http://www.colby.edu/afr.amer/
The African-American Studies Program at Colby is an interdisciplinary program of courses designed to expose students to the history and culture of African-Americans in the United States and to connect those experiences to the literatures, histories and cultures of Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Students may elect a minor in the program built around courses in anthropology, economics, government, history, literature, music, religion, and sociology. Students may also elect to pursue a combined African American and American Studies major.
In the late 1960s, a College committee was created to expand Colby's participation in this burgeoning field. This led to curriculum development, exchanges of visiting scholars, special lectures and other intercultural programs, and student exchanges with predominantly African-American institutions. Formerly called Black Studies, the program has maintained a special relationship with other College programs such as the American Studies Program, the Colby College Black History Month Celebration, the Office of Intercultural Affairs, and the Ralph J. Bunche Symposium, which sponsors events that explore the themes of diversity and human rights.
Students participating in African-American studies usually major in English, American studies, anthropology, sociology, psychology, government, or history. The history courses taken within the program may be applied to a field of concentration within the history major. A student with any major may take a variety of courses in African-American studies. Those who wish may be assigned an adviser in the program as well as one in their major department.

African-American Studies: A New Direction The inception of African-American studies departments in American colleges and universities originated during the turbulent political social era of the 1960s. Like young white advocates who protested against the Vietnam War, and hippies who longed for a gentler and more benign nation, Blacks, too, forged a change in American policy in race and social order. Thus, African-American studies programs emerged within the academy to serve the needs of academicians and students and fill the void of an ethnic curriculum. In these interesting times it was clear that America was a divided society, one Black, one White, one poor, and one rich. Thirty years later, however, things have changed.

The African American has been pivotal to the history, development and culture ofAmerica from The africanamerican Ethnic studies faculty component
http://ethnicstudies.ucr.edu/afas.html
Mission The African American has been pivotal to the history, development and culture of America from colonial times to the present. The African American experience is unique among the American ethnic groups. No other group entered the society so completely as involuntary immigrants, and no other group was subjected to such fully institutionalized degradation. The effects of slavery, segregation and oppression continue to influence the patterns of Black-White relationships. The major and courses here at UCR offer students an in-depth as well as a comparative study of the African American experience. Since there can be no real understanding of this specialty without attention to Black Africa, students also have an opportunity to select courses pertaining to Africa and Africans in the Diaspora (e.g., Caribbean, Latin and South America) offered within and outside the Department. Presently, African American students comprise nearly 5 percent of the student population at the University of California Riverside. The African-American Ethnic Studies faculty component consists of Professor Ralph Crowder, a historian and Professor Carolyn Murray, a psychologist. Faculty Carolyn Murray

I. Introduction to Program of Study for Departmental Majors
The major requires five quarter core courses (B10-1,2, B25, B36-1,2); five courses to establish a concentration in one of the three areas: social and behavioral studies, historical and comparative studies, and cultural studies of the black experience; a two-quarter senior sequence;and five related courses selected from other departments. Students may elect to emphasize special fields/issues with the area of concentration chosen.
II. Core Offerings
404-B10-1,2 Survey of African-American Literature A comparative exploration dealing comprehensively with major poems, slave narratives, autobiographies, plays, novels and essays by our greatest black and non-black American writers. Literature of both the "felt-knowledge" and the conscience of the race, in terms of the black odyssey, South, Middle Country and North. The course underscores the influence upon American society of these works and their pivotal position within the African-American literary tradition and the larger context of American letters.

About AASP
  • Message from the Chair
  • Who's Who in AASP
    Our Mission
The Afro-American Studies Program (AASP) at the University of Maryland fosters academic excellence in teaching and research on African-American life, history and culture. AASP's commitment to the development of intellectual growth for students and scholars accomplishes an equally important service for the African-American community as a whole: the quantitative analytical skills generic to social science research are put to use in the examination of the socio-economic problems confronting African-American communities in the United States.
Scholarly examination of African-American communities helps illuminate the parallels, contradictions and strengths evident in all communities. Thus, while the specific subject matter of the program is African-American communities, the essential value of the program extends to studies of other cultures and communities around the world.
    The Faculty
The Afro-American Studies faculty at UMCP is interdisciplinary and consists of a core faculty of anthropologists, sociologists, historians, and economists. The program also calls on faculty from other departments and colleges throughout the University.
Much of the research conducted by the faculty is on the cutting edge of scholarship on the Black community. Members of the faculty consult with a variety of agencies and appear at national and international conferences and programs. They are known moreover for their commitment to working closely with students in the program and for helping them develop the skills and capabilities for tackling the social and economic issues facing the black and other minority communities.
