Hawkeyed Aeronautical Engineer 1905-1980 The life of Elizabeth (“Elsie”) Muriel Gregory MacGill along with that of her mother Helen (1864-1947), mirrors much of the modern world’s social, economic, and political history. The elder MacGill, as the pioneering female undergraduate at Trinity College in Toronto, achieved Canadian and British Empire firsts with her degrees. Subsequently, she was an adventure some journalist who travelled alone to report on the development of nineteenth century western Canada and on the first parliamentary Diet in Japan. Later, as a crusader for women’s suffrage in the United States and as British Columbia’s first and Canada’s third woman jurist, Judge Helen Gregory MacGill effectively promoted legislation that improved the condition of women and children in Canada, the U.S., and abroad.
Canada’s first woman electrical engineer, Elsie MacGill received her Master’s Degree, in 1929, from the University of Michigan where her professors proclaimed that she was the only woman in the world to hold a graduate degree in aeronautical engineering. Undergraduate Students
Undergraduates at Caltech are welcome to take Ae 125 as part of their studies. Additionally, the LSMD employs a number of undergraduate students each summer through the SURF program to work on various projects. In summer 2000, ten students helped develop software tools for producing space mission designs. In addition, six students used these tools to devise a plan for space-based military communications, the Ansible system. The LSMD summer projects are frequently geared toward helping students gain a perspective of the steps involved in developing space missions. A lifelong interest in aircraft
It takes a little more than good study habits to get a career in Aeronautical Engineering off the ground. Many employers also look for evidence of work experience when recruiting graduates. For Michael Phelan, a graduate in Aeronautical Engineering, his Cooperative Education placement with Boeing in Seattle was instrumental in getting him his present position with British Aerospace Systems in Bristol, England. Michael chose Aeronautical Engineering because from an early age he had been interested in how things work. He was also aware that by choosing an engineering degree, he was opening up a wide range of career options. For example, an Aeronautical Engineer can work in most engineering companies, regardless of whether it is aviation orientated or not. Michael's Cooperative Education experience exposed him to commercial aviation, helping him to form a career plan and path that interested him. Working for Boeing provided Michael with an opportunity to experience at first hand the aircraft design and manufacturing environment. He was involved in acquiring cabin emergency equipment and also helped in the design of different types of insulation for Boeing 737 and 777 airplanes.
