RENT PARTY JAZZ
by William Miller
illustrated by Charlotte Riley-Webb
An African American boy living in New Orleans in the 1930s raises
money to pay the rent with the help of a popular jazz musician
In New Orleans in the 1930s, young Sonny Comeaux has to work before school to help his mother make ends meet. When Mama loses her job, Sonny is worried. Rent day is coming soon, and if they miss paying by just one day, the landlord will put them out on the street and sell off their belongings.
2002 Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People, National Council for the Social Studies Best Children's Books of the Year for 2001, Bank Street College of Education
"The bold acrylic illustrations on two-page spreads are dramatic, lively, upbeat, and colorful, and have a flowing style that is almost musical. An afterword tells about the origin of rent parties and their link to the development of jazz. A universal rewarding story of people reaching out to others in need."
"Miller uses folksy dialogue to tell the story that celebrates both community and the uplifting power of music. Evocative artwork, done in broad, swirling strokes, fills pages with color and motion that echoes jazzy rhythms and the spirit of the story as it expressively portrays the times and the diverse characters... An inspiring, heartwarming story, illustrating how individuals and groups can make a difference when they 'put their minds and hearts to it'."

Born to former slaves in 1872 in Dayton, Ohio, Paul Laurence Dunbar became the first African-American to gain national eminence as a poet. Though he died at the age of 33, Dunbar penned a large body of dialect poems, standard English poems, essays, novels, and short stories. His work often addressed the difficulties encountered by members of his race and the efforts of African-Americans to achieve quality in America. Inspired by his mother Matilda, who had learned to read by listening to her slave master read poetry, Dunbar began writing poetry at the age of six. He was the only black child at Dayton Central High School but was a member of the debating society, editor of the school paper, and president of the school's literary society. After graduating he worked as an elevator operator (one of the few jobs he was able to get because of his race) until he established the Dayton Tattler, a black-oriented newsletter he published with the financial backing of the Wright brothers. He published his first book of poetry

University of Pennsylvania A Gallery of African American Alumni and Faculty The University of Pennsylvania is proud of these and other notable graduates. The accomplishments of the University's African American alumni are almost too numerous to list. This brief introduction to the careers and achievements represents only a small number of the remakable African American men and women who have passed through Penn's doors. We are indebted to former University Archivist Francis James Dallett who conducted much of the initial research on the University's early black alumni in preparation for the major 1980-1981 exhibit, "A Century of Black Presence at the University of Pennsylvania, 1879-1980." His work, supported by a grant for the Public Committee for the Humanities in Pennsylvania, provided the foundation for the University Archives' "Blacks at Penn Collection." The University Archives welcomes inquiries about these and other African American alumni, faculty, trustees, and honorary degree recipients.
