In this new era of communication, information, both raw and cooked, is becoming more accessible, prevalent, and infinitely diverse. We would like to review some of the new electronic media and resources, especially as they have been applied in the field of African art studies, and offer a few thoughts about the opportunities and challenges they present. Physical distance itself is rendered almost irrelevant by the tremendous speed of the Internet. Through electronic mail and the World Wide Web, scholars virtually anywhere can sustain a level of global interaction with colleagues that would have been inconceivable just a few years ago. For example, a member of the H-AfrArts Listserv (an e-mail-based discussion forum) recently requested information about the mermaid-like spirit Mami Wata. Over the course of several days, she received a host of replies from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Members of the list were treated to current data about Mami Wata worship not only in West Africa but also in Brazil, Haiti, and the U.S.

The term "Rapoko" is believed to have originated among the Shona artists of Zimbabwe, where it derived from the stone's common resemblance to the roasted millet consumed by a majority of that country's indigenous inhabitants. All of the stone carving material can be found in colors varying through black; wide shades of brown; varying shades of green, lightening almost to white; and occasionally brilliant orange and golden shades. Masking refers to a broad spectrum of ceremonies and beliefs that have traditionally been practiced in Africa and other parts of the world. To wear a mask and its associated vestment was to conceal one's own identity in the guise of another. Whether this other was a spirit, ancestor, or another person-either revered or feared-the ceremony in which the masked performer participated marked a time of transition, when otherworldly powers were invoked to aid in human affairs. Masks played especially important roles in initiation and funerary rites, as markers of transition when the connections between this world and another were particularly strong. At such times humans sought to reaffirm the order of their society by reference to their beliefs and values exemplified by the masks. On this basis the mask carried the authority demanded by the occasion. In our society, for the most part, there are no restrictions on who may wear a mask or what they may masquerade as. But in other cultures this is not the case. In traditional Africa, in general, only men wore masks, although the mask itself could be male or female. If permitted to see the masks at all, even in public appearances, women were required to keep at a safe distance, since masks were considered dangerous to them. And only men-specialist carvers, blacksmiths, farmers, or ritual specialists-could make masks. Masks were worn in three different ways: as face masks, vertically covering the face; as helmets, encasing the entire head; and as crests, resting upon the head, which was commonly covered by a pliable, transparent material as part of the disguise. Examples of these three mask types are included here.

You are going to use the World Wide Web to hunt for information to solve a problem. You are a museum curator and you have found a large unlabeled crate of artifacts from Africa. You need to have information so you can set up an exhibit. This actitity is divided into five days so it can be incorporated into the school curriculum. DAY 1 The Task As you unpacked the crate of objects, you found that each one had a tag on it that told what it is called. You need to know what country it came from and how it is used and/or how it is made so you can make the descriptions for your new exhibit. After you have your information, you need to plan your exhibit. Your exhibit needs to include at least 12 items. More items would make a better exhibit. If you want to have a really special exhibit, find out if there are any art forms made by African Americans that borrowed ideas from the artifacts in the crate. The final task is to make a model of a traditional African village that would have produced one of the art objects you researched to add to the exhibit. Our greatest love are one-of-a-kind, finest-quality ethnographic pieces that we discover in our travels. We have been trading under the name The Niger Bend since 1982. Almost all of the items we sell, we have bought personally. We travel to West Africa frequently to buy and to visit our old trading friends. It is through our many friendships that we have learned to love the peoples and cultures of the area.
