Advanced Placement
Scores on the tests discussed below and documented previous educational experience are the criteria used to determine a student's qualifications for certain advanced courses. If questions arise, students should consult the director of undergraduate studies in the appropriate department or the university registrar.
College Board Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams
Duke recognizes the Advanced Placement Program of the College Board so that new students are not required to repeat work previously mastered. Some of the courses listed are prerequisites for the major, some fulfill major requirements, and others may be used toward elective credits. Advanced Placement credit will not substitute for courses needed to fulfill the General Studies requirement in the six areas of knowledge, nor does it exempt any student from the University Writing Course (UWC). Please consult the undergraduate catablog for more information on individual courses. The record of a student presenting an AP score and desiring to continue in the same subject at Duke will be evaluated for credit and placement in an advanced course. AP Scores should be presented to the Office of the Registrar no later than the end of the sophomore year. Departmental policies regarding advanced credit and placement vary. Generally, credit will be given for the following scores in the following courses:

Who must take the Math Placement Test? All students, except as noted below, must take the Math Placement Test before taking their first math course at Western, including many students who have transferred credits for math courses taken elsewhere. There are two levels of the Math Placement Test, Intermediate and Advanced (see table below). Contact the Math Department (360.650.3785) if uncertain about the correct level for you to take.
  • Test is waived for students who scored three or higher on ETS' Advanced Placement Calculus Exam.
  • Test may be waived by Math Dept. advisor for students who have college credit for a calculus course equivalent to Math 124 (calculus).
  • Students with a score of at least 480 on the SAT (Math), 51 on the WPCT (Quantitative Composite), or 18 on the ACT (Math) may register for Math 102 without taking the MPT.
  • Test is not required for entrance into either Math 99 or (beginning Fall 2003) Math 106
  • (beginning Fall 2003) Students who earned a C or better in Intermediate Algebra from a Washington State community college or university may register for Math 381 without taking the MPT.

Martha Jean Barrett
Groveport Middle School, Groveport, Ohio Subject: Mathematics
Grade: 7 "This is by far the best project I have done in the classroom. I plan to make it a part of my yearly curriculum."
Purpose and Description of Project
Martha Jean Barrett is firmly convinced that even students who are bored or frustrated (or both) with mathematics can be motivated creation and construction of math games involving photographs they took at various community sites and then used these games to teach math skills to two classes of students with learning problems. Working in teams, the advanced students covered seven math categories-whole numbers, decimals, fractions, measurement, geometry, graphs, and percents. Each team selected a theme and pattern for its game, began construction, and, after instruction in photography, went out into the community to find photographic subjects that would lend themselves to consumer math problems. They then wrote and solved math problems related to the photos. When the games were completed, the advanced students demonstrated how the games were played for the developmental students, who had already studied the concepts in class. The developmental students became so enthusiastic as a result of the games that they went on to write and solve their own math problems on the basis of newspaper photos and items. Barrett found that while the Photo Math games were "designed to be used by slow learners, they were also found exciting by all of my other students." In fact, since most of the games require problems of varying difficulty to be solved before players can advance on the game board, she estimates that they would be useful from about fourth grade up. Students get caught up in the games, and the use of photographs makes the situations dealt with-such as figuring the tip on a meal check-more realistic than those usually described in textbook word problems. The students also found, notes the teacher, that math could be fun rather than tedious or frightening.

Undergraduate Programs
Mathematics Degrees
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Mathematics, minors in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and a joint program with the Economics Department leading to a B.A. in Mathematics/Economics. Freshman and sophomores who are considering a degree program in mathematics should see the departmental Director of Undergraduate Studies as early as possible. Students with superior records may enter the honors program or the four year BS/MS program . The Department also offers graduate programs leading to the M.S. in Mathematics/Computer Science and the Ph.D. in Mathematics. The deparment offers a broad range of theoretical and applied mathematics courses for majors. Upper level classes are small, usually less than 10 students, and there is opportunity for interested undergraduates to work directly with faculty members on research projects. Advanced students can also enroll in graduate classes.
Requirements for the degree in Mathematics
All requirement lists assume completion of the two-semester calculus sequence Math 111/112 or 112S or 112Z. Incoming freshmen with a 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB Advanced Placement Exam should skip 111 and begin in 112Z. Incoming freshmen with a 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC Advanced Placement Exam should begin with Math 211 or another 200 level course.

Academic Progress Checklist

Keys to Success for: 9th grade 10th Grade 11th grade 12th grade Colleges and universities prefer students with good academic records in a challenging and well-balanced program. While the number of recommended or required academic courses varies among colleges, a typical preparatory program for outstanding colleges such as Rutgers University includes courses in English, mathematics, science, foreign languages, and social studies.
Colleges expect students to have a good command of written and oral English. Most four-year colleges require students to pass four years of high school English. Such courses generally include vocabulary, grammar, composition, and literature.
