If you want to succeed, ask three old people. Chinese Proverb Course Description: In an aging society demographic, economic, and social trends are continuously converging with profound social consequences. This course will examine these processes of aging as they affect individuals, families, cohorts, and societies. Students will learn that aging and the life course can only be understood from an interdisciplinary perspective. We will study social and historical forces as well as biological and psychological processes that influence the individual aging experience. As we explore the dynamic interactions between people and their environments, we will ask ourselves: In what ways are generational norms reflected in the aging experience? How are early life experiences and socialization processes (incl. issues of race, class and gender) relevant to how "successful" we age. What impact does social policy have on the lives of older Americans?

What is Sociology of Aging and
the Life Course? Sociology of Aging and the Life Course provides an analytical framework for understanding the interplay between human lives and changing social structures. Its mission is to examine the interdependence between (a) aging over the life course as a social process and (b) societies and groups as stratified by age, with succession of cohorts as the link connecting the two. This special field of age draws on sociology as a whole and contributes to it through reformulation of traditional emphases on process and change, on the multiple interdependent levels of the system, and on the multidimensionality of sociological concerns as they touch on related aspects of other disciplines. The field is concerned with both basic sociological research on age and its implications for public policy and professional practice. Basic research topics include age as a structural feature of changing societies and groups, as both people and roles are differentiated by age; the succession of cohorts that link aging processes with sociocultural changes; and aging over the life course as a social process.

The Health and Aging specialization within sociology investigates how social structures and processes affect health and life course development.
The objective of the Health and Aging program is to prepare students as scholars for the scientific analysis of critical health issues, especially in an aging society. Graduates may seek to conduct or apply research, to teach in universities or other settings, or to work in health or social service organization.
Graduate students may pursue Ph.D. and M.S. degrees with a specialization in either medical sociology or the sociology of aging in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The department also offers sociological areas of emphasis in religion; family, sex, and gender; politics and economy; and law and society.
The Health and Aging program combines coursework, research, and teaching experiences. Coursework emphasizes theoretical and methodological advances in the field, with consideration of both micro and macro sociological approaches. Students are encouraged to explore their areas of interest in courses offered outside the department.

My interests are in the areas of the history of the family and sociology of aging. I have a book forthcoming on the experience of childhood and young adulthood in early twentieth century Ontario, contrasting class and rural-urban differences. An ongoing project is a guide to Canadian research in the field of the sociology of education. I have also developed a student guide to Canadian research on aging, and have examined publishing trends in this rapidly expanding field. http://www.mcmaster.ca/socscidocs/synge.htm Last Modified: Sunday, September 19, 1999 12:06:04 PM
