AGORAPHOBIA
Agoraphobia typically results from the fear of having a panic attack in specific situations "from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event of having an unexpected or situationally predisposed Panic Attack or panic-like symptoms" (DSMV-IV). Literally, "fear of ope n spaces or of being in crowded, public places like markets" from the ancient Greek agora or market, agoraphobia is generally understood as fear manifested in the avoidance of a cluster of situations such as crowded places, heights, being alone, being in a crowd or standing in a line; being on a bridge; and traveling in a bus, train, or automobile. Agoraphobia can lead to extreme anxiety and avoidance, leading some victims to become "housebound," unable to leave a very small "safe zone." The early treatment of anxiety helps avoid the escalation of symptoms into agoraphobic behavior. Agoraphobia is responsive to both therapeutic and medical treatment.

http://www.encourageconnection.com/whatisagora.html
Many people who suffer from panic attacks go on to develop agoraphobia, a severely handicapping disorder that often prevents its victims from leaving their homes unless accompanied by a friend or relativea "safe" person. The first panic attack may follow some stressful event, such as a serious illness or the death of a loved one. (The agoraphobic often doesn't make this connection, though.) Fearing more attacks, the person develops a more-or-less continual state of anxiety, anticipating the next attack, avoiding situations where he would be helpless if a panic attack occurred. It is this avoidance behavior that distinguishes agoraphobia from panic disorder. Two different types of anxiety appear to afflict the person with agoraphobiapanic and the "anticipatory anxiety" engendered by expectations of future panic attacks.
If you have agoraphobia, chances are it developed something like this: One ordinary day, while tending to some chore, taking a walk, driving to workin other words, just going about your usual businessyou were suddenly struck by a wave of awful terror. Your heart started pounding, you trembled, you perspired profusely, and you had difficulty catching your breath. You became convinced that something terrible was happening to you, maybe you were going crazy, maybe you were having a heart attack, maybe you were about to die. You desperately sought safety, reassurance from your family, treatment at a clinic or emergency room. Your doctor could find nothing wrong with you, so you went about your business, until a panic attack struck again. As the attacks became more frequent, you spent more and more time thinking about them. You worried, watched for danger and waited with fear for the next one to hit.

Learn about disorders such as panic disorders, agoraphobia, social phobia and children and anxiety.
http://www.algy.com/anxiety/anxiety.html
Anxiety Disorders A nxiety is part of normal human experience. We all know what it's like to get tense when threatened by something - to have butterflies in the gut before speaking to a crowd, to get weak-kneed in front of the opposite sex, to freak out around spiders or snakes, etc... (substitute your own scenario). These anxieties are common and understandable. Indeed, they may be an inevitable part of our biology, hard-wired into our brain through the process of evolution, a vestige of the times when seeing a tiger in the wild told the ancient man to run, and run fast. For some people, though, these moments of anxiety aren't isolated and rare like they are for most people. Instead, anxiety is a constant and dominating force that severely disrupts the quality and enjoyment of their lives and goes far beyond mere occasional "nervousness." An estimated 30 million Americans (including many Famous people ) suffer from an illness of the nervous system that is medically recognized as an "anxiety disorder." This illness manifests itself in many distinct but related forms that all share extreme debilitating anxiety at their core. Further information on these types of anxiety disorders can be read below. Panic Disorder seemingly spontaneous anxiety attacks at a disruptive frequency.

There are many technical definitions with all kinds of slants .....for practical purposes I'll just give you a brief definition given me by a one-time counselor. Agoraphobia is, according to her, an anxiety condition wherein the one challenged with it suffers extreme anxiety or even terror when subjected to any situation which is outside of his or her "safety zone."
You will not find this to be a terribly technical page, but rather a practical one...one which explains in everyday terms what it is to be phobic, written by a person who has been phobic to one degree or another since childhood. It does limit me, but certainly doesn't STOP me!
To be sure, like most life situations, being phobic (shortened word for agoraphobic) has its up side(s) and its down side(s)..... I hope here to be able to give you a smattering of it all as told by those of us who know the challenge first-hand.

Diagnostic Criteria
  • The presence of Agoraphobia related to fear of developing panic-like symptoms (e.g., dizziness or diarrhea). Criteria for Agoraphobia:
  • Anxiety about being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event of having an unexpected or situationally predisposed Panic Attack or panic-like symptoms. Agoraphobic fears typically involve characteristic clusters of situations that include being outside the home alone; being in a crowd or standing in a line; being on a bridge; and traveling in a bus, train, or automobile. Note: Consider the diagnosis of Specific Phobia if the avoidance is limited to one or only a few specific situations, or Social Phobia if the avoidance is limited to social situations. The situations are avoided (e.g., travel is restricted) or else are endured with marked distress or with anxiety about having a Panic Attack or panic-like symptoms, or require the presence of a companion. The anxiety or phobic avoidance is not better accounted for by another mental disorder, such as Social Phobia (e.g., avoidance limited to social situations because of fear of embarrassment), Specific Phobia (e.g., avoidance limited to a single situation like elevators), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (e.g., avoidance of dirt in someone with an obsession about contamination), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (e.g., avoidance of stimuli associated with a severe stressor), or Separation Anxiety Disorder (e.g., avoidance of leaving home or relatives).

    What is agoraphobia?
Agoraphobia is the fear of being in a situation where one might experience anxiety or panic and where escape from the situation might be difficult or embarrassing. People with agoraphobia may feel anxious about such things as loss of bladder or bowel control or choking on food in the presence of others. They also might feel anxious about being home alone, leaving home, or being in a crowded place, such as on public transportation or in an elevator, where it might be difficult or embarrassing to find a way out. To avoid the anxiety associated with these situations they refrain from putting themselves into such situations. The severity of agoraphobia is quite variable. Some people with agoraphobia live essentially normal lives as they avoid potentially anxiety-provoking situations. However, in severe cases of agoraphobia, people are homebound. These people work very hard to avoid any and all situations that might cause them to become anxious.

According to her, agoraphobia is an anxiety condition wherein the one challenged with it suffers extreme anxiety, or even terror, when subjected to any situation which is outside of his or her "safety zone." The focus of this site is a practical one, one which explains in everyday terms what it's like to be phobic (shortened word for agoraphobic), written by a person who's been phobic for about 37 years now.
