Adult Education Programs, N.J.A.C. 6:30 Summary The rules governing Adult Education Programs, N.J.A.C. 6:30, will expire on December 6, 2000, unless they are readopted. Executive Order No. 22(1994) directed the Department to conduct a comprehensive review of all chapters of Title 6 to identify rules "which are not necessary or which promote inefficiency or are overly prescriptive." Based on the Department's plan to conduct the comprehensive review of administrative code, the Department will review this chapter and related chapters and will present changes for consideration. The purpose of this proposed readoption is to prevent the current rules from expiring while the review is in process. In addition, Governor Whitman has recently appointed an Adult Literacy Council. This Council is to facilitate planning and oversight among the State's adult literacy systems and workforce readiness agencies. Readoption of the existing rules without change will allow the Department of Education sufficient time to consult with the Adult Literacy Council before developing new rules for adult education. This chapter establishes rules pertaining to the administration of adult basic skills and literacy programs, English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, Evening Schools for Foreign Born Residents, General Educational Development (GED) programs, adult high schools and apprenticeship programs.

Adult Education Adult High School Completion The Adult High School Completion Program is offered free of charge to qualified adult non graduates and GED certificate holders. Classes include core subject areas: math, science, computers, English, history, government, social studies, and a wide variety of electives including vocational and technical classes. Twenty credits are required for adult education students transferring from a regular scheduled high school. Twenty four credits are required for students transferring from a block scheduled high school. The programs is funded by state aid dollars, grants and fees. Morning, afternoon and evening classes are offered. Adult Basic Education Basic reading, spelling, writing and basic math classes are offered to help adults learn to read and improve their basic skills. Funding for the VISTA workers was made possible by an AmeriCorps*VISTA grant awarded to the department's Adult and Community Education Office. "Each volunteer has participated in required training in preparation for their assignments," Toombs said. "The VISTA volunteers act as fundraisers, grant writers and recruiters for their counties. The goal is to establish a legacy for their programs by promoting ongoing volunteer efforts in the communities they serve."

Once a fishing and hunting camp for Inland Tlingit and Tagish First Nations people, the gold rush, the White Pass and Yukon Route railway (completed 1901), and a short mining boom in the area changed the local social fabric. Today, it's the home to about 400 peoplehalf of whom are First Nations. Tourism has replaced both mine and rail as the mainstay of the local economy. The Campus The campus has offered basic adult education programs since it opened in 1981. It works closely with the Carcross/Tagish First Nation to help prepare its people to administer their pending land claim and self-government agreement. While core programming has remained much the same over the years, emphasis is placed on community development. Strong partnerships have formed with the Carcross/Tagish First Nation and other community groups. Local staff run the basic adult eduction programs. They meet other community needs by designing and delivering a variety of additional programs and courses. These include First Nations training, early childhood development, computer training, tourism, small business and art courses. Students also contribute to community development projects like the publication of a newspaper designed to boost tourism in the area.

Old Pine's Sunday School and Adult Education Programs Children are central to Old Pine life. We as a congregation take seriously the promises we make to children at their baptism and strongly support the nurture and education of the children of our church family. Old Pine offers infant and nursery care during Sunday morning worship and activities. Qualified sitters attend to a small child's needs so parents can worship with complete peace of mind. Sunday School classes are open to children of all ages. Children aged 10 and younger accompany their parents to worship at 10:30 a.m. and then are dismissed after the "Lesson for Young Christians." Classes meet in the nursery room of the Old Pine Community Center which features an arts and crafts area, and a safe, enclosed outdoor play deck. Music is as important to Sunday School children as it is to adults. Tom Faracco, Old Pine's music director, invites all school aged children and youth to join in the Old Pine Children's Choir. Rehearsals are every other Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the Old Pine Community Center. The children learn seasonal music and take full part in celebrations during the church year. Adult Education programs are offered regularly throughout the church year programs that range from Bible study to questions currently facing our denomination and the Christian church as a whole.
