Afghanistan: Summary of Developments (December 10, 2001) World Vision:
World Vision's response to the needs in Afghanistan is barely eight weeks old but already the aid agency can point to the fact that thousands of Afghans are already benefiting or will soon benefit from World Vision's activities.
The idea of a convoy carrying warm clothes to protect children and adults from a freezing Afghan winter is just one of many World Vision initiatives to bring aid to the neediest populace in the world today.
These initiatives might be summarized as follows:
  • World Vision is in the process of establishing a $3.9 million emergency food aid program in western Afghanistan through a partnership with UNICEF and the World Food Program. The projects will target children under five and pregnant and lactating mothers in Ghowar, Badghis, Herat and Farah. The wider population will also receive aid in the more adversely affected provinces of Ghowar and Badghis. The blanket distribution may be extended to Herat and Farah if assessments show it is warranted. Total number of beneficiaries will exceed 500,000.
  • World Vision mobilised a cargo aircraft with 38 tons of relief goods, worth $125,000 donated by the German Government. Supplies included blankets, cooking utensils, water containers and plastic sheeting. The goods were transported into western Afghanistan for displaced in Herat and Farah. Estimated number of beneficiaries: 7,000.

Add sifted flour to beaten mixture, turn out on lightly floured board and knead for 10 minutes until smooth. (Add a little water if necessary). Roll out small sections of dough to paper thin circles or squares. For ears, pleat in one side of a circular piece - for bows; pleat in the center of a rectangular piece. (You can make these up to a foot in diameter - whatever your pan will accommodate.) Heat fat in a large shallow pan, and fry ears a few at a time until lightly brown, turning once. Remove from fat and drain. Pour dribbles of syrup over pastry and dust at once with generous amounts of powdered sugar, cardamom and pistachio

Updated August 1, 2002
When the group arrived in Kabul, they met with Sher Dil, their friend from FAR-Friends for Afghan Redevelopment Thanks to the Knightsbridge team, we are able to share photographs of one of the first Sun Ovens to arrive in Afghanistan. The Kightsbridge team has moved effectively through some of the most challenging regions of Afghanistan, including the northern region between the Uzbeck border and Kabul, and now the roads between Kabul and Bamiyan, the site of the tragic demolition of ancient Buddha statues by the Taliban. The Sun Oven has now been set up at a girls school for 2,900 students in Aibak, and another at a school on the outskirts of Kabul. The School is in need of many things besides desks and school supplies. It needs a roof, a well, latrines and chalkboards. Ed Artis and Walt Ratterman of Knightsbridge complete unloading and setup of the Sun Oven, donated by Rotary International, in Kabul.

Mid of September 2000 around 1.000 internally displaced families (IDP) arrived in Rustaq following the fierce fighting in Taloqan, northern Afghanistan. Terre des hommes provided immediately initial funding for these internally displaced people in order to meet their food requirements and to get the necessary time to launch a major emergency project. End of October the number of displaced families grew up to 1.500 families – just weeks ahead of the harsh winter months. An emergency team of Terre des hommes (Tdh) expatriates and local staff arrived beginning of November in Rustaq in order to plan and implement the project.

LETTER FROM AFGHANISTAN
Vol. 6. June. 2001 We inform about Afghanistan This newsletter is about Terre des hommes ’ emergency assistance to vulnerable displaced people in northern Afghanistan, which started September 2000 and successfully ended April 2001. With financial assistance of Chaine du Bonheur Swiss Development Cooperation and ECHO Terre des hommes has provided humanitarian aid to the suffering civilian population – focusing on food distribution, food for work programs and mass immunization campaigns against polio and measles.
The internally displaced people who fled the frontline areas last September had the fewest options and had nothing but the clothing they were wearing. Children, pregnant women, elderly people and the sick ones were particularly vulnerable, since they had long distances to walk, and limited food resources.
Displacement for children is also a more serious issue: Displaced children are especially affected by experiencing family separation, loss of community identity and particularly the loss of resources such as education and recreation, which could contribute to assist in coping with suddenly changed situations. They see their parents for the first time depending on handouts and charity, and they notice their parents’ frustration and shame, because they are unable to provide food for their children. In the longer term these experiences will certainly add to their trauma of the forced displacement.

SNI AFGHANISTAN SITUATION REPORT April 20, 2001 Executive Summary Drought and food shortages in the northeast region of Shar-e Bezurg in Takhar Province have resulted in dangerous levels of malnutrition among children and reported starvation. SNI has conducted two survey trips in the region, confirming that people have eaten much of their livestock and seeds and are now surviving on soups made of grass and herbs. Needy IDP families that SNI has been helping in Rustaq and Deshta-e-Qala have now received over 633 MT of WFP wheat and as part of OFDA’s emergency relief six thousand liters of cooking oil, 2,360 kitchen sets, and 31,000 kg of beans. Work continues with funding from OFDA on the housing component of the IDP/Host family relief effort. Already over 800 additions or improvements to houses have been completed for those families that chose to host an IDP family this winter. With funding from Global Partner, SNI continues to operate a bakery, distributing 2,760 nans per day for the most vulnerable IDPs in Faisabad. Famine and Drought in Northern Afghanistan Due to the recent drought in northern Afghanistan, the District of Shar-e-Buzurg is experiencing a severe food shortage. According to the first assessment and reports from the villages, there have already been 509 deaths among 6,092 families surveyed, 322 of which were children. In the second assessment of Pasakoh region, 196 deaths were reported from over 1,600 families. It is hard to confirm exactly that these deaths are due to starvation but what is confirmed is that many people are living on boiled grass, some seeds, and wild plants. Many more are weak and malnourished due to lack of food and have sold or eaten most of their meager food reserves, seeds, and livestock over the winter to stay alive. One man, who survived the devastating earthquake in 1998 and two decades of war, said that this past year was the toughest year he had ever lived through.

Cooking Equipment
Bamboo Steamer
Bamboo steamers are great for steaming food. The texture of the bamboo allows steam to circulate and evaporate so that less moisture will form on the inside of the lid. Steamers are normally placed over boiling water rather than to start steaming over cold water. Some Chinese like to boil water in a wok then stack bamboo steamers over the wok, with the food needing the most steaming being placed on the bottom, with ones needing less steaming on top. Asian grocery stores also sell metal steamers. Metal steamers comes with a saucepan that can hold water for steaming. I personaly prefer the bamboo style. So how doe steamers work? Arrange food to be steamed in a flat heat-proof dish or foil pie pan before placing it in the steamer. To be creative, instead of heat-proof dishes, you can place lettuce or bok choy leaves directly on the steamer. Then place food on top of the leaves. This works great with steaming dumplings ! Serve food with the steamer. It spices up your dinner table. Or, if you are making steamed bread, lightly grease the bamboo slats and then place the dough directly in the steamer. When finished, remember to take off the lid and let the steam disperse before reaching in for food.

te We have been distributing food and non-food emergency items to thousands of families in Sozma Qala, 200km drive south west of Mazar-i-Sharif, who were either displaced from their homes by the war or are suffering severe hardship because of the winter weather.
We also conducted a nutrition survey among children in Sozma Qala . A sample of 765 children aged 6 months to 5 years was checked, along with 758 mothers.
A shocking 14% of children, and 10% of mothers were found to be malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, so we decided to distribute food to all families with children, in addition to any food they had already received.

is a landlocked country, sharing its borders with Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikstan to the north, China to the northeast, Pakistan to the east and south and Iran to the west. The official languages are Pashtu and Dari Persian. Some English, French and German is also spoken. Outside Kabul, Afghanistan is still very much a tribal society. Religion and traditional customs have a strong influence within the family, and there are strict male and female roles in society. HISTORY
Afghanistan has a rich cultural heritage covering more than 5,000 years. Afghanistan lies across ancient trade and invasion routes from Central Asia into India. This position has been the greatest influence on its history because the invaders often settled there. It is also called the land of Khyber Pass.
