Lesson: RECOVERY HEART RATE Recovery Heart Rate is a measure of how quickly your heart returns to pre-stress levels. In this lesson we will focus on the recovery of the heart after the stress of exercise. In general, people with a higher level of fitness have a faster drop in their heart rate from the effort of exercise than people who are not fit. When fitness professionals are assessing recovery heart rate the recovery rate is, typically, measured for one to two minutes after the end of the exertion. Complete Recovery Heart Rate is the time between when you stop exercising and the time it takes for your heart rate to return to the pre-exercise level. Complete Recovery Heart Rate may require as long as an hour after the end of the exertion. In addition to the role played by becoming more fit we can use "Mindful recovery" to improve the rate at which the body recovers from the stress of exertion. Mindful recovery is the application of mental biofeedback to consciously regulate our recovery rate. It is an excellent skill to develop to deal with stressful situations. Mindful recovery involves visualization, deep (abdominal) breathing, comfortable body positioning and the use of other relaxation techniques to purposefully lower your heart rate as rapidly as possible. With practice students can develop their own coping strategies for managing their heart rate and their stress level in a variety of situations.

RIVER LAB Lesson Plans Lesson 1 Ecology of Oysters Lesson 2 Oyster growth and water quality Lesson 3 Susstainable Oyster Reefs Bottom of Page Rationale: The twenty-first century has granted us the opportunity to reverse the unsustainable practices of the past 300 years. Recent times have shown a dramatic improvement in water quality due in large part to increased waste water treatment, stronger legislation and decreased waterfront industries and farming. The newly expanded Hudson River Park provides the public with greater access to the water. With this access comes the opportunity to for citizens to act as stewards in restoring this precious resource. Pier 40, two blocks west of City-As-School High School, is located within the Hudson River Park which extends along the waterfront from the Battery to 59th Street.
River Lab is a program that brings students to the Hudson River Estuary for science education and recreation. The program includes a water quality research component, a boathouse internship and rowing. By exposing students to the Hudson River, New York City's largest open space park, we hope to increase stewardship and awareness. Throughout the course students will be monitoring the growth of the Eastern Oysters (Crassotrea virginica), which will serve as bioindicators that represent the "health" of the estuary system. The three lessons included in the action plan are taken from an eight week science course that was designed for high school juniors and seniors whom have previously taken biology. The lessons may be adapted for biology, environmental science, or social studies courses from grades 6-12.

    PFA MOUSETRAP
    Grade level: 1-2
    Length of activity: 20 min
    Equipment: PFA stations Directions:
Students form a circle and join hands to "set" a mousetrap. Choose two or three mice to run in and out of the circle or weave around the students that have their hands up to "set" the mousetrap. Teacher or a selected student covers eyes and says "snap" at any time to try and catch the mice while they are inside the mousetrap. Captured mice go to the "mouse hospital" (PFA equipment) to get treatment and then return to the game. Variation: Beanbags can be used for "cheese" in the middle of the mousetrap so mice can pick up a piece of cheese and leave the mousetrap and repeat until the trap is snapped. CAR REPAIR SHOP
Grade level: 1-2 Length of activity: 20 min Equipment: PFA stations Directions: Mark a boundary line on opposite ends of the playing area. Choose one or two taggers to be in the center. Students will be a type of a car. Choose 3-4 different kinds of cars (Porshe, Trans-Am, Jeep, Limo, etc.). taggers call out name of car so those students can race to the opposite end of the playing area. Cars that are tagged will go to the car repair shop (a PFA station) to be "repaired". After finishing a station they may return to the game. Change taggers often.

    Exercise
Exercise is not only fun, it is also good for your body, mind, and overall well-being. Kids who exercise on a regular basis often do better in school, sleep better, don't feel as tired, are less likely to get hurt while exercising, and are stronger than less active children. Exercise also relieves stress and helps promote good behavior. There are two types of exercise, aerobic and anaerobic . When you do an aerobic exercise, such as walking, running, swimming, inline skating, jumping rope, playing soccer, dancing, bicycling, or playing hockey, you increase your heart rate and the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the muscles. Aerobic exercise builds endurance and burns fat and calories. Doctors recommend that people do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise every day. When you do an anaerobic exercise, such as weight-lifting or push-ups, which involve short bursts of exertion, you build strength and muscle mass.
