The Area One Program is in its second year of transition from Cultures, Ideas, and Values (CIV) to Introduction to the Humanities (IHUM). The Area One Governance Board recommended that the following courses be certified. C-US certified the following new courses to fulfill the Area One GERs effective 1998-99: Fall Quarter Courses Desire and Its Discontents Freedom and Desire in Philosophy and Art The Good Life Themes and Variations Winter/Spring Course Sequences Living Through the Changes Performing the Past: Transformations, Revisions, and Subversions Reason, Passion, and Reality Ten Days that Shook the World A subcommittee reviewed courses newly proposed for certification by departments or programs for the Area Four General Education Requirement (World Cultures, American Cultures, and Gender Studies). An annual conference highlighting Brazilian studies at The University of Texas at Austin it explores contemporary cultural, social and political issues. It is sponsored by the Brazil Center, Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies and the College of Liberal Arts. All events are free and open to the public. More about Brazil Week... The Brazil Center Two Truman Scholarships Awarded To Plan II Students Heidi Boutros The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation has announced the winners of this year's scholarships, including Heidi Boutros and Corinna Kester, a junior and senior, respectively, at The University of Texas at Austin. Corinna Kester Boutros, a student in Plan II and Goverment, is a Dallas native. She wrote the first academic code of conduct at the university, organized UT Amnesty International's first lecture series and participated in volunteer projects to stop violence against women. She also co-authored a country discrimination report on South Africa for the U.N. World Conference Against Racism, interned with prisoners' rights organizations in Russia and traveled to India to rescue people sold into slavery.
