids, I refer to the schedule often and have them cross out what we've completed this helps them get through the day with less outbursts and to be able to complete work, knowing that recess will happen shortly!
