"The work of this institute will slice deep into the unknown," Gates said. "(TiiMs) is about developing technology solutions to address real vehicle systems in use," said Dr. Darrel V. Tenney, director of Aerospace Vehicle Systems Technology Office for the NASA Langley Research Center. TiiMS research will focus on blending microscopic NANO systems, bio materials and multifunctional intelligent systems, such as aircraft bodies that change shape and sense problems. Dr. Michael M. Reischman, special assistant for the Office of Aerospace Technology for NASA, said that some of this technology is only a decade away from application. The institute will not only be developing cutting edge technology, it will also be a great education tool.

Retro Aerospace Research
Retro Aerospace is active in research projects in a number of areas which fall into two major categories: Aerospace Engineering and Space Science.
Aerospace Engineering
Retro Aerospace's research interests and efforts in Aerospace Engineering reach across a wide variety of specific areas:
  • Launch Vehicles and Cheap Access to Space
We are actively developing low cost technologies and designing a series of simple low cost pressure fed orbital launch vehicles. As of 2002, we are still involved in component testing and engineering. The "Breeze" vehicle project is on hold until a series of rocket motor component test firings are completed.
  • Exploration of Mars
Retro is pursuing a number of research projects into engineering and science issues related to exploring and developing the planet Mars. These include:
    • Manned Exploration Mission Design and Analysis
    • Manned Rover Engineering Analysis
Including rover design concepts, systems engineering, motion dynamics, propulsive dynamics, vehicle stability, and other topics.

Automobile Safety Laboratory

The Automobile Safety Laboratory is dedicated to vehicle safety testing with a major emphasis on studying impact and injury biomechanics. The focal point of the 10,000 ft2 facility is a test sled mounted on a 66 foot track which allows simulation of high speed automobile crashes. In addition to the sled system, the ASL has a number of pneumatic and gravity driven impactors as well as state-of-the-art high speed data acquisition and digital video systems. Major research efforts at the laboratory include the study of advanced occupant restraint systems including air bag and seat belt systems. In particular, the ASL is establishing guidelines and criteria for the mitigation of airbag induced injuries.
Integral to our restraint research is our work to develop more biofidelic (i.e., lifelike) dummies and improved impact instrumentation. Other ASL areas of investigation include the measurements of impact loading on wheelchair confined drivers and passengers, analyses of the structural integrity and vehicle dynamics of automobiles, investigation of lower limb injuries caused by structural vehicle deformation, development of simulation models, and design of improved injury countermeasures.

by Wolfdietrich Hoeveler The German Aerospace Industry Association (BDLI) takes a positive stock of the aerospace research program that was initiated in 1994. BDLI questioned all of the 40 companies of the system and supplying industry which are participating in the program in a survey. Even though only 25 companies replied, these companies represent 95 percent of the volume of the DM600 million program. The industry is paying a share in the same amount. The participation in the research program has had positive effects on the employment situation of the companies. 104 new jobs, especially in the engine business, were generated. All of the new employees were contracted for research and development. Based on the survey results, BDLI assumes that several hundred work places can be secured due to the program. The questioned companies commented positively about the new possibilities for contacts in the research sector. Especially the supplying industry is very interested in intensifying its relations to universities and large scale research, mainly done by DLR. The interest in EU research initiatives has also been enforced by the national research program. Still, the immense administrative effort to get EU subsidies and the prospects of success are commented on critically.

Scratch III Aeronautical Research Funding
  • Do you know about funding available from Brussels that is available to assist small and large companies alike? If you did do you know how to access it?
Aerospace Research Funding Assistance for SME's
It is clearly recognised that small companies have specialist skills that would be very useful to co-operative research programmes but identifying the right company who is willing to participate is difficult. For the small companies it is difficult to find partners to form the collaborative project that will be acceptable for funding. There is also the paperwork to fill in which is time consuming. Well help is at hand. These concerns have been recognised by Brussels and that has lead to the project team known as SCRATCH III. This is a team of companies in relevant nine EU states that are working on behalf of Brussels to solve these issues. In the UK Europus Ltd is being funded to do the partners search work and assist in proposal writing. We will help find the right partners for you.
What does it cost?
