The Hero With An African Face Critical Acclaim The Hero with an African Face is a breakthrough book on the mythic imagination of Africa. Clyde Ford picks up where Joseph Campbell left off and takes us into the wonder and mystery of the African traditions. A master storyteller, he skillfully evokes the mythic vision, weaving personal reflections on the seeker's journey with interpretations of enchanting stories from the many voices south of the Sahara.
Jonathan Young , Ph.D., founding curator
Joseph Campbell Archives and Library This fascinating exploration of African stories and myths informs and inspires us; and most importantly it tells us who we are as human beings all of us
Cornel West author of Race Matters and The War Against Parents The Hero with an African Face presents the compelling wisdom of Africa traditions, which is relevant to everyone living in the modern world. Through this book the deep well of sacred mythic knowledge left to us by these "first peoples" can assume its nature and rightful place in the pantheon of world mythologies and we are all the richer for it. Clyde Ford has given us an extraordinary gift.

Okay, just to set the record straight... when I decided to do a links page, my first thought was, well, there's like, Perseus, Bullfinch's, Gutenburg for originals... short list, right? And then I started looking. And looking. I filtered out most of the crap, and I still had a list longer than my arm, and about ten hours blocked-off to make this page. So yeah, it's about as well-organized as my sock drawer, but deal with it! We've got more important things to do for the moment, heh.

The Hero with an African Face: Mythic Wisdom of Traditional Africa Clyde W. Ford, Bantam, 227 pgs., $15.95 By Dorothy Ferebee “Whether we listen with aloof amusement to the dreamlike mumbo jumbo of some red-eyed witch doctor of the Congo, or read with cultivated rapture thin translations from the sonnets of the mystic Lao-tse…” These words from The Hero with a Thousand Faces by the late Joseph Campbell, greatly disappointed Clyde W. Ford, yet inspired him to embark on a journey in search of Africa’s heroes. "But if the hero has a thousand faces, many must be African, though the hero with an African face is seldom seen…I held fast to the idea that if mythological insights were indeed universal, as Campbell claimed, they would necessarily extend to African mythology even though he had dismissed African contributions as “mumbo jumbo.” So began Ford’s journey to explore African mythology. In the very beginning of his book, Ford explains his belief in the certain existence of the African hero.

5 pages. With the decline of agricultural price in the 1870’s and 1880’s that led to lower-class southern whites to join farmers throughout the country in populist political movements, political leaders sought to unite the racial lines in order to effect more votes from the black voters. This did not work and the populist revolt died away after 1896. This then refutes some of what society was attempting to resolve. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

The information provided for you on this class assignment has been organized in the same manner as your class syllabus that is by regions of the world. References are made to books in our circulating collection, reference collection and websites. General references such as the World Book or Encyclopedia Americana do not lend themselves as well to research on this topic. Likewise, there are very few journal articles available on the topic of mythological gods and goddesses so we have chosen not to include what little there may be available.
