Documents History Using Textural Materials Robyn McClendon's evolution as one of the most prolific fine artists and designers in the country has culminated from a distinguished art form that transforms humble materials into mixed-media paintings, books, handmade papers and fine stationary.
McClendon's design studio, ARTeological, pieces together fragments of history to create sentimental works that capture a sense of place, and diverse people carefully tucked away in the silent memory vaults of her clients. McClendon is a historian, or chronicler, of cultural heritage, who uses art as a means to preserve people's stories, and to highlight similarities in ancient culture.
Using a mixture of analytically researched elements, McClendon instinctively creates with environmental and symbolic materials that capture the background, achievements, idiosyncrasies, and emblematic characteristics of the collector. Incorporating straw, grasses, corn husks, dried flowers, and ethnic fabric from Africa, India, South America and various corners of the globe, McClendon develops a journey of discovery. Using the ancient art forms of painting with encaustic waxes and oils, along with papermaking techniques, McClendon incorporates her own handmade papers into paintings and bookbinding another lost art. "My work evokes this feeling of finding lost treasure, lost human emotion, deeply buried," she says.

Archeology Month Interview:
Mark Leone Exposing Our Past
No Indiana Jones: Digging up the past takes brains, not brawn
with Don Kehne H e's not Indiana Jones: He doesn't wear a leather jacket or dusty fedora; he doesn't carry a revolver; and he doesn't fist fight with Nazis in the Egyptian desert. No, archeologist Dr. Mark Leone is cut from a different cloth: less rugged, perhaps, but far more substantial. The 59-year-old University of Maryland professor and brain behind the university's archeology "digs" in historic Annapolis is the epitome of an academic. Tall, lanky, bookish and dignified by a refined civility that hints at his New England roots, he's every bit the astute, logical, exacting professor. Granted, his isn't exactly a household name. Nor would you likely find one of his books, which include The Roots of Modern Mormonism and the forthcoming Historical Archaeologies of Capitalism, on many coffee tables in Maryland. But in the field of archeology he's, well, a Steven Spielberg. His unprecedented 1996 discovery of spirit charms or 'divining bundles' of colonial slaves in historic Annapolis homes made international news. Nationally, both the New York Times and Washington Post interviewed him extensively about the excavations here.

African skull may be key link in human development
July 5, 1998
Web posted at: 10:25 a.m. EDT (1425 GMT) SOUTH AFRICA (CNN) A human skull believed to be between 100,000 to 200,000 years old is being hailed as an important discovery in the evolution of humankind. Scientists believe it may be a link between the transition from Homo erectus, sometimes described as the hand-axe culture, to the earliest modern humans. The skull was actually found 10 years ago by diamond miner Daan Marais 0as he walked along the shores of the Orange River in Namibia after it flooded in 1988. Marais took it home and kept it in his living room, not realizing its significance. During the last seven years, Marais has helped paleontologists search for fossils, but he never showed them his skull until April. French paleontologists Martin Pickford and Brigitte Senut say they knew the discovery was important as soon as they learned of the skull's thick eyebrow ridges and the low forehead.

Back to Stations Page Introduction Historical archeology is the study of people in the past by combining the techniques and insights of field archeology with the analytical techniques used to draw data from documents, photographs, oral history, and any other data source available. Because it is inherently multidisciplinary in perspective, historical archeology can be a very powerful enterprise. For its part, photographs of a house now gone contain an extraordinary amount of information, but that information is limited by the boundaries of the frame, the capabilities of the medium onto which the image was captured, and the precise instant the image was exposed. It is frustrating of course to have a portion of a house blocked by the proud family who is standing in front the structure, and for whom the photo was taken. It is also frustrating that frequently someone actually in the photograph might remember little about the event 75 years later. And we cannot know from the photograph exactly when a visible structure or element was created, nor if that structure or element continued in existence for even five minutes after the photograph was completed.

This new permanent exhibit tells the fascinating story of Africa in the voices of the people who shaped her history and who call Africa home today. The history pathway that winds through the heart of the exhibit begins with the origins of our species on the African continent, continues through the dramatic story of the Nile River Valley civilizations, and concludes with a brief portrait of one of the world's symbols of democracy, Nelson Mandela. The exhibit also explores the African diaspora and the influences of African cultures and their descendants in the New World (the Americas). The diversity of Africa's cultures finds expression in displays that include a modern Somali herder's home, a Ghanaian coffin in the shape of a 747 jumbo jet, and contemporary Malian textiles and fashions. Four West African vendors tell their stories in a recreated market, childrens' toys made of a variety of recycled materials touch the hearts of visitors of all ages, and the sounds of music and the words of statesmen, writers, and historians are everywhere. The exhibition ends with the Freedom Theater, which presents two seven-minute videos, one on the transatlantic slave trade and the other on the legacy of resistance to colonialism and racism.
    • In Fall 2000 the African Voices Focus Gallery features the wood carvings of contemporary Nigerian artist Lamidi Olonade Fakeye. Beginning in January 2001, "Visions and Voices of Black Brazilian Religion" pairs the photographs of Phyllis Galembo with commentary by a leading Afro-Brazilian priestess.
