    http://www.amnesty.org/ailib/aireport/ar98/
It is 50 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). Developed in response to the atrocities of the Second World War, the udhr represented a collective determination never to return to those dark days. It was an important milestone in a discourse that stretches back through thousands of years of human history: what are the qualities that make us human and what rights, obligations and responsibilities do these create in our relationships with each other? The UDHR sets out the human rights which are fundamental to the dignity and development of every human being. These range from economic rights, such as the right to work and to an adequate standard of living, to political rights, such as freedom of opinion, expression and association. They include civil rights, such as equality before the law, and social or cultural rights, such as the right to education and to participate in the cultural life of the community. The UDHR proclaims that all these rights belong to all people.
In effect, the UDHR was a promise made by governments to work towards a world without cruelty and injustice; a world without hunger and ignorance. Fifty years after its proclamation, how far have governments lived up to that promise? To what extent have the rights set out in the UDHR become a reality throughout the world?

    Head of state:
    Abdelaziz Bouteflika
    Head of government: Ali Benflis
    Capital: Algiers
Population: 30.9 million Official language: Arabic Death penalty: retentionist Background The authorities stated in October that the security forces had ''neutralized'' 20,000 ''terrorists'' since 1992, without specifying how many had been killed and how many apprehended. For the first time, the authorities gave an official figure for the number of active members of armed groups, estimating it to be between 700 and 800, of whom 300 to 400 were said to be armed. In the wake of the attacks on 11 September in the USA, the Algerian government declared strong support for UN-led measures against ''terrorism'' and pushed for the expulsion to Algeria of nationals living abroad whom it said it suspected of having links with armed groups. The first detailed account by an ex-officer in the Algerian army about his experiences during the current conflict was published in France in February. In April, former Defence Minister General Khaled Nezzar cut short a visit to Paris to promote his memoirs after learning that three criminal suits for torture had been filed against him in France. These two events sparked renewed debate on the involvement of the various parties to the conflict in Algeria in the massive human rights abuses committed since 1992.

More specifically, as far as HR issues are concerned, in the field of multilateral diplomacy within the United Nations system, Greece has by tradition been active on a national level as well as together with other member states of the European Union. The “15”, Greece included, strive to develop and implement a Foreign Policy aimed at the promotion of HR, of the democratization process and of the rule of law in third countries within the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), one of the five axes that makes up the so-called triptych. Greece supports the universality, indivisibility and interdependence of civil and political rights on the one hand, and financial, social and cultural rights on the other.

This High Court Order interdicts/prevents him from infringing the trade marks Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Columbia Pictures, and/or aid or abet the infringement of these trade marks in the future. Saley, also the owner of an Internet computer shop, www.cybergames.co.za - was stopped by customs officials at Johannesburg International Airport on the 23rd January this year when he attempted to import 937 DVDs and 2294 PC games, including games from Microsoft and Electronic Arts. The goods, which were found to be counterfeit, carried a retail value of over R1 million. Fred Potgieter, MD of SAFACT - an organisation which enforces the intellectual property rights of various members, including the Motion Pictures Association's members, as well as their local distributors - namely Nu Metro and Ster Kinekor - said Saley had, a day before the final court hearing, applied for voluntary sequestration. "Both himself and his legal team failed to appear in court on the 7th of August" said Potgieter, "however, the matter was heard and a final order was granted against him." The court order granted in the Pretoria High Court on 7 August states that Saley is "interdicted and restrained" from dealing in counterfeit goods bearing the trademark of Microsoft and Electronic Arts - as well as any products bearing the trade marks Universal, Columbia Label, and/or Tri Star Pictures.
