Graduate Minor in Studies in Africa and the African Diaspora
The graduate minor in Studies in Africa and the African Diaspora at the Ph.D. and master's levels provides a multidisciplinary, integrated foundation in the study of Africa and people of African descent. The program is based on a series of course courses concentrating in either the social and behavioral sciences or humanities and arts. Students are expected to develop programs in consultation with the directors of graduate studies in Studies in African and the African Diaspora and their home disciplines. We believe that the best approach to graduate training is based on a strong education in a student's chosen discipline, with the minor offering an opportunity to broaden and strengthen technical and interpretive skills in that discipline. Requirement for the Minor The doctoral minor required a minimum of 15 graduate-level semester credits, including the seminar Studies in Africa and the African Diaspora. Student are expected to take one additional seminar that focuses on the study of African and/or people of African descent. Remaining courses will be select from one of the following two broad areas: 1) humanities and the arts, or 2) behavioral and social sciences. All courses must be outside the student major fields of study. The master's minor requires a minimum of 9 graduate-level semester credits, including the seminar Studies in African and the African Diaspora. Remaining courses will be selected from one of the two broad areas listed above, and be outside the student's major field of study.

Literary Culture and U.S. Imperialism : From the Revolution to World War II
John Carlos Rowe
Oxford Univ. Press, 2000.
Paperback, 377 pages, notes, index. John Carlos Rowe examines the roles literary texts and their authors have played in supporting or opposing U.S. imperialism from the Revolutionary era to the middle of the 20th century. He uses a broad definition of imperialism that encompasses both domestic and foreign policies and argues that the subjugation of Native Americans, the enslavement of African Americans, territorial imperialism in the Philippines, and neocolonialism elsewhere in the world are linked by a common motive to enlarge and protect U.S. commerce. Racial typing and assumptions about "savage" and "civilized" societies served as an ideological justification for such policies. Although most of the essays have appeared before as contributions to anthologies or journals, they are presented here in substantially revised form and are fully integrated with the other chapters in the volume.
Publisher's Description
This study offers a sweeping reassessment of American imperialism, arguing that the United States developed imperial foreign policies well before the Spanish-American War, when public criticism of American imperialism was widely expressed. In its domestic policies toward native peoples, peoples of color, and women, and in its foreign policies with respect to territories and peoples in the path of westward expansion, the U.S. developed as early as the late eighteenth century methods of controlling commerce, lifestyles, and media for cultural expression that anticipated the economic and political "spheres of influence" characteristic of today's U.S. global power.
