CAREER OPPORTUNITIES WITH A MAJOR IN AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES
Many jobs require a college educated individual. College graduates can use their education in a wide variety of occupations. Agencies and organizations in the public and private sectors need staff capable of working with individuals of all backgrounds; therefore, a major in African American Studies greatly enhances an applicant's ability to meet position qualifications. Many students enter the teaching field and/or pursue graduate degrees. All students are encouraged to consider a double major which combines African American Studies with another academic discipline, such as sociology or psychology, to ensure their knowledge, skills, and special insights are exceptionally marketable.
SKILLS RELATED TO AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES
  • Ability to read and write articulately and analytically
  • Proficient in interpersonal communication
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to interact effectively with people of different backgrounds in various situations
The following list is a representative sample of job titles for individuals with an African American Studies major. The list represents some, but certainly not all, careers which African American Studies majors may consider.
