Our department will introduce you to African and African-American history, culture and life in general. Although Africa and Afro-America are the major areas of study, due attention is paid to the Caribbean and Latin America. The interdisciplinary major, with its opportunity for fieldwork, encourages students to engage in independent study, if possible, in a Black community. In addition to academic interests, our program will prove useful for professionals whose careers take them to these geographic and cultural areas. Although we do not offer advanced degrees, courses are available to persons working toward an interdisciplinary M.A., Ph.D or other advanced degrees from varied programs.

    INTERNET RESOURCES
    African American culture
Some sites you should bookmark by Elna L. Saxton and Jo McClamroch
This piece began with a focus on education-related and other scholarly sites. Since African American Studies (or Black Studies or Afro-American Studies) has been an established academic discipline at dozens of institutions since the late 1960s, we were confident we would quickly be overrun with quality sites. It soon became apparent that there are many quality sites, and that to focus only on academic sites was too narrow for this article. Our resource list, therefore, expanded beyond academia into a total of five categories: Getting started, Educational sites/research centers, Organizations/associations, Afrocen-tric sites, and E-journals/news services. We do deliberately highlight more African American than Africana sites. At the same time, we do not suggest that we could capture the essence of or exhaust the number of potentially valuable sites for any culture's links, be it African American, Asian American, Native American, or any ethnic group. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, the Internet is a mother lode of information for cultural information. Librarians know that the quality of information on the Internet is problematic. We used several criteria: scope of coverage (depth and breadth), relevancy of links, logic of organization, currency, comparison to similar sites, and aesthetic appeal with limited commercial overtones. We evaluated at least ten and up to thirty sites in each of our categories before deciding on our final recommendations. We would emphasize that no cultural group should be seen in monolithic terms and we have attempted to include sites that represent views along the political and ideological spectra. We also tried to avoid an emphasis on any particular geographic region or historical period.

DIRECTOR Lucius Turner Outlaw, Jr. THE African American Studies program offers courses that treat the experiences of African-descended people both on the African continent and throughout the diaspora. Since a number of the courses required by the program are offered every other year, students must consult the program director soon after they decide to participate in the program to design a feasible course of study. Students may take courses on an elective basis or as part of an interdisciplinary major or minor. Courses taken at Fisk University may be counted as electives in the program of study. Program of Concentration in African American Studies Theinterdisciplinary major consists of 30 hours of core courses and 6 hours of electives. Requirements for the completion of the major include:
  • African American Studies 101, Introduction to African American Studies. (African American History) History 279-280.

    http://americanhistory.si.edu/paac/
The Program in African American Culture (PAAC) had its origins in a research group that was formed in 1972 to develop the African Diaspora program at the Smithsonian Institution Bicentennial Festival of American Folklife. Following the Festival, the program continued the research and presentation of African American Culture as part of the now-defunct Division of Performing Arts. PAAC became part of the National Museum of American History in 1982. The establishment of the program was the first time, apart from the Festival of American Folklife, that research into African American cultural history was given a permanent place at the Smithsonian. Bernice Johnson Reagon, PAAC's founder, served as director until 1989. Niani Kilkenny has been director since 1991. The purpose of PAAC is to systematically research, interpret, document and preserve the historical and cultural life and legacy of Americans of African descent through public programs, publications, and other media. The program's work requires the development of strong ties with community organizations, schools, and scholarly research centers for the purpose of organizing programs, broadly disseminating educational materials, and training emerging researchers and scholars in African American studies, cultural studies, and public history. PAAC addresses its mission through the presentation of programming and materials that serve to educate and inform the public and simultaneously honor and validate the history and culture of the presenters and tradition bearers.
