Adult education
Adult education can be divided into general adult education and vocationally oriented adult education.
General adult education, in general
The general adult education centres offer qualifying single-subject instruction. They offer those subjects which are completed with an examination after the 9th and 10th forms of the Folkeskole as well as the subjects which form part of the higher preparatory examination (HF). It is possible to sit for examinations in all subjects. It is the aim of these courses to give adults a possibility of improving or supplementing their general knowledge and skills. The State defrays the expenses in connection with the holding of these examinations, whereas the counties pay for the teaching. The educational institutions are free to admit all qualified applicants. The non-residential folk high schools etc. offer teaching, the main aim of which is liberal education for persons over 18 years of age. The offer, which is organised as full-time education for people with a low level of educational attainment, is meant to strengthen the personal development of the participants and to improve their possibilities in the education system as well as in the labour market. Up to 1/3 of the teaching time at the individual course may be spent on qualifying education. The expenditure is financed by the State, the counties and the municipalities. There is free intake to this provision. General adult education also comprises the courses held under the "Act on Folkeoplysning"

Sabo A. Indabawa University Adult Education Development in Namibia Founding of the Department I n order to implement its Mission, the University of Namibia (UNAM) has set up academic and service units and has mounted a variety of programmes leading to academic and professional qualifications from Diploma to doctoral levels in various disciplines. Currently, the University has a total of seven Faculties, five Centres and 26 Departments. One of the Faculties is the Faculty of Education, which has six Departments. The latest is the Department of Adult and Nonformal Education, also called DANFE. This Department was formally founded in December 1997 with the appointment of its first Head, who was later joined by a second member of staff in February 1998, before the commencement of its activities in March 1998 and the start of formal teaching activities in January 1999. The major rationale for establishing the new Department was clearly stated by the University Vice Chancellor on the occasion of its formal inauguration when he said: “The Department was established to address some of the key problems which faced our nation (Namibia) at the onset of independence: the problems of adult illiteracy and inequity in access to education ... (which is) the key to prosperity and human advancement ... The Department was indeed conceived in an attempt to achieve justice and fairness in the delivery of education to the people in post-apartheid Namibia...”

Daniel A. Wagner
A large number of thematic studies were commissioned in preparation for Dakar. Together with his colleagues, Professor Daniel Wagner, Director of the International Literacy Institute, Pennsylvania University in Philadelphia, USA, surveys and summarizes ‹n his paper the present state of the debate. The complete version can be requested from UNESCO in Paris at www.education.unesco.org/efa
Daniel A. Wagner Literacy and Adult Education
Executive Summary Introduction
The 1990 World Conference on Education for All (WCEFA) in Jomtien, Thailand included adult literacy as one of its six major worldwide goals. Specifically, a number of national educational goals related to youth and adult education were agreed upon, including: (1) to reduce the number of adult illiterates to half of the 1990 level by the year 2000; and (2) to improve learning achievement to an agreed percentage of an appropriate age cohort (which might vary from country to country). As part of all Jomtien goals, a new approach to learning was emphasized, one that focused on measurable learning achievement (rather than mere class attendance or participation). These challenges, then, have formed the basis for much of renewed international interest in literacy and adult education over the past decade, and, in many ways, remain the continuing Jomtien challenge for the first quarter of the new millennium. Although the complete elimination of illiteracy by the year 2000 was adopted as a goal of UNESCO and a significant number of its member states in the Udaipur Declaration of two decades ago, the Jomtien Conference scaled back such promises, and chose a more modest, and theoretically achievable, goal of cutting illiteracy rates in half by the year 2000. The reasons for this reduction in targeted goal were numerous. As this report will describe, important gains have been made in literacy and adult education over the past decade since Jomtien – in various places and using various methods – but the overall literacy situation remains still today one of the major challenges of the 21st century.

    Lifelong Learning
Lifelong learning has been promoted by policy makers over the past two decades as an important route to secure individual and societal welfare. What is the quality of learning opportunity in Canada? What are the important factors contributing to learning outcomes? Is access equitable? How can the disadvantaged in our learning systems be helped? Are there "market failures" in our learning systems which deserve public policy attention? These are the key questions for research in this thematic area.

A Report on Adult Education and Training - Learning a Living
Statistics Canada, Human Resources Development Canada
    May 2001
Organization of the Report The introduction briefly sets the report in context. It also mentions the survey goals, describes the data sources utilized and reviews the conceptual framework and definitions of adult education and training employed in the study. Furthermore, it outlines the future goals of analysis for policy development in adult education and training. Chapter 1 explores dimensions of the demand and supply of adult education and training in Canada with a view to identifying mismatches and market failures that may exist. Attention is paid to analysing systemic barriers to participation, particularly for low-skilled adults. Canada's provinces and regions differ greatly in industrial and occupational structure and in the educational attainment profile of their respective labour forces, implying significant differences in the supply and demand for skills. This chapter therefore seeks to describe differences in the size and structure of the adult education and training systems across provinces and regions. Chapter 2 uses data from the most recent AETS as well as previous collections. It provides an historical perspective on how the market for adult education and training in Canada has evolved over the past decade. To the extent the data allow, both the incidence and the volume of participation are traced over time and across provinces and regions of Canada. Methodological issues arising from the analysis of trends are addressed.

But you don't need a biology degree to understand all the terms writes DR AMIN ABBOUD. The fundamental ethical issues are easy enough to understand.
Why are we having this debate?
Regenerative medicine is an exciting new field of medicine in which different techniques are used to repair damaged organs and tissues. Stem cell therapy is one avenue of regenerative medicine. Stem cell therapy has enormous potential for good. The ethical issue is not whether to use stem cells or not, but where we get the stem cells from. The destruction of embryos for stem cells for research is ethically unacceptable.
