African American Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach to the historical, social and political behavior, as well as the economic experience of Afro-Americans and people of African descent throughout the world. The program teaches the history of Afro-Americans and Africans with respect to similarities, distinctions and interaction between peoples of European and of African descent in America. Through a commitment to the functions of teaching, research, and community service, the program serves to prepare the student for career opportunities in the social and behavioral sciences as well as in the arts and humanities.

Overview
Established as an organized research unit in 1969, the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies has a primary commitment to undertake and sponsor research which aims to enhance our understanding of the history, lifestyles, material conditions, and socio-cultural systems of women and men of African descent in the Americas, and in the Diaspora. Two programs are currently key in this effort: the Bunche Center-Institute of American Cultures (IAC) Research Program, and the Cultural Studies in the African Diaspora Project (CSADP).
Goals and Objectives Vision Our vision for the Center's research program is thus to serve as a source of affirmation of African American identity, and to spur the creation of new scholarly explorations that probe beneath the surface of conventional typologies, representations and epistemologies and provide fresh insight into diversity and dynamics of African American culture and history, and heralds the many contributions and achievements of individuals and groups of African descent in the Americas. The specific goals of the Bunche Center research program include: a) expanding knowledge, conceptual frameworks and analytical tools in such a manner as to enhance understanding of the history, lifeways, material conditions, and socio-cultural systems of women and men of African descent in the Americas and in the Diaspora; b) investigate structural, institutional and legal constructs and processes that have a bearing on the psychological, social and economic well-being of peoples of African descent; and c) enrich understanding on the artistic and spiritual achievements and contributions of both folk traditions as well as renowned artistes of African descent.

"Although I've only been in the class for a few weeks, this class has made me look at the educational and social aspects of every day life and compare it to the material we cover in class. Lecture is very interactive. Professor Banks constantly poses questions for us to ponder and answer. Discussion can get so intense that sometimes I don't even take notes."

"The Future of African and African American Religious Studies"
With the early twentieth century writings of figures such as W. E. B. DuBois and Carter Woodson, a systematic concern with the nature and meaning of African American religious thought and experience was established as a legitimate mode of academic discourse. The work done by scholars in this field has given the religious experience and expression of African Americans much deserved standing within the Academy, with numerous new scholars emerging from graduate programs every year.
