This is what we are here for, and what this entire web site is about. However, the focus here is on links to particular tools that may facilitate your research in this library and on links to other libraries that hold important African Studies collections. When we assist researchers, often we go through a similar relatively systematic process of first finding a relevant bibliography, identifying a set of related reference books, searching (and often narrowing the search interactively with) LUIS , the library's online catalog, and finally performing the narrowed search on one or more paper and/or electronic indexes. As they say, "the devil is in the details." Indexes to academic journals are listed on the Library Databases page, but some databases are available on the web without restriction, such as the Quarterly Index to Periodical Literature, Eastern and Southern Africa (which is compiled by the Library of Congress Office, Nairobi) and the Anthropological Index Online an "Index to Current Periodicals in the Museum of Mankind Library (incorporating the former Royal Anthropological Institute library)." Is the Web a substitute for the library?
    No.
A library is a collection of full text resources in many formats that have been selected for their quality and utility. Libraries are arranged to facilitate research and use databases to provide access to their collections. Libraries also purchase or license bibliographic or information databases for researchers to use.
    Is the Web a database?
    No.
A database is a compilation of information that is organized into fields and can be searched logically, with dependable results. Databases may be library catalogs, indexes, or bibliographies, or they may be collections of statistics, directories of addresses, or inventories of merchandise stock. The common element is organization and reliable searchability.
It's not a library and it's not a database what is the Web?
