AeREC is a multi-university consortium which will allow:
  • The participating faculty to form teams in their areas of expertise and respond to the research needs of the government agencies and the industry in aerospace related technologies;
  • The industry to partner with the universities to respond to federal research initiatives and in developing technologies that they cannot fund or develop as individual companies.
Furthermore, it will create linkages among universities, state and federal government agencies and the industry to provide for smooth and speedy progression through all technology development phases from basic and applied research to product development and product realization.

Controls
The program in Dynamic Systems and Control integrates, at a fundamental level, system design, modeling, and control disciplines to obtain improved performance of the dynamic response of an engineering system using feedback control. As such, the area of research of the Dynamic Systems and Control Group is a joint activity in the topics of systems integration, dynamic system modeling, feedback control design and the fundamentals of systems theory as applied to linear and nonlinear dynamic systems, mechatronics, structural control, aerospace and fluid mechanical systems. Currently, the Dynamic Systems and Control Group consists of 4 faculty members. Thomas Bewley is involved in the control and estimation of distributed systems, with a focus on problems in arising in fluid mechanics. Applications include weather prediction, drag reduction, shape optimization, mixing enhancement, and jet noise reduction. Raymond de Callafon focuses on experimental dynamic modeling using system identification techniques and the use of identified models in robust control design. His applications interests include the signal processing issues and the identification, control and monitoring problems in structural systems and mechatronic servo systems.

The Center for Aerospace Research and Education's (CARE) extensive research activities have perhaps been most widely recognized for significant contributions to the problems associated with the aging civilian and military, aircraft and rotorcraft fleets. The studies in the discipline of mechanics of solids, structures, and materials, have been major thrust areas and involve the analysis and synthesis of low-mass structures, keeping in mind their strength, stiffness, stability, toughness, damage tolerance, longevity, and optimal life-cycle costs. Self-adaptivity and smartness of structures is also of importance. A fundamental focus is placed on developing innovative computational methods for mechanical and aerospace engineering problems, for the near-real-time simulation of various physical phenomena of relevance in fluids, solids, structures, transport processes, and engineered materials, etc., at various length and time scales. Emphasis is placed on a diverse array of spatial discrtetization techniques, such as the weighted residual and weak solution methods, finite-difference methods, finite volume methods, finite element methods, boundary element methods, spectral methods, and the new class of meshless methods in general, and the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin ( MLPG) method in particular.

VIRGINIA TECH STUDENTS DOING AEROSPACE RESEARCH BLACKSBURG, April 2, 1999 Ten Virginia Tech graduate students have received Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) research fellowships and seven undergraduates have received VSGC research scholarships totaling $96,495 for 1999-2000. The VSGC also awarded three $1,000 teacher education scholarships for 1999-2000 to Virginia Tech students. Each year, the VSGC awards scholarships and fellowships that provide students a mentored research experience with university faculty members or NASA personnel. Research awards are made to students pursuing any field with aerospace relevance, such as science, math, engineering, technology, and other less traditional disciplines where an aerospace connection can be made. More than $225,000 is awarded annually with research award amounts ranging from $4,000 to $8,500. "This is real research that broadens understanding and discovery in a number of fields," says Charles Bostian, director of the Center for Wireless Telecommunication, who is one of Virginia Tech’s two representatives on the VSGC advisory council. COLLEGE STATION The robot platform is part of a system that someday will allow human operators to remain inside a spacecraft while making outside repairs via remote control. "This equipment will be the centerpiece of a new teleoperation robotics laboratory in Texas A&M's aerospace engineering department," said Dr. Don Ward, interim department head. Equipped with air thrusters and reaction wheels for motion control, the platform floats on a cushion of air to simulate zero gravity in space. Properly fitted with sensors and robotic arms, this type of robot can help with construction and external repairs on spacecraft and space stations under human supervision, Ward said. "This unique hardware represents a substantial contribution that will greatly enhance our space robotics research facilities," said Dr. John Junkins, holder of the George J. Eppright Chair and director of the Center for Mechanics and Control at Texas A&M. "When fully developed, this teleoperated system can enable a VR [virtual reality] type of interaction where a human operator remotely supervises the platform's movements." "The most difficult issue for this kind of robotics is achieving the proper mix of sensing, computer automated control and human supervision," Junkins added. "This system lets us use ground experiments to refine our sensors and control strategies."
