My niche in the world of tribal arts is selling authentic, antique West African and tribal art at affordable prices. While I specialize in power and twin figures of the Ewe and Fon of Togo and Benin (Vodun, Bocio and “Venavi”) my selection includes a wide variety of wooden, iron and textile art objects from the Adangbe, Ashanti, Baule, Bono, Eket, Fanti, Ibibio, Ibo, Lobi, Moba, Mossi, Tchamba Yoruba and other West African ethnic groups, as well as occasional objects from other regions of the world. Additionally, I sell Africana and utilitarian pieces such as clothing, stools and chairs, hair dresser plaques, old paper currency and spoons.
Unlike some dealers of African art, I have lived in West Africa for over ten years. I make annual buying trips and have extensive supplier networks in the subregion. Please email me for price information and additional photos of objects on display and in stock. I can also search for objects you seek. Since I have low overhead and buy large but finely made quantities, I sell at reasonable "wholesale" prices.
Quantity discounts given, special deals for repeat buyers and selling arrangements sought.

The Art of the African Mask Exhibition Catalog Bayly Art Museum, University of Virginia February - August, 1994 The African masks in this exhibtion are dramatic portraits of spirit beings, departed ancestors, and invisible powers of social control. Each mask was made according to a traditional style, and each was worn by a trained performer. The African masks that hang on walls of Western art museums, detached from their full-body costumes, were originally part of whole performance ensembles, consisting of elaborately costumed dancers, vibrant music, and highly stylized dances. These complex ceremonial events expressed important social, religious, and moral values for the whole community. With careful attention to the masks' artistic and symbolic detail, it is possible to perceive these same values within the masks themselves. All the masks in this exhibition are from the collection of African art in the Bayly Art Museum, unless otherwise indicated. To view this exhibition, click on the items listed below.

Welcome to the - G. I. Jones - Photographic Archive of Southeastern Nigerian Art and Culture
This is an archive of digitized photographs depicting the arts and cultures of southeastern Nigeria. The collection includes examples from Ibibio, Igbo, Ijo and Ogoni speaking peoples. All of the photographs were taken in the 1930s by the late G.I. Jones , Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge. The majority of the images are from the Igbo speaking regions where Jones conducted most of his research. The materials included here represent only a sample of the complete Jones collection. The photographs are unique for the creative brilliance of the art represented, the quality of the photography itself, and the cultural and historical significance of photographic records from this time period in Nigeria. This site is intended to serve as a research resource. It was designed to make these important photographs available to people who have a personal or professional interest in the art, history and ethnography of Southeastern Nigeria. Anyone seeking additional information on the arts of this region may want to consult our select bibliography and list of related links by clicking HERE This archive was produced by John C. McCall

Featured Artist: LaShun Beal LaShun Beal was born January 28 1962. Beal, a Detroit native, now resides in the Houston area. As a young child, he always wanted to create things. He knew that he wanted to be an artist. He has taken only a few art classes. As a young man LaShun wanted to see the world, and the United States Marines gave him the opportunity to do that. He's traveled to Europe, South America, and the Far East. Through his travels, he experienced other cultures and his art reflects these life experiences. He worked for two years as an illustrator for a printing firm in his hometown of Detroit. This was his first job in the field that he truly loved, but his real ambition was to paint fine art images created by his vision of the world through his work. He realized that the life of a fine artist could be monetarily challenging at times, yet creating art is what he wanted to do. He has a fond appreciation of the black artists that have paved the way for this generation of artists to express themselves and become recognized.
